  1. The PA DOR is so far behind (supposedly due to a conversion to a different computer system) that they are sending out delinquent notices for unpaid taxes that have been paid and processed by the taxpayer's bank months ago. I offer that simply to enlighten you as to what you are dealing with. If you prepared and signed the return, call 717-787-1064. I have never had to supply PA a POA for returns I have prepared and signed. That number is to the PA DOR Business Taxes department. If you are prompted to leave a message, do so and they will return the call. If you did not prepare and sign the return in question, call them anyway and see how far you get. My bet, if your are trying to resolve an issue and are nice, they will talk to you. That is the number to the Harrisburg office. You could also try the local field office closest to where you are at. Sometimes they are easier to get ahold of and just as helpful. You will have to google to find that office. Hope that helps! Good luck!
  2. When were the bonds cashed? If late enough in 2014, but yet early enough, you could elect a fiscal year for the estate, distribute the income now (if the will and estate permit) and have the income in the second fiscal year of the return offset by the distribution now of the income to the beneficiary. Wait, I just re-read your posts and it seems the facts have changed. Your first post stated that Mom passed away in late 2013 and a subsequent post stated she passed in February 2013. So my suggestion will not work in your case. Or maybe it could if the 2013 1041 has not yet been filed. Maybe the bond redemption happened in the third fiscal year of the estate. Timing is everything in these situations and the devil is in the details.
  3. Gail probably has the best answer, but the timing of the events could impact the treatment. Rich is alluding to that. Is it possible to elect a fiscal year for the estate which could make some of this work?
  4. Methinks that since the monies were for the remodeling that was done in 2013 but not paid until 2014, I would add it to the depreciation schedule in 2014.
  5. I am confused in the facts. If the husband died in November, the POA died with him. The executor, representative, or estate administrator would be responsible for the filing of the income returns for the husband. The timing of the transfers to which you speak are critical. If the timing is not right, the transferred assets could be pulled back into the estate (and therefore into husband's assets before death) thereby most likely making him NOT insolvent. I do not know your state law, but that is something that you and/or the attorney of the estate should look into.
  6. After 15 hours of billed time yesterday, you are probably just about in the correct frame of mind to deal with this audit issue. I cut off at back to back 12 hour billing days last evening. Finished up the last 990 this morning. Did some odds and ends, have an appointment at 10 and then I am done. Had a client stop in yesterday to pick up payroll and I told him I was waist deep in non-profit work with the deadline on the 15th. And he says, "so this is like a ghost April 15th". Well put, my friend!
  7. The issue with the software "dropping the letters" may have something to do with auto save. I have noticed this happening also - more so when I am working from home through GoToMyPC.com to my computer at work. The built in lag time with that scenario does catch me off guard when the auto save kicks in and eliminates the entry I am working on. I have learned to just watch closer for that.
  8. I heard that. I am on my third 990 of the week. All of them are due (un-extended) tomorrow. The first was a 990-EZ with UBI. The second was a clean (after I got the financials cleaned up) full 990 with no UBI. And the third I spend all day on yesterday putting the numbers together and will spend a half day today doing the same before I can even think about the 990. This is a bit more complicated 990 and I enjoy doing it every year. Post your questions if you can and I will see if I can help. I am not taking calls or talking to anyone until I get this one done, but I will be checking in here and will help if I can help.
  9. Client shows up March 9th and asks "how late can I bring in my stuff and get my corporate return done by the deadline". Our response was "two weeks ago but we can file the extension now". He agrees to that and sets an appointment for March 22 to bring in his info and go over it with me because "some things have changed". March 22nd comes and goes and he is a no show. Having heard nothing more by April 15th, we opt to not file a personal extension (since the rule is that we need positive confirmation from the client in order to file an extension) and (since we assumed he went elsewhere due to the March 22nd no show). Fast forward to Cinco de Mayo - today. Wife calls to ask if we can expedite their corporate and personal returns if they bring the info in today because "the school" needs copies of their returns. Really?!?!?!? Come on man!!!! We told her that we are booked solid until the end of June - and that is the veryy best we can do. She said she will have to check with her husband. This is the same client that stopped into the office a couple years ago around the beginning of the second week of April and said he is dropping off his stuff so we can get the return done by the 15th. Well that didn't happen. But he did get my blood pressure up that year when he said he has had "the stuff" riding around in his car since early February. And he drives past my office two times per day during my open hours. Gggrrrrr!!!!! OK - I am done with that. I feel better. Thanks for listening!
