In WI, only retirement benefits based on qualified membership which began before January 1964 MAY BE SUBTRACTED. Any portion of benefits received that are based on membership in other nonqualifying retirement systems or based on employment which began after December 31, 1963, is taxable and may not be subtracted from Federal income. I only have one retired WI teacher who qualifies for the deduction. So, it would depend on when your teacher started teaching and when he/she retired. If the teacher is newly retired, 30 years would NOT qualify.

Am spending twelve to thirteen hours a day anchored to my computer chair and making very little headway. My in box is running over. We aren't eating decent meals (or hardly any meals). They just keep pouring in. Everyone seems to want their refund before "the IRS runs out of money!" The other side of the coin is all the early filers who are owing this year. I am going to take an early night.

Pleased to See ATX Backup Creates file with client name
mcb39 replied to Abby Normal's topic in General Chat
Ah, yes! Now I am satisfied and will not go there again. -
Actually, I am liking the fact that ATX is making us think more this year by not automatically adding EIC and other forms. I believe this is as it should be, though less convenient. It tests our weaknesses and strengths.

mcb39 replied to Yardley CPA's topic in General Chat
It is most likely a final distribution of his capital account; which is money he invested and has already been taxed. -

Take heart from the fact that you had the courage to fulfill the wishes of your wife. My heartfelt thoughts are with you. -
Could he have replaced another, older truck that was already depreciated out?

I found myself too.

I totally use export and can find all of my files on the jump drive as well as the total system backup. I don't have time to mess with anything else. You know that, Jack! -
Minnesota Stops Accepting Returns Filed With TurboTax, Cites Fraud Concerns
mcb39 replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
I know, Judy, but a transcript is nothing like having all the i's dotted and the t's crossed. I doubt that last year was all that complicated. This year, with the income splitting, two states, moving expenses, four jobs, etc will be the much more difficult one. One of his new co-workers sent him here. I have only met him once and he doesn't have all of his info from VA yet. It is the principal of the thing. As Jack said, TT is good for our businesses. -
Minnesota Stops Accepting Returns Filed With TurboTax, Cites Fraud Concerns
mcb39 replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
Yes, it IS free; with the purchase of the 2014 program. Or, you can go deeper and purchase it for $39. I told him not to bother. If it was simple enough for him to do on TT, I can reconstruct it, if I have to. This is the client who moved to WI from VA. -
Yours is older.........mine is a 5 or 6.

Minnesota Stops Accepting Returns Filed With TurboTax, Cites Fraud Concerns
mcb39 replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
In regard to Turbo Tax. I had a new client yesterday who did his taxes on TT last year. He didn't print a copy. Since he is a new client and I always like to see the prior year return, he went online on my computer to access his 2013 return; which he had been told would always be available online. It is available all right; but in order to access it you have to purchase the program for the current year. If anyone has ever questioned my vendetta against anything Intuit; you can believe that this only made it worse. Unbelievable! -
I was able to download a driver for a very old HP 1200 to work with Win 7 Pro. Just saying!!!!!

If I understand you correctly, you have already adjusted the basis on depreciation for the land. (added to the basis). You would not adjust it again on the sale as the land was part of the sale.

I would love a day with the snow falling; no drop-ins; no phone calls. February is nearly booked solid; not counting the mail-ins. Then people call and can't understand why they can't get in "today or tomorrow". All of these appts leave me little time to work and the sound of the phone is starting to make my skin crawl. Last night I had a call at 7:30 PM. I knew who was calling so I said, "The office closed at 5". After all the "I'm sorries", I took her information as long as I had her on the line. Turns out she wanted to let me know that she was getting married this summer. Has been a widow for a while. And, would I be able to do her fiancé's taxes too? What a life.

Had one of these a few years ago wherein a gal had to repay >$10,000. She repaid it all in one year. It just happened that was the year they spoke about this subject at tax classes. I remember how excited I was because I really didn't know how to handle that situation at the time. She had already paid tax on that income so it only stood to reason that when she paid it back she should get a credit.

Absolutely no resemblance to Elrod's second picture. Wonder why???

Thanks Hahn and Taxman.........those are good heads ups. I don't know when he moved, but he is working in WI so assume he worked in VA and would have to file for a refund if nothing else. Will see. He was recommended by another client who works with him so I don't know much YET! Thanks again.
