  1. That is indeed the "secret"....um simple answer.
  2. I love the coffee flavored ones and keep a supply of sugar free Nips on hand during tax season. They are "rich and creamy hard candy" or "dulce duro rico Y cremoso". I get mine at Walgreens or sometimes the Supermarket. However, I think that Pacun had they correct answer.
  3. I agree with Joan on everything except Bart, cuz I don't know him either. All is going well for me this year; also in a community property state.
  4. When I tried to log in last night, I got the notice to change my password. I proceeded very cautiously, expecting the worst. However, it went smoothly; password got changed and I got logged in....
  5. The local IRS walk-in service center says that it MUST be paper filed and that you absolutely cannot put in $1 to make it be accepted as an e-file. She said that caused some sort of glitch.
  6. No, Rob, unfortunately you cannot to my knowledge create anything other than the cumbersome Organizer that they have left us with. I know that several ATX users do create their own organizers through Excel, Word, Works or some such word processor. Of course, I know of no way that the prior year numbers would carry forward. I have found myself apologizing to nearly everyone who came in with the current Organizer that I had sent out. Hardly anyone had put any numbers on it. The MINI was so wonderful for my middle-of-the-line clientele.
  7. Thank you for that article, which is printer friendly. I have several clients with multiple rental properties. Just recently a 23 year old young man who put himself through College by working parttime and buying two rental properties on land contracts, approached me. He said they told him in Business classes that multiple rentals should always be protected by LLC status. He has a degree in Business Management and one in Accounting.; just graduated in Dec. Quite a remarkable client.! Hence, I have been closely watching all of the recent discussions re Rental Properties and LLC as well as OIH.
  8. I was thinking along those same lines at first, but it won't work. The abandoned spouse has to be maintaining a home for a dependent son or daughter. Reg 1.7703-1((3) paragraph 1027. She will have to file MFS unless she shows me paperwork for a legal separation or divorce.
  9. All of you verified what I was pretty sure was correct. Some of you had some very interesting suggestions. I have until the 13th to think about where I am going to send her. I am really thinking that it might not even make any difference if she files MFS or Single. She already told me she is living with her boyfriend and he deducts all of the rent (in WI, we have a rent credit). I have a feeling she doesn't make much and would certainly not be able to itemize. I am really intrigued with Chrisbry's suggestion.
  10. New Client called yesterday. She "says" she has been separated for several years and has filed divorce papers but cannot find X to serve papers. She wants to file Single rather than MFS. From what I have been able to find, there has to be a legal separation or divorce. Does anyone have any input? She has no children so HOH is out. I haven't met this client yet and am not sure that I want to, but she is mad at HRB because they wouldn't let her file Single last year. :scratch_head:

    Deeded Home

If it is an outright deeded gift and not a Life Estate, the basis is the whatever the basis was for the person who deeded it away before he died. Depending on how long he had it and what improvements and/or expenses you can prove to add to the basis; it could be quite a Capital Gain....
  12. Thanks, that explains it.
  13. I downloaded 3.39 late last night through the "Update" feature in the Return Manager. There is no reason you should not do this. In prior years, I always had to update through the website because my dialup would not process the downloads from the Return Manager. However, this year the Update feature is working extremely well and I have only used the website to download certain forms I need right away or forms from other states than mine.
  14. But...this is the end of Feb and I have had several clients this past week who are just now getting 1099-Rs and 1099-Bs in the mail. What gives? Did the stock exchanges have some special dispensation this year?
  15. I don't understand how any program could possibly calculate the add back on stock dividends. They are never the same. We do them manually every year and getting the basis information and accumulated dividends can be an awesome task if the client had the stock for any length of time. I do, however, agree that it may be one of the most overlooked reasons for a client paying too much tax on the sale of stock. BUT, that is one of the reasons that they pay us to prepare their returns...
  16. Jainen.....I was pleased to see you support my conclusion. You are correct that it is tax code. It may not always be fair but we have to follow the rules. And, of course, she will hardly ever sign....
  17. A couple of years ago I took one of these to mediation. The IRS concluded that my client (non-custodial parent) did NOT get the exemption for the child without a signed release of exemption from custodial parent. We had furnished copies of divorce decree and stipulations of dependency and the IRS concluded that county or local law does not stand up against IRS rules which clearly state that the custodial parent gets the exemption no matter what. Just my 2 cents worth of experience. This year I have the custodial MOM who paid more than half of support and college tuition. Father has agreed to amend his return to remove the exemption which he incorrectly took and we will paper file MOM....
  18. I have one of these on my desk. My client (custodial Mom) claimed the child and the education credits. Got rejected because Dad had already claimed the child. He said it was his year. However, he only paid child support until June 7 when child graduated from High School. Education credits were lost because his preparer told him that only the child could claim them. We know that the credits follow dependency. Besides Mom paid most of them. I am now going to amend Dad's return and paper file Mom's or else $1,600 worth of education credits will be lost. At least they were able to agree on this; although I think Mom is going to remburse Dad for his payback due to loss of dependency. How difficult they make our jobs sometimes.
  19. Hey MN2V....am very happy to report that I received an ACK today for the MN non resident return that has been troubling me for about a week. Thanks for all the help and advice that I have been able to pick up from you and other MN posters.
  20. At 2:50 PM Central I was able to transmit 4 Fed/WI piggyback e-files and received all of my ACKS from yesterday.; including the amazingly awesome one for MN . I am a happy camper...
  21. This is what I posted on 2/9/2008...some of you may think this a joke, but there are many good things to say about the program..... This may be ill-timed and unnecessary, but with 9 ATX icons on my desktop, going back to 1999; I have to say to all the complainers that my program has never run smoother or more correctly than this year. Every day I find little tweaks that make things easier. The client letter is much more user friendly; the downloads are fast and flawless; even with my slow dialup and forms are opening automatically that you used to have to go after (ie 8880 for instance). After the first time, I have no trouble getting into My ATX, which doesn't mean that I like or condone the new login, but some things you just have to deal with. Did you know that you can still click on the "refund" box in the upper right hand corner to bring up the Tax Summary sheet for new clients. It is automatically rolling over for the the old clients. I cannot address the support issue because I have never had to call support more than once in a single year. I had my call early on this year in regard to login and was assisted quickly and politely. Other than that, my "support" has always been this Community board and the KB in that order. Kudos to ERC for bringing us all back together and keeping us here. We cannot thank you enough. If this is ATX's last year, it is a good one. If they go down, I probably will too as I cannot afford more expensive software with my one person in home office. This would, indeed, be unfortunate for my growing client base. I just want to add to KC's request that the bickering stop, the slurs stop and some of the borderline language should maybe stop also. Let's try to get along, let's try to help each other and let's hope for better days to come; while at the same time appreciating what we have NOW>...... -------------------- ;)

    MyATX

Try doing a search for "My ATX". This subject has been covered at length on this board more than once.....

    Preparer Fee

I also build it in. I send them all flat rate Priority just as an added precaution. There get to be more and more every year, which is fine with me. I have not seen some of my clients for years. They mail the return; then either email or fax them the 8879. Hopefully they send a check and I file and mail them their copy of the return. Unfortunately, there are still many who think that I am their best friend, counselor, grief therapist and/or solver of all problems big and small. I do willingly spend a lot of time with these people as they are the ones who pay my wages; but do, also, welcome the mail-ins who are generally people who are as busy as I am or live out of town or out of State.
  25. I have used Medlin for years, as have many of my clients. I, personally, use the ATX module to do the W2, 1099 forms with ATX uni-forms. Works for me....
