Wayne, he's improving every day, but still has a way to go. It's frustrating for both of us, but we are doing what we can, and accepting what can't be changed. He's determined to be back to work by Jan 11, and I am praying that he makes that goal.

It was a hint, but it was also a genuine comment, because some state laws make a real difference, when someone dies, in how the assets are treated. For example, if you are in AR, and you own a house with your spouse, and you owe the IRS but they have not filed a lien, the house will automatically transfer to the spouse's sole ownership, subject only to obligations on file at the DOD.

THAT IS WONDERFUL. Congratulations. What's wrong with just calling it Miracle Day? One we should all celebrate much more often.

If he owned any property, they might file a lien, but most likely they will simply write it off unless he has significant assets. And the fact that they were letting him make payments leads me to think he does not. Since your profile does not indicate where you are, it's hard to make any significant suggestions.

New Years Day may be "next year's holiday', but that was not the way you put it, Bill. You said "One more holiday to go and then it's tax time." New Year's is before 'tax time', which officially starts Jan 11 this year. Not that my post was intended as anything but a joke, anyway. Happy holidays....

My advice to him would have been to write a regular paycheck, go to the bank with her and have her cash it, then pay him. That way she could never say that she was not paid her last paycheck. In some states, it is easy for a worker to file a claim that they were not paid, or that pay was withheld for a debt, and the state will make the employer pay them.

Actually, I think there are at least two more for most everybody, Christmas or Hanuka or Ramadan or whatever, and then New Years.
-
I think one reason for the late update is that the Organizer is one of the late forms, itself, which generally, we are not using until now or even later. I know I send the ones I do send out in Jan, so that they will not get lost in the Christmas mail glut, or 'put in a safe place for later', never to be found again.

Just a reminder to all, to send George an email asking for them, just click on his name, and 'send him a message' is one of the options you will see.

Well, you can call ATX Tech support, and they can give you your new ID #. Then you can get in. It is a pain, but the new security was added because more critical stuff is going to be online this year. For example, for those who do RALs, the checks are going to be authorized online, although you will still print them. So much sensitive stuff, like SSNs, is why the new security to get in. I don't like it, but I do understand it. One hint, make your password a word or phrase you can remember, plus a number, say Aardvark1. Then when you have to change it, you go to Aardvark2, then Aardvark3, etc. that way all you have to remember is what number you are up to.

I think that is going to be the direction the company is going. The sign in front of the one I went to was a TaxWise sign. Also, I just sent a message to the 'Suggestion box' on the My ATX' page, and got back an email that read "Thank you for using TaxWise e-mail. We strive to answer all e-mails within 24 hours. Be sure to check the Customer Support Site (support.taxwise.com) and the Knowledge Base where you can find the answers to the most common questions without a delay. We appreciate your business and will respond with an answer as soon as possible. TaxWise E-mail Support Team The information contained in this electronic message from CCH Small Firm Services, and any attachments, contains information that may be confidential and/or privileged. If you are not the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any disclosure, copying, distribution or use of this information is strictly prohibited. If you have received this communication in error, please notify CCH Small Firm Services immediately by e-mail or by telephone at 706-290-7200, and destroy this communication. Thank you." So it looks like they are going to be attempting to merge the ATX and TaxWise programs. I don't know how well that will work, or whether I'll like the resulting product, but at least we will have the familiar ATX product for this coming season. Now, if I can just remember how to get into the support page!

http://www.atxinc.com/kleinrock/cpe/index.asp This link took me to the full list of courses available. Could it be that you did not buy a package that included them?

Don't hang your head, it was just for fun, and you did well anyway. I've seen answers much further off than yours way.

Wrong. The correct answer is 7: The party consisted of 2 little girls and a boy, their father and mother, and their father's father and mother. I'm not sure why you added the son's wife? The mother of the children is a daughter in law to the grandparents.

Well, I did go to the seminar, and now I wish I'd saved the money. It was frankly disappointing. Extremely basic, and while the presenters were nice folks, the main one seemed only slightly familiar with the program herself. She did not even mention some of the more obvious shortcuts, such as opening new forms by using the 'bunny hop' instead of going to 'add forms', looking for the form and selecting it, then opening it. It might be worthwhile for a total newbie, but it sure was not worth it for anyone who had used the program for a while. I wish I'd saved my time, although I did win back the cost of the seminar in the casino on the way out! In fact, I made a small profit, but not enough to justify the time spent.

I agree, there is no Roth choice, because it's only taxable if they don't follow the rules and leave it in for at least 5 years, in which case it's taxable to the extent it's not a return of the contribution.

Call their help line, they really are helpful about answering that sort of quesiton.

A certain family party consisted of 1 grandfather, 1 grandmother, 2 fathers, 2 mothers, 4 children, 3 grandchildren, 1 brother, 2 sisters, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 1 father-in-law, 1 mother-in-law, and 1 daughter-in-law. A total of 23 people, you might think, but, no. What is the minimum number of people here?

Well, Deb, you don't have your state listed, so I don't know what your state's procedures are, but I can answer your last question. Yes, of course, one person can own all the stock in a corporation. Question is, are they going to sell their shares to him? In most states, if there is only one shareholder, he can hold all the offices. But check with the state about what is required when officers resign, and also what is required with a corp with only one shareholder.

You can file it now, using a short year option, if that is what you want to do. Just mark it final return.

You may not know this but many nonliving things have a gender... *Ziploc Bags are Male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them. *Copiers are Female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. It's an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed. *A Tire is Male, because it goes bald and it's often over-inflated. *A Hot Air Balloon is Male, because, to get it to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under it, and of course, there's the hot air part. *Sponges are Female, because they're soft, squeezable and retain water. *A Web Page is Female, because it's always getting hit on. *A Subway is Male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up. *An Hourglass is Female, because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom. *A Hammer is Male , because it hasn't changed much over the last 5,000 years, but it's handy to have around. *A Remote Control is Female. Had you fooled! You thought it'd be male , didn't you? But consider this - it gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying!

And yes, you can include the cost of the clearing in his basis.
