  1. WI is piggyback and it can be filed alone. Put at least $1 on the 1040 on Line 7. This will allow the e-file forms to work for you. When you create the e-file, choose state only. It will create and file just fine.
  2. Just got one that was transmitted this morning.

  4. I did put up a really nice locked drop box last year which has helped some. Not only can they drop things off securely, but they can pick up things I leave for them as there is a large clip inside of the drop-down door. They are starting to get educated on the use of this box. I also do a lot of e-mail conferencing. Clients are very receptive to that. And....many of my clients I have never seen for years because they mail or fax everything to me and I mail it back to them. However, for some reason (could it be age?) the pressure hasn't seemed to lessen. Hubby says I have to learn to say "No"! Then he comes home and says that he just got me a new client. Go figure.
  5. I don't know how I do it some days. This weekend I have left town and taken work along in order to get away from the phone and people who drop in without appts. Office in Home has advantages, but also many, many disadvantages. You all have some good ideas to offer. This year I am sending some of my PITA clients to a new gal who is just starting out and glad to get the business. Am also having her come in to help me play catchup. The "Are my taxes done yet?" calls are starting and that adds so much stress to the pressure cooker. Hope everyone has a happy and productive tax season.
  6. I am also thankful for that link. I tried to find it but couldn't find this current version. Too many different scenarios on the mind these days. It gets hectic when the phone is ringing just when I am concentrating on some subject or other. Now the questions start as to how their returns are looking. From my view they are looking like they are on a pile on the floor and will be gotten to in the order in which they came in. (Some exceptions apply and I don't say any of that to the clients). Anyway, I have gone to the woods for the weekend and brought a lot of work along. Then, on Monday I am having another gal come in to help me out with data entry. She is also a preparer trying to get her business off the ground. Enough self-abuse for me, especially with two eye surgeries this year as well as the two that my husband had.
  7. Just found out that when you update the program, it will fix it to give you a warning when you do a return check before you create the e-file. Now, they tell us.
  8. Linda....I use the last five digits of my PTIN... Now, isn't that strange. Out of 178 e-files so far, this morning I had ny first reject, for that very same reason.
  9. Deb, the credit is $6500. Where did the new husband live? Did he own a home also? I have a feeling that she won't qualify, but you can do a lot of searching before you find the answer and then still not be absolutely sure that it is the right answer. Good luck on this.
  10. Lion, a lot of the new laptops have the number pads. I have an inexpensive USB number pad that I use for mine, but then, of course, you have to have desktop room. I would never be without a desktop as my main computer, but because of being out of the office a lot, I need a laptop to work on during tax season. This year I have 2. My present desktop is a special order IBM (one of the first dual cores) that I bought in 2003 and I am not experiencing any speed problems to speak of. OS is XP. Anyway, everyone has their own preferences for their own reasons. I have been lucky in that every computer that I ever bought is still in operating condition even after being passed down and on to some friend or relative. The main thing is to take care of your equipment, use your system tools and back up regularly and often.
  11. Why scare her? I have heard that some of the E Machines are very good and this one is rated nearly 5 star by other purchasers. I have never been afraid of refurbished anything, because I believe that the bugs are out once it is gone through. Also, E Machines were made by Gateway, and I have never had anything but Gateway machines since IBM sold out to Lenovo. This also applies to both of my sons, and we have never had a problem. Also, I would think that Tiger Direct has some credibility involved. I have also heard some real horror stories about Dell machines; and these are from my computer tech. So, carolynm, I wish you well. You just may turn out to be the happiest camper in the park.
  12. KC....it wasn't that I didn't like your answer. In theory, I totally agreed with it. Another poster on another board was encouraging me to interpret it differently than you did. My mind is pretty much made up, but there is no hurry on this one. They haven't even begun negotiations for the purchase yet. Thank you for the Code cites.
  13. I am getting nowhere fast with this question and wanted to get it back to the top of the heap. It still bothers me that she owns 1/4 of the house through inheritance, but is purchasing 3/4 of it from her siblings. The credit would only be based on what she is actually purchasing. It just seems to me that there should be a black and white answer to this question instead of dark gray. Any help would be much appreciated. I don't even mind if someone tells me that I am not seeing the forest for the trees.
  14. Thanks, Bill. You are always there when I need you. I still don't know what to do, but is reassuring that this is not just another FTHB dumb question. Let's hope that someone else has a take on this. If the dad hadn't passed, she would be buying it from him and the no would be definite. The part that bothers me is the 1/4 that she owns. However, she is really just going to be buying the other 3/4. I can't think about this anymore tonight.
  15. Am sure this has been addressed before, but I cannot find the answer. Four siblings inherit house. One sibling (my client)wants to purchase the house from the other three. She would be a second phase FTHB; meaning that this is not her first purchase of a home. I said that she did not qualify. The original ATX Community board says that she does because siblings are not considered related parties. My question is, What about the 1/4 that she inherited? There is a clear question on the new 5405 which asks, "Did you purchase the home from a related party?" Am I supposed to say NO and let her take the credit? I am so confused at this point that I really need help. Am I overthinking an area that appears dark gray to me? Thanks to anyone who can give me a cite.
  16. In WI, a copy of the FED always goes along with the state; so, of course, the 5404 would be included. That is an interesting question and certainly worth a try.
  17. Priceless!!!!! :D
  18. Did not claim the beet soup because we did not eat it. Does that still count?
  19. Did you try to get a driver from the manufacturer of your printer. I have a one year old HP and we had to go to HP for a driver for Win 7. Other than that, no problems so far.
  20. Yes., KC is correct as usual. My further good news is that I checked to see when I prepared the amendment on my gal with the cosigners. It was 1/7/10 and she already has her check. Some things are moving right along.
  21. My single taxpayer (who is now married) and had her parents co-sign for the mortgage when she bought her house; just got her check today.
  22. I have 7 64 Bit on my laptop. I was able to install ATX 2008 and 2009 without a problem. Followed the directions in the Knowledgebase for copying 2008 clients from desktop to laptop. Can roll them over into 2009 as needed. As for printing., my friend was able to download a driver for Win 7 from HP for my main printer which I can access wireless from the laptop. I do the majority of returns on desktop with XP; but tried this experiment so as to have a backup for myself as well as being able to have someone come in and help me if need be. So far, so good.
  23. No, he just talks and I listen.....kind of like reverse confessional. He brings me Kielbasa, Pierogi, raffle tickets to parish events and lots of loving kindness and respect. (Sorry, thought you were addressing my clergy client, but realize now that you are speaking to michael.
  24. A gal just picked up her tax return; brought a case of Kraft Macaroni and cheese.; cookies and two cans of coffee. (Of course, it is Sunday). Prior to today, I have gotten gift cards and money so far this year. I never get bottles of anything, but did get a 12 pack of beer once. Add flowers, sticky notes, post-it notes, plants, beet soup (yuk) and all sorts of bakery, candles, pens and odds and ends. I have some pretty creative clients.; and generally do pretty well in the tip department. OH, also have a priest who calls me his angel and prays for me constantly. Who could ask for more than that?
  25. You're welcome. I already had a can of light beer.
