    Identity Theft

If its been accepted your good to go. If their socials had been used on a previously filed return, it would have been rejected on your end.
  3. I wouldn't think they would change it. Other software vendors let you decide what security you want to use. Proseries does and Drake. Its up to the preparer to meet IRS requirements.
  4. That stinks. Proseries allows you to bypass theirs.
  5. Or even a PIN with username and password. Pins can be set up in Windows and I imagine Macs too. Bypass the cell crap. Multi-factor authentication, also known as two-factor authentication, allows a tax professional or taxpayer to use another feature such as a security code sent to a mobile device, a pin number or a fingerprint in addition to the username and password. A thief may steal usernames and passwords but cannot access accounts without the additional multifactor feature.
  6. Why not use biometrics ? Fingerprint readers are cheap and very easy to use. IRS just requires two forms. One could be a user name and password and the second a fingerprint. Bypass these annoying authenticator apps. Copied from IRS. 7. Its up to the wife, not the husband. Too many ifs. I would recommend her file separate, stay away from his shenanigan's.

    Scanner

Been looking at the Epson RR-600W or the Brother ADS4700. Still using an old flatbed scanner here. I need to get out of the stone age.
  9. Not sure what program you are using. But Proseries on the 1099k form has a section for stating that the 1099k was incorrectly issued or was for items sold at a loss. That way the amount does not flow to the 1040. Then attach a note explaining.
  10. Didn't here. It would be nice to see if others did. Protection Plus calls at least twice a year. Just haven't had time to talk with them
  11. Lordy, I remember back in the stone age Medlin Accounting. Back in the 286 cpu days !! When it was a boost in cpu power to add a math coprocessor. Yes in the old days there where two cpu sockets on motherboards. One for cpu and one for mcp (math coprocessor). I still build all our pc's. But Medlin was one of a few accounting products available. And remember the first HP LaserJet printers !! You had to buy a font cartridge for them and they weighed a ton. Let alone the price of them. Anyway, Ive grown a thick skin to some remarks on forums. Just the nature Dennis. But you know that. Stick around, open a beer and laugh at it.
  12. We dont have too many partnerships or trusts. So thats not a huge financial impact. Mostly farmers (F or 4835) and schedule C and E clients. Will keep those. But after 45 years, I need to slow down.
  13. I agree, I just cant justify a charge for a 5 minute call. If its related to their current tax return, I wouldn't charge. But 90% of those few calls I get during off season are related to financial decisions that would effect the following year. Maybe I should just make a client file notation and add it to the following years total. But there are those who call many times before they bring stuff in and those can be time consuming. Guess I need to do a hybrid billing. Bill for questions before they drop off (ones that consume a lot of time).
  14. I should point out (important) that I dont charge an hourly rate. After 45 years its more a flat rate. Granted there are partnerships and trusts which are time based. But personal returns are flat rate (depending on forms used). Its worked well all these years. Question is, do you charge when clients call and ask tax related questions during off season. Meaning you have to research and do some calculations for them ? In my case, I may spend 15 minutes looking up something or calculating stuff. Or if its a simple straight forward answer (5 minute call), I never charge. If you do charge, is there a time spent that triggers a charge ? I may get 2 of those a week during off season. So its really not that much time. On the other hand, what about during tax season ? Do you charge for clients asking questions before their appointment or they drop off ? Those I get many. I can see not charging while you work on their taxes and calling them with questions. Guess I need to quit being nice and start billing all calls on an hourly rate.
  15. Had a few call to see when we could start filing. But when covid hit we stopped sit down appointments. Never looked back. Only lost 2 clients due to no sit down appointment. So much more efficient. Sit down appointment time with clients was probably 20% working on their taxes and 80% listening to how their year was. Calling them with questions is 100% more effective. Not to mention that since 2020 I have not been sick once during tax season !!! So many would come in sick that it seemed I was always snotting around and feeling puny. Actually would love to lose about 20% more. Been seriously thinking about posting a sign to that effect and attaching letters to finished returns. First will be getting rid of partnership and trusts. Just stick to personal. And get rid of the "file an extension" every years clients and the PITA ones. Then raise prices 20% !!!!
  16. Our government is nuts !!!
  17. During Covid we operated remotely with a drop box in our lobby with no sit down appointments. It was a bad time for us. We had two parents fighting cancer. We were preparing taxes and taking our parents to chemo treatments. Sadly we lost one parent. We had one (problematic) client call to schedule their appointment. Once we told him there were no sit down appointments, but he could drop off, he went berserk !! Threatened to ruin our business and post everywhere we were not following covid protocol. Well what he thought in his mind was protocol. After harassing us via phone non stop, I finally told the asshole that I was going to call the police if it didn't stop. And we added his number to our spam system. A week later he posted online we were not following "government protocol" and bad mouthed us in a review. The business review site was very respectful and allowed me to respond to the asshole's remarks. I explained we tried to work with him and that he wasn't having it. Kicker is this person is a damn nurse !!! We still do his family members and they do not associate with him due to his aggression. Sad, but there are people who only think of themselves even in dire times. Loved Paul Harvey !! Good Day
  18. Encyro has served us well for a few years now. Easy for clients to use, which is great. Do not have to deal with calls asking "How do I use it", And they offer "Digital Signing" of documents. Very low fee for signatures !!! Pennies per. https://www.encyro.com/ Link to their digital signature info (8879 KBA) https://www.encyro.com/esign
  19. Almost over people !!! Take a couple weeks off then finish the stragglers we filed extensions for. Its been a trying year that has dragged on forever !!! Been saying for years we need to cut back, but this year solidifies we need to. Tired and wore out as I imagine we all are. Hope everyone has a fantastic summer !!

    Proseries

    No. What's your issue's ?
  24. Hmm Never had a renter do a septic. I know with farm land that drainage tiling goes for 15 years and qualifies for bonus. But... Septic systems usually last way longer than 15 years. Our is 40 years old. Proseries has a nice drop down list with recommended depreciation rates. And they list Septic as 27.5
  25. Taught my daughters and son how to work on cars and use power tools to build things. And everyday common sense. Well they are still working on the common sense !!
