  1. Everything was rocking along just fine this morning. Went to print the fourth return of the morning - nothing. My first thought was, what now? Upon further investigation, the printer had no paper.
  2. I just looked at the video (thanks Jerry) and it looks like the import function is not only still there, but much improved!
  3. For real estate, you use the mid-month convention - half month when placed in service and half month when taken out of service.
  4. This is from the ATX Blog: Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Updating to 12.6 in a Network Environment Scenario: You are on a network and you downloaded the 12.6 update via the Updates button inside the application. Symptom: You see the following behavior: The program crashes after the update appears to have applied When you go to Support>About you are still at version 12.5 Solution: Download and run the 12.6 update from the Solution Center by doing the following: Go to the Solution Center: Solution Center Select the Download Center link Login with your client ID, Username and password Select ATX 2012 Updates (left panel) Save the ATX 12.6 update to your server Run the update 12.6 update on your server Open and close the ATX 2012 application on your workstations so they utilize the 12.6 update. Reason: 12.5 contains a situation that is not allowing the update from within the program to apply. This is fixed in 12.6 on a "go forward" basis, but for 12.6 you will have to manually download and apply the update.
  5. Did you update from within the program or from the support site?
  6. Are you attempting to run the update through the program?
  7. Terry - is this the message you get? "The return cannot be opened due to an issue with the roller service. Please try restarting this year's program then re-open the return." If so, I have been getting that error on every return, before and after the update. There is a work around that has beeen working for me. Takes about 3 seconds but has to be done for each return. I have no problem if this NEVER gets fixed for me. There are bigger issues that need to be dealt with. BTW, I printed a 28 page return after the update and it took exactly one minute - printing it to pdf and then printing it to the printer. Marked improvement. Same return before the update would have taken 4 to 5 minutes. Back to work. I just opened a 1041. Woohoo!
  8. I downloaded it from the ATX download site to my server desk top and installed from there. Total elapsed time. 5 minutes. I am now going to attempt to open the program on my workstation. If you hear nothing further from me, it means I am getting some work done. Good Luck folks!
  9. Ken, the only time I have had a similar situation was early on. I had opened a return on the server, closed the return, closed the program, went to my workstation, opened the program, attempted to open the return and got the "returned locked" message. Since I knew the issue was either with the workstation or with the server, I re-booted them both - problem solved.
  10. I have only purchased one tax practice over the years and that was from an estate. The practice was five doors down from mine and the practitioner, who was a friendly acquaintance, died of a massive coronary late in the summer. I contacted the estate about three weeks after his passing to inquire what they planned to do with the practice because the clock was ticking and with each passing day the practice was probably losing value. Obviously the situation and the timing were not good. We determined the prior year billings in a convaluted manner and I was to pay 100% of that with 25% down and 25% in each of the next three years. The estate wrote me (well I wrote and the estate reps signed) a letter of referral to the client base. The situation being what it was, the estate and I agreed to adjust the purchase price based on the amount of clients retained for one year. The contract was written such that if the collections were higher than we anticipated, I would pay more, if lower, I would pay less. As it turned out, we were able to retain only 75% of the purported billings mostly due to the lateness of contacting the clients (by the time we were able to get the letter out (because of the estate reps dragging their feet (understandably)), it was into December). Anyway, always negotiate an upside limit and a downside limit. I think retention would have been better if the gentleman could have been around, but that wasn't going to happen. I wrote my own contract and did not consult an attorney. But I am comfortable with contract law and if you are not, you really do need an attorney.
  11. Really? Ben and Stephanie are some of the best entertainment on the net! Well, that might be a stretch - but always informative and well prepared. I TRY to tune in everyday but with all the other time consuming things on my plate, it has been difficult at best this year - a year that we SHOULD be tuning in all the more. But with the TV and the Blog and the email alerts, ATX really is trying to keep us in the loop.
  12. The program is already posted on the ATX TV site. Apologies and promises to stay the course but nothing much beyond that. Mentioned that half a million returns have already been filed through ATX. Mr Gramlich looked like I do when I have had just a little too much coffee - a bit jittery. Tells me they truly are working hard.
  13. Well, I have had mine open since about 10:00 this morning and so far so good - and I am working on my sixth return. One had three schedule C's, two were mult-state. But to your point about the memory leak - I understand ATX is posting an update Tuesday, I believe, that addresses some of the memory issues. (See the ATX blog for further info.)
  14. Actually, with each passing return, I am liking the software more and more. Yes it is a little sluggish, but that will come. As has been stated a number of times, this is not the ATX of old. It is a complete revamp, and I am liking it.
  15. My understanding is that "in cell" equations are no longer permitted under the guise that it screws up the e-file. Sounds reasonable. You will have to use the calculator to do your calculations and insert the result. F8 on your key board or click the calculator on the tool bar.
  16. Good plan Jack. I got my IPAD 20 months ago and I use it ALL the time. Where I go, it goes. So you are wise, stick to your laptop. But I do LOVE my IPAD. Can not imagine life without it now.
  17. What would we do without each other? Thanks Kea! The thought never occurred to me to email it to myself. I did that and now the guide has taken up residence in ibooks on my IPAD. I am excited!
  18. Can anyone tell me how I can get the pdf from my desktop to my IPAD? I need a little light reading for the wee hours. And it may as well be productive reading. Thanks!
  19. Wow - you guys are scaring me. Go to preferences, updates, and check your settings. Pacun, I believe those forms will only be added to the returns awaiting the form after you have downloaded the form and while you are opening that tax return (after the forms have been updated). Julie, 8879 has been available for quite some time. Just as an aside, early on I was not getting ANY state updates. Decided to check my preferences and, you guessed, pilot error. I was not requesting state updates. When I changed the preference and clicked updates, I thought my computer was going exploded with all of the forms that were being downloaded. Boy did I feel sheepish!
  20. My condolences as well. If you were at your peak stress level before you started the program, you might want to back off until after you have perused this board and the user guide (manual). As I posted in another thread, this is NOT the ATX software of years gone by, this is NEW software with a learning curve. Time spent getting up to speed will be time well spent. Again, my condolences - any family passing will rock your boat, an unexpected passing will take the wind right out of your sails. I have traveled the road you walk. Walk in peace, my friiend. May the God of all creation, keep you wrapped in His loving arms where you will find peace and comfort in these turbulent times.
  21. I remember having that schema error last year but for the life of me can not remember what it was about. I do remember I found my answer in the knowledge base. You might want to try that.
  22. Now that made me grin, John! I wonder how many hangups there would be because someone gets to the point in the manual that addresses his/her problem. Just sayin'!
  23. You are in very dangerous waters and should consult a professional directly with cash in hand. You are working way beyond your pay grade. And I am being nice.
  24. Bart - it is the "ATX 2012 User Guide" and you can access it in the manner Jack suggested or through the 2012 program as Ray suggested. Here is an interesting phenomenon, if i open the file via one method, the guide is 460 pages; through the other method the guide grows to 470 pages. Hhhmmm!!!
  25. No apology necessary. We are in total agreement. Post on!
