  1. Go to the rollover manager and pull down the rollover menu. I believe you can rollover all of the payers at once - without rolling over the return. I did this with companies and it worked just fine.
  2. Calm down. You will not find me defending the IRS very often, but your problem is not being caused by the IRS. The IRS is, no doubt, doing the best they can given the late, late shenanagins of the legislatures. If you have a beef, contact your congressmen and tell them to get their act together. And as to the forms being available, that has nothing to do with the IRS's systems being properly programmed and ready to receive those returns. By the way, make sure your client understands also that this is a problem that neither you nor the IRS created.
  3. And so far, I am the odd man out. I got my 1040 Express Answers first, a few weeks ago, and my USMTG more recently.
  4. Wow! I am sorry you had to go through that. I have had nothing but good experiences with ATX tech support. I think the moral to the story here is do not deal with the first line contact at all. Immediately ask to be sent to a tech specialist. After all of the aggravation, I hope you find the product to your liking. I have been using it for a couple of years and I think it is a good program. Much more involved than what they could have put in the tax software.
  5. That was actually announced some time ago. Has something to do with Emancipation Day - its a Federal holiday in DC. (Just one more way to waste our tax dollars, but I will refrain from editorializing.) My clients will understand that I will continue to observe the end of the filing season on April 15th. The office will be closed on the 16th, 17th, and 18th.
  6. Great advice. Met with a client this morning that uses QuickBooks. This client uses our portal to give us his backup. They upload the backup to the portal and we download it at this end. And he must have had one of those eureka moments because he sat back and said, "So if our computer crashes, you have a backup of our QuickBooks through the end of last month?" I just leaned back in my chair and smiled and said, "yep." We bail out at least one client every year that calls in an absolute panick. Portals are good.
  7. No problems here. I do a manual update of all forms when I arrive in the morning. Takes less than three minutes, as a rule.
  8. I just checked mine and if I click browse I can access anything on my computer and anything on my network. I am running on Windows Server 2003 with workstations running XP, the same setup as last year, so your issue may have to do with "7". I suggest you call support.
  9. You can change the backup location by clicking on "Backup/Restore Returns" from the "returns" drop down menu on the Returns Manager.
  10. On the Rollover Manager in the "rollover" drop down menu is a selection to "browse for last year's returns". Did you try that for the rollover issue?
  11. TerryD, It goes on page 2 of the Form 5405, part IV. And then flows through to line 59 of Form 1040.
  12. Instead of slamming CCH, why not ask your current supplier for their 2004? You might have better luck there.
  13. I know of no rule AGAINST efiling the 1099's. It is just something that we haven't done. I guess I should look into it. Heretofore, I have despised 1099's, (because I believe they are a waste of time because they only tell a very small portion of the story and the rules have never been fully enforced so "everybody" does not tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth), and I have always let my staff handle them. The accounting staff prepare the 1099's and hand them off to the secretary for processing and mailing. For the most part, I never see the 1099's on this side of the equation. So since you brought it up, let me ask. Can 1099's be batch efiled or does each client have to be efiled separately. With the rules taking effect in January, we will have nearly 400 clients that we will do 1099's for.
  14. Thanks, taxbilly. Yes, I am aware of that.
  15. For entry descriptions, there is a couple of boxes at the right hand side of the journal entry screen. One of those boxes has an "M". Click that box and it brings up another box where you can enter your description. Back to the journal entry screen - if you want that description to repeat you will need to set that up in preferences. Right click in the journal entry screen and a sub menu will appear. Click on "preferences" and make your selections.
  16. Here is what we did. (I have attached it, I think, as a pdf.) You will have to adapt it to your needs, market, and client base. Hope that helps!
  17. Beginning January 1st, 2011, landlords need to start tracking their 1099 info. These 1099's will be issued in January 2012. The other issue, with 1099's having to be issued to non-service vendors, the payer needs to start tracking the 1099 info on January 1st, 2012. These 1099's will be issued in January 2013. The landlord 1099 issue was part of a separate legislation from the vendor 1099 issue. The vendor 1099 issue came about as part of the health care legislation. If that legislation survives then the 1099 issue may survive. The 1099 issue may be pulled out of the law and repealed on its own. It may be modified. Shoot, we may even be speaking a different language by January 1st, 2012. But I believe the landlord 1099 issue is here to stay. We have mailed a letter to all of our landlord clients informing them of this change. They need to be made aware because their responsibilty for gathering the info begins in just 17 days. Understand the penalty for non-compliance. If the landlord does not get a W-9, the landlord is required to do backup withholding at the 28% rate. If the landlord fails to get a W-9 and fails to do backup withholding, then the landlord will have to pay the 28% on his own. Just to make the waters muddier, if the landlord pays with a credit card, he should not report these payments on a 1099 since the credit card company will be reporting that transaction to the IRS. Hope that helps!
  18. The IRS frowns heavily upon income and/or expense assigning.
  19. What's not to like? Very, very nice! Thanks for sharing.
  20. On the basis that member #1 must have thought he was personally liable for some reason - and that would most likely be a personal guarantee. You are, of course, correct in theory. I made some assumptions based on the info submitted. Now, that said, the LLC is just now being tested in the courts and is found wanting in some districts. I would not counsel my clients that they have 100% protection. Call me a dinosaur if you will, but I have not trusted LLC's from the start. Give me a corp anyday.
  21. Yep and yep. If this is a Chapter 7 bankruptcy (and it will say on the notice you received) and he is ultimately discharged (relieved of the obligation to pay the debt), you are forever estopped from attempting to collect the debt from him personally. In other words, his person guarantee of the debt will go away. You can still attempt to collect the debt from the LLC and the other member with no problem.
  22. Took me 36 years but I finally convinced my wife when I told her that when it is hanging against the wall, you scrape your knuckles on the wall. Over the top for me and mine.
  23. Add me to the choir. Just pulled mine out of the mailbox.
  24. I was at the poll when it opened at 7:00 this morning and was fourth in line. And it was about 27 degrees here in Northwest PA at that time. But I did my civic duty. Thanks for the reminder to everyone.
