  1. No hugging went on. When I handed her the folder, I said "Here is a check for your Mother ($75 full refund) and here is a bill for you. She grabbed it, turned around and left. Never got time to introduce her to the back yard.
  2. It might be interesting as I did the work last year for final return of deceased father. Since that was not her return, I don't have to give her any of that information. Same situation last year with wrong codes on 1099's. Poor little rich girl who inherited all of daddy's retirement, pensions, life ins, etc; definitely needs an attitude adjustment. I wouldn't take her back under any circumstances. Jack is correct. I have nothing to say to them.
  3. I wouldn't believe a thing that Wells Fargo says without positive verification.
  4. I LOVE this!!!!!
  5. I like your plan. I don't like carrying around a bag of frustration. I have her folder prepared; the new bill prepared, the check written to the Mom for the entire retainer, and all of her information forms sorted. Her mess is in the outbox. I may not be here when she picks it up; but I feel a whole lot better; Thanks to all of you. Now, I am off to day four of the in-house audit I have been enduring. This time it will be at her office.
  6. I am furious; but would prefer not to be. I have decided to work up a bill starting with the retainer; then itemizing everything that I have thus far done on this return to save her mega dollars. The final balance will be return of the entire $75 retainer. Then I will add balanced owed for services rendered. They can pay it or not; but maybe it will shift the anger from me to them.
  7. It just struck me in these waning days or little sleep and much work that one of the things that makes me really angry are employees who are too cheap to print their W2s on perforated paper. Second; client called last night. She originally was going to change to another preparer but could not find anyone who would take her. Brought her 18 W2 and 1099 forms to me (She inherited her father's estate in 2015) After looking through the forms, I found at least two that were coded incorrectly; to her disadvantage. Had three separate phone conversations with her financial manager. Convinced him that the coding was wrong. Distributions are coded as normal instead of death; which will result in a hefty early withdrawal penalty for her. Now he told her that she really should take her return to a CPA. She finally found one who will take her and called and asked if she could pick up her paperwork. Of course, I told her that she could, but also told her that I am not exactly a fly-by-night preparer and that if I had not found the incorrect codes, she would be paying a lot more tax. The corrected 1099's have not been forthcoming, though they were promised in three to five business days. Now: her Mom gave me a $75 retainer to prepare this return. They want it back. How much of the retainer am I allowed to keep for the consulting, etc that I have already done? This one really pushed my anger button. I am not sorry to be getting rid of a longtime client because they have been getting a courtesy discount for many years. I hope that venting here will help relieve my furor. I wouldn't take her back now even if she offered me triple my normal fee; and the Mom can go right along with her if she so wishes.
  8. The nice thing about an inherited house is that if she sold it for less than value on DOD; plus her other expenses to keep it up; she can actually take a Capital loss on the sale. (Only on inherited houses; basis is value on DOD plus cost of fixing up and selling)
  9. Leave the Honey off.........just the Cashews!!!!! We have a good foot of snow and it is still coming down.
  10. Lion's desk looks better messy than mine does when it is cleaned off.
  11. Actually it is not that difficult. You are pretty much right. Basis is value at date of death of the father. I don't see any tax repercussions until he goes to sell the property. Then his basis will be whatever it was at DOD. I am assuming that your client is the one who bought the other two out. THEY have a tax situation at this time. The purchaser does not until he sells.
  12. The trick is getting someone to put a value on the timber. Almost always, client comes in after the fact with a 1099T which usually equals no basis.
  13. No luck here. I have had an in-house audit going on for three scattered full days. Total disruption of ordinary business. This past Tues, she was here again. Literally takes over audit; moves chairs around; puts her papers and stuff wherever she wants. She is polite, but intimidating and we don't have time or room for this. Next meeting will be at Federal building. However, she assigns "look fors" to me and my assistant. She is doing the audit, can't she look for things herself. This has put a terrible crimp in my ongoing flow and has left me in the weeds as far as production goes. Besides that, we both have terrible upper respitory something going on and are coughing our heads off. If it weren't for several really sweet clients, I would be ready to throw in the towel.
  14. It has always been my understanding that the LT is responsible for and gets the deductions for al RE taxes upkeep, etc until the date of death.
  15. This has been the most plodding tax season ever. I actually have decent help who is catching on fast. I still have to go over everything, but I feel lost when she leaves. We just seem to keep spinning our wheels. They just keep coming in faster that they are going out. Oh, and how many clients have dropped their land lines? A LOT!!! And, how many clients call just because their spouse was just wondering how we were doing with their taxes. Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!
  16. We also had our first cat for 21 years. We swore the same thing and then proceeded to have three more after her. My husband was really adamant this last time; but he finally gave in and we love our Annie so much. I will never be without a kitty again. There are so many out there that need good and loving homes. Annie was the first cat that we ever adopted. Took a while, but she loves us too.
  17. The picture is beautiful beyond words. My cat, Annie, is also a calico.
  18. I can't tell you how much stress relief I get from my cat. She thinks she owns the office and probably does. BHoffman you have my most heartfelt sympathy.
  19. That is what I would be asking Judy. What if they have a premium tax credit? These multitude of forms are making me crazy.
  20. Same here. Students and Active Military are pro bono. That is if students are dependents of a regular client.
  21. They say this all the time and then expect you to magically get their return finished like yesterday. Got three new clients yesterday who were SO nice! Cash up front; fairly easy returns and Victory for me over Turbo Tax; which they used last year. Kind of makes your day when you get people like this who are so grateful that you are willing to welcome them as new clients.

    Sticker Shock

I toss it in the waste basket right in front of them. Nobody says a word! My husband then incinerates it.
  23. I have many clients who mail in their stuff. Some are in other states, but many are local. Am expecting two today from Az because that is where they go to winter and they called me on Sat to let me know to watch for the mailman.
  24. Of course it is "simple"! They ALL are!!!!!
  25. Isn't it amazing that the same Lingo is a National Art? Thank you HRB and TurboTax commercials! And, Liberty will NOT do it for free. I do prepare returns for ACTIVE military pro bono.
