  1. I have a second year client who called on the 15th of April and told me to file an extension. He said he would bring in the paperwork; which he did. I told him that he would probably owe and needed to get this filed asap. His wife had cashed in three small retirement plans; no taxes withheld. They owe in excess of 1K. We have called several (documented) times and left messages. No replies, No call backs. Where does my responsibility end? I cannot efile the return as the 8879 is not signed. I left a message last night that I would not be calling him again. Suggestions?
  2. I still agree with OP. There should never be a loss allowed here for anyone since it was gifted property. Yes, there most certainly could and probably should be a gain.
  3. Nowhere does It say that anyone is even living in the house. Also, since it is not inherited property, how does anyone ever get to take a loss on personal property?
  4. Don't be so sure. I purchased my HP 2035 several years ago when it first came out and got it at a bargain price. Last year I started looking for a replacement of same model for backup just because I have a supply of toner cartridges for this machine; and also really like it. I had to pay as much for a new one today as I did back then. In any case, have insurance sitting on the shelf in my storage room. When the busy season hits is no time to be shopping for a printer.
  5. I still have (and am using) every HP that I have ever owned. Oldest one is a 1200 LaserJet.
  6. I never heard of it either.
  7. Older brother makes too much money to qualify as a dependent of someone other than himself.
  8. My rep called yesterday. I bit the bullet as I don't have time to fool around. We have to concentrate on making changes to compensate for the lost time in 2015-16 due to illness.
  9. Jack, I did say "limited". Also, this is 2016 and they did issue me a POA to represent this client in the audit of 2013 and 2014. I also got one just last week for a client who was being adjusted for 2012. That was the "divorce from hell" year.
  10. I have to tell you about the agent who has been conducting our in-house audit. (finished, finally). Last week she told me that after 2015, I could no longer get a POA to represent my clients before the IRS. She said that she had just seen an e-mail come in about it. I told her that unless something had just recently been passed, she might be incorrect about it. I then explained to her in depth about the ins and outs of the RTFP and the AFSP. I told her that because I had passed the RTRP; I had to have at least 15 hours of continuing education under my belt each year in order to receive my AFSP certificate; which gives me limited POA powers. On the other hand, a preparer with a PTIN could take a test each year and get the 15 hours of CE and would also qualify for an AFSP. She went back and discussed the conversation with her boss. He said that they were having a seminar on the subject yesterday morning and that since she was so knowledgeable about it, she could conduct the seminar. Which she did and was gracious enough to call and thank me for educating her. She has "only" been an IRS agent for six years. I am always ready to concede that I might be wrong, but in this case I was not.
  11. I also agree with Jack. I have never had issues with this type of e-file. Remember, 2016 will be the filing of his final return. Can you contact the daughter and make sure the account stays open until the tax refund is received?

    No issues here.
  13. It could be a payable on death account which now belongs to the daughter.
  14. I got the spiel yesterday, but they called me. The big push was for Portal Safe; which I do not want or need. In fact, with the price of everything going up, I am seriously reflecting on where I can cut corners in the coming year. It's a pretty sad day when you have to count the cost of going to tax classes as your "vacation" for the year. We aren't even finished with 2015 and suddenly we are hit with renew, renew, renew!!!!!
  15. I have that exact same floor in my office; installed diagonally. No Broccoli though!
  16. No known issues here. Prepared two complete returns using a variety of forms.
  17. I have always been used to entering the OS calculations manually, so no great upset. In fact, this is the first year that I had difficulties with a return with eight states. Maybe that update wasn't as polished as everyone thought.
  18. OS = Other States. I think I am finished with that for this year.
  19. I always request property tax forms and usually they are forthcoming. They split the FMV between the house and land. Otherwise, they can sometimes be obtained through the county website.
  20. Are you saying that my Wisconsin OS form; which has always been part of the WI program, is no longer going to be available?
  21. I got a "Possibly unsafe site" notice when I went there. I shut all of mine off by clicking on the "show hidden icons" in the taskbar. Then go to "Customize" and shut off all icons and notifications for Windows 10"

    done!

21 Extensions here. Only one identity theft this year; same client as last year with a pin. Day off today, work tomorrow, then disappearing for a few.
  23. I have to stop myself when I know that I am either rushing or being careless. Filed a string of extensions tomorrow, but what is driving me crazy right now are the naggers who keep calling to see "how their return is looking". They interrupt and waste my time. This is the most frustrating and intense tax season that I can remember and I have decent help this year.
  24. I ended up paper filing my Nonresident NY return. Thanks for all the help but never did get it figured out. It is just for a $5 refund anyway.
  25. April 11 for me as well. Unbelievable, but I know I would have been long gone without this board.
