  1. Yes, it should be netted, IF all the other factors allow it. Remember, for one thing, that one reason that the §179 is reported separately is because the §179 qualifications are applied at the individual level. It could be that the client has other §179 claimed that makes that on the K-1 not usable this year. Also, if the K-1 is not marked for an active individual, the §179 will not flow to the SE. But I doubt if that is the issue. Still, some box may not be checked, that is usually the reason whenever some amount is not 'flowing' as it should. You might try clicking on the 'blank' line that should have the amount, to see if there is a worksheet behind it that needs to be checked.
  2. Let's be honest here. ALL software companies have faults, and tech support problems, from time to time. Even the very expensive ones, the mid range ones, and the cheap ones. And all have their good points, good employees, etc. It's sometimes a simple roll of the dice.
  3. Why not download all the forms on the CD, so that does not come up again?
  4. Thanks for that.
  5. Have you tried running the netsetup again on the workstation, after the update? Not that this would be a permanent solution, but if it helps until you get the problem diagnosed and fixed, it would be a step in the right direction.
  6. I vote with Tom on this one. While it is true that a person who dies during the year gets a full year exemption, that is not the same thing as being alive when the child was born. By the time the child was born, the father was deceased, so no dependant exemption for him. The mother gets the exemption.
  7. Sounds like a perfect place to use the override option.
  8. FMV at DOD.
  9. There's a guy at a bar staring at his drink. He sits and stares like this for half an hour. Suddenly, a big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy, and slugs it all down. The poor man starts crying. "Come on man, I was just joking," says the truck driver. "Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry." "No, it's not that," the man replies. "This day is the worst day of my life. First, I fall asleep and I get in late to work. My boss, outraged, fires me. When I leave the building to drive home, I find out my car is stolen! The police say that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I exit the cab, I leave my wallet and credit cards there and the cab driver just drives away." "I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar." "And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison."
  10. Yeah, that is because they are using TaxWise support people to answer ATX questions.
  11. As a dependant, and as his child, is how I would report him. That is what he is, as as long as he meets the test to be a dependant, it really does not matter how. And the 'relationship' box is for just that.
  12. I think you are all missing the point, if the issue is the way the return Mailing Slip is printing. There is now a place in the Preferences, Print, to select to 'center' [old layout] the mailing slips, or to print the return address on the left. If you select 'centered' the mailing slips will fit the old envelopes. You do not need to customize, just select it in preferences.
  13. Well, of course, the problem is that he has lost so much of his team, and, I suspect, much of his power to get things done. But it's the best we can do, I guess.
  14. I have a couple on a regular monthly deposit, same amount each month, even tho that means a few months are overpaid. That makes it simple for them to remember to do, and it balances out to be just about 'on the money' at year end. And they like it because they don't have to figure out the proper deposit each month, or call me to do that. Since their payroll tends to be higher at year end, the extra in the early months is used in the later ones.
  15. Only if that couch is in the garage.....
  16. One reason I mentioned the 'appraisal' is that it is possible, maybe, in some cases, that there would be a donation. If the owner could, for example, sell it to a salvage company for $5000, and they would demolish it and clean the site, and the cost of the owner clearing the site after the fire is $1000, then you could defend a donation of $6000. But if you do, you better have good documentation to support your numbers. You want an appraisal of the building, written offers from salvage companies, etc. Not just the client's opinion on what he could have gotten.
  17. When the couple agree, they can claim the kids any way that they want to. It's only when they disagree that "the rules" come into play.
  18. You definately need to get online with an upperlevel tech who can do an interactive session and find your problem and fix it. Send William an email, explain the situation, and ask him to get you the help you need.
  19. Yes and NO. It does mean they may have to pay just a bit faster, on the other hand, they only file ONE 943, rather than having to file four 941s. So while they may need to make a monthly DEPOSIT, that is, for most of my farmers, a much easier thing to have to do than to have to file quarterly reports.
  20. The practical considerations in these matters are: 1. Determine whether the governmental unit is listed in Publication 78: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=96136,00.html 2. Obtain an appraisal to serve as support for Form 8283. Your deduction is limited to 30% of AGI. 3. You need to carefully review the fact pattern surrounding the transaction. If the Taxpayer purchased the property with the intention of razing the property there is no deduction. My feeling is that Reg. 1.280B-1 generally prohibits any deduction upon demolition of a structure and that IRC 170(f)(3) prohibits the deduction of a partial interest in property. Since the owner still retains the land, he has at best made a deduction of only a partial interest. I have only found one case supporting this idea, Scharf v. Commissioner, 32 TCM (CCH) 1247 (1973).
  21. Me too.
  22. Police in Prichard, Ala., watched a car pull into the department's parking lot. When the driver opened the door to get out, the smell of marijuana was overpowering. "It was real potent," said Maj. Marvin Whitfield. Officers found the car was stolen. A bag of marijuana was plainly visible on the car's center console, and a loaded gun was found under the front seat. "I've been doing police work for about 20 years, and I never knew of anybody bringing a half-pound of marijuana and a gun to a police station in a stolen car," Whitfield said. Chavis Sanders, 22, had come to the station to see if police would return the money they had confiscated from him during two previous drug arrests.
  23. No limit, I am almost certain. If there were a limit, that would be in the KB.
  24. The only thing I can say, Deb, is that I suspect that it's not so much a deliberate attempt to mislead as simply that those TaxWise techs have no idea what the answer is....... Not that that is any consolation.
  25. I'd just add one suggestion to that excellent post, Jack. I recommend that you not install the program in C:/ProgramFiles/ATX___ but instead set up a folder in your C drive named ATX. Then, all your tax programs are installed in C:/ATX/Max___ This makes it faster to find them, because you do not have to go into Program Files folder. I find this to be much neater and a time saver.
