  1. No, you need to set that as a 'trusted' file. There is a KB document on that one, I'm sure.
  2. Well, given that he actually not only listened to someone who promised him a 200% return in one year, he gave the guy his money, he is obviously the sort who would believe that someone like Roni Deutch could get him off with pennies on the dollar. I just always wonder how people who are so dumb and so greedy got their hands on that much money in the first place? Inherited from a dotty old aunt who thought he was 'so sweet', perhaps? It is hard to even feel sorry for someone who clearly let their greed overcome any sense they might have ever had.
  3. Perhaps he can get himself committed to a home for the terminally stupid????? Seriously, this guy [your client] has committed theft from his corporation, or he has given himself a taxable dividend distribution from the corporation, and if the corporation has debts, he has a major problem there. He needs to talk to an attorney, right away, because his problem is not just taxes. While he is the victim of a theft, he also is going to owe taxes on the money he took out of the corporation, while the theft loss is gong to be personal. You need to read the IRS Pub on theft losses, but you need to make sure that the client goes and talks to an attorney, because this is going to involve more than just that. A corporation is a separate legal entity for a reason, and that means that even if you own all the stock, you can not just take money out of the corp for your own use, without legal and tax consequences. If the corp can now not pay it's debts and it's taxes, he may have committed fraud against the creditors of the corp.
  4. When you tell it to share a folder, the 'default' permission is just to allow other computers to read it. You need to click on the Permissions tab, and set it to allow All rather than just read.
  5. Actually, you do have a right to file amendments, up until the 15th of April. And the IRS has too much real work to do to waste time trying to sanction preparers who file amendments because the client asks them to.
  6. I don't know what the technical problem is, but I've found with many programs, over the years, that if you run into an install problem, it sometimes fixes itself if you do a reboot of the computer and then, with nothing running except the program you are installing, just try it again. Sometimes it is just some other program running in the background that causes a conflict. Maybe not even one actually 'running', because some programs, when you close them, leave a few processes still running in the background, just to make a restart faster. Rebooting closes all of those, so then the program can install correctly. It's worth a try. Good luck.
  7. Yeah, it was the only new thing I learned too. At least I did win enough on the way out to pay for the seminar. But not for the time wasted.
  8. A formula for inner peace...please read completely: I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we all could use more calm in our lives. By following the simple advice I heard on a Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace. On the show, Dr. Phil proclaimed: "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started." So I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's, a bottle of Kailua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of both Prozac and Valium prescriptions, the rest of the cheesecake, some saltines and a box of chocolates. You have no idea how freaking good I feel.
  9. And on the envelopes issue, if you point out that the purpose of storing them is to protect the CHURCH workers for accusations of wrongdoing, inflating someone's deductions or shorting them, etc, it usually gets a more favorable hearing than when you are just talking about doing it to help the congregation. After all, you are often talking about CASH, and the whole point is to protect the church employee or volunteer from being accused of siphoning off some cash from the donations. That's an argument that will be listened to most of the time.
  10. I'm not sure you have to, but it does cover your bases, since you are simply recognizing that IF you had had any carryovers, you would have reduced them! It's a no-cost CYA, that's all.
  11. Yes, that is Little Bit, the mighty hunter! Try taking a picture and then saving it in a smaller format. Or use Picasa or similar program to create a smaller version of the picture you already have. Picasa is free, and very easy to use.
  12. National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson released a report to Congress pointing out a variety of problems, including the impact of late-year Tax Code changes on taxpayers. She called on Congress to authorize "apology payments" to taxpayers in cases where the IRS harms taxpayers. Olson also wants better guidance about the taxation of canceled debts, saying that many taxpayers may be paying taxes they don't owe on canceled mortgage debt. Olson criticized user fees charged by the IRS, saying the agency collects about $180 million annually, mostly from fees charged to taxpayers who enter into installment agreements to pay their tax liabilities over time. Her report also noted that the IRS's private debt collection program is falling far short of revenue projections and that the costs of the program have far exceeded the revenue generated. Never mind. I found it. Multiple Home pages, what a neat idea!

Could you please explain how you go about setting up a second or more default tabs to open when you open IE? I use the multi-tab version, but do not know how to set it up to open multiple tabs.
  15. You would enter them on Line 21, down near the bottom where it says Canceled debts. It is the last preprinted item. Then in the blus line below, enter the same amount as a negative, and in the description area type in See Form 982. I would also, on the 982, put the same amount you put in Line 2 on Line 12.
  16. If you were insolvent both before and after, it will all be nontaxable. If the forgiveness made you solvent, then some might be taxable. But usually in a case like yours, you will be insolvent even after the 'adjustments', and still making some payments. If so, just use the 982, mark box 1(b ) and fill out the explanation section for Part II. There is a tab at the bottom to do this.
  17. But you got to meet me, so all was not wasted, right? :D
  18. I think I should point out, folks, that posts like this one are NOT useful here, simply because this is NOT an ATX site, and while some of them may read it now and then, it is not going to get your message to the company. Just to other users, and much as we would like to help, there is not a thing we can do about when a form is ready. So please, for your own benefit, send this sort of message to the ATX Suggestion Box rather than here. That way it will at least get read by an ATX employee, for sure.
  19. Just for what it may be worth......As many of you know, two of my three sons make their living as computer network engineers. They rank AVG higher than McAffee, which they rank lowest. Norton is somewhat better, but Trend Micro is top of the list with both of them. Since some of their work comes from clearing up problems caused by people who did not bother with security software, or who did not use it properly, they have experience with them all. Last time I asked, they were still rating Trend Micro best. They do say, if you have good hardware protection, as everyone who uses their computer in their business SHOULD HAVE, AVG is probably all you really need. But frankly, on a business computer, I do not think price should be an issue. Believe me, even ONE DAY of downtime would pay for it many times over.
  20. Dan, the whole point of having Capital Stock is that this is money that has to be retained in the business. The only way you can reduce it is when you close out the corporation. That amount of assets is what lenders can rely on being retained in the business.
  21. Even tho it STARTS on the 4797, it then goes to the Sch D, if it has been held over a year, Kea.
  22. Well, I bought a couple of HP 4050's several years ago, when they were the newest model, and although I really want a new printer, the darn things are so good that I just can not justify replacing them. Darn it, they just keep on working perfectly, fast enough and cheap enough on supplies, that I guess I am stuck with them for another year at least! You can find one on eBay for anywhere from $50 to $150, depending on what you want with it. There are extra paper trays for it as cheap as $10, and I'd definitely get one of those, unless you buy one with at least two paper trays. http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?h...8%26catref%3DC6 There is one there with memorgy upgrade, network card, and three paper trays, that I would buy if I were buying one today. Current bid is only $31 but I'm guessing it will go for $150 or about. Check it out. http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Laserjet-4050TN-405...1QQcmdZViewItem
  23. I'd be inclined to tell him not to make the final est payment, since at the worst, the underpayment should be less than the penalty exclusion amount. And there is no reason not to think that in fact, the final return may well have a refund, anyway, given that the Sch A amounts may well be high enough to wipe out all the taxes.
  24. Yes.
  25. Eric set this up last April, after the company killed the old board. If you appreciate it, please consider clicking on the red Donate button at the top of the page, as he is doing all the work, and paying for it, himself. Even a small contribution would be appreciated, I am sure.