  10. I am hurt. Oh well. I am a middle child - I guess I have to accept that I will be middle of everything else in life too.
  11. Yep - I have thrown the client at the mercy of the IRS in a very similar situation and they (the IRS) bought my argument. I provided the information and the timing of the events including when he was checked in to assisted living and the level of the assisted living and the relativity of the timing of all of the events. On another note, an 80ish gentleman with dementia decided to go for a walk down the middle of a very rural road in my neighborhood at 4:30 in the morning last Thursday dressed in dark clothes. He was struck and killed by the only car that would have traveled that road at that hour. As challenging as it is, we need to do a better job of protecting these people from themselves. The driver of the car will never be the same person.
  12. This is the one we have. Yes it is big - but boy does she work! The model is C3380.
  13. or is it not available with the new version. I was having every new topic and every response to topics I posted on coming to my email in box on a real time basis. I have all of the notifications set for email in this version, but I am not receiving any new topics. Is this a function that is no longer available? Sorry if you have already answered this and I missed it. BTW, you are doing a stellar job. Keep up the great work!
  14. Odd man out again. We have a Canon Image Runner (which is a stand alone machine) that functions as a scanner, printer, and copier. It is tied into the network so anyone can access it. It is the workhorse of the Canon family. We have had it for more years than I care to count - but we keep it maintained by the best Canon technician in a multi-county area and it just keeps on working. We do a ton of scanning, copying and printing on that machine. And from your topic title, I would simply mention that we have never achieved "paperless" status and we have been scanning everything we can since 2006. "Less paper", but not paper less.
  15. And we are back! Looking good Eric. Appreciate all that you do to keep this community from becoming dysfunctional. We can handle that all by ourselves. Great job!
  16. TTFN!
  17. In a sense I agree with you! On the other hand, I have made a lot of money over the years, bailing these folks out. I have lots of clients that used to think they could do it themselves. The thing that I hate most is that interim period when they do not want you to do the work (nor pay you for it) but think nothing about calling you up for free advice. Now that is what gets my blood pressure up. In fact, just thinking about it gets my blood pressure up. Look out dog, I am looking for something to kick!
  18. I don't seem to have that problem. I will let payroll clients go 30 days on what they owe me and then I shut them off (with warning). Usually the warning is all it takes. I only have this problem about once a year. Payroll is a nice profit center for us.
  19. We use three up blank check stock for paychecks. The software prints everything on that including the pertinent info on the stub which includes year to date numbers. One stub is left attached to the check and the other is for the client's files. The software prints the client's banking info, client's name and address, etc, on the check. It even prints a line for the signature. I just ordered in 4,000 sheets of blank check stock and that should last us the rest of the year.
  20. I believe if you already have access to the biz bank account to pay the employees, I believe the "responsible party" issue is already in play. We do a bunch of payroll (no direct deposit) on the client's checking account - but the client signs the checks. We do not take signatory authority over the account, nor do we impound funds for payroll taxes. We schedule the EFTPS and other electronic payroll tax payments from the client's bank account after notifying them of the amount and day of withdrawal and getting the client's explicit approval to schedule the payment. Occasionally a client has asked us to stamp his signature on the checks and our response has always been, "no thank you".
  21. I vote for the partying!
  22. Congratulations Elrod! Hope retirement is everything you want it to be! God speed!
  23. Oh contraire, I fear I know your life like looking in a mirror - kinda! Anyway, NO! You shut up, RitaB!
  24. I posted this on another list serv yesterday where there had been a hurtful exchange of words and both parties quickly realized they were equally over-reacting and publicly apologized to one another. It seems fitting to post it here as well. Absolutely nothing should be read into this than just what it says. You two reminded me of two of my dogs. They get into a brawl with each other for no apparent humanly observed reason and with no special warning. After they are done, they will stand there and lick each other's face. Not saying you should lick each other's face, but it was nice to see calmer minds prevail! This is a highly stressed business that causes us all to over-react from time to time. You all have a very blessed day!
  25. Shut up Rita - and go get a snickers bar!
