Sounds like it was still part of the construction costs of the shopping center and should therefore be capitalized as part of the construction and build out.

Note that many states no longer require we sign up directly, so long as we have been authorized by IRS. Still you may not be able to efile a state when you have someone that lived in multiple states and you have to file part year resident returns. IL for one will not let you efile if you moved in or out of it to a state that does not border it.

Section 179 is for new assets only. I t has nothing to do with whether or not it is a vehicle but just whether or not an asset qualifies as 179 property.

Well I have arrived in Vegas, sans the furniture which will arrive 1 week late. Colorado and Utah were beautiful, Iowa had major storms but is a boring drive anyway and Nebraska I drove through in the middle of the night so couldn't see much more than the road! So back to work now. And I have a question regarding a loss on an investment in a couple of condos: My client was trying to purchase 2 condominiums to be used as rental properties. Due to a number of factors (mainly the stupidity of my client) the buys fell apart and my client lost his earnest money of $27,000. Now I am trying to figure out where in the 1040 I can write this off. I thought of thought following possibilities: 1. schedule A as investment exp. this will limit the loss slightly in his case, but bottom line is about the same as a sched e loss and I think this is the best place at this point 2. thought of sched E but since he never purchased the condos, I don't believe this would be appropriate 3. Also thought of sched D, but this also limits the loss in the current year and again I am not sure this is an appropriate place as he did not purchase the condos he lost his money on. Thx in advance

Committee Wants to Fine Tax Preparers Who Don't E-file
joelgilb replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
Guess I should have expanded on my post. I do think e-file is generally the way to go. However, I do agree that it should NOT be mandated. Government has too much control in every facet of our lives and Orwell's 1984 is certainly more a reality today than it was in 1984. Take the Patriot Act for instance; another Red Scare IMHO. I do wonder if IRS's motivation is the ability to shut down a preparer or to eliminate basic keypunch jobs and shift their resources to other areas, such as audit and collection. Not sure we will ever know, but I agree that if they get the power, they will eventually abuse it and attack our ability to prepare returns by attacking our EFIN's. -
Committee Wants to Fine Tax Preparers Who Don't E-file

John, I have converted several hold outs to E-file and once they tried it they wondered why they didn't convert sooner. Try it You'll Like it! As for me, I was one of the first in my area to offer Free E-file, when everyone else was charging for it. Brought in a number of clients at the time (got me from around 750 returns to over 1000. I since scaled back and restructured my practice and got rid of most of the easy returns and focus more on representation in front of IRS , appeals and Tax Court (don't kill myself this way). -
XP is a better operating system than Vista. Vista like the old ME is flawed. Bought my daughter a Dell laptop for college and DOWNGRADED to XP! Time MS realized that Vista is a Piece of Sh*T

Already renewed. Like the program and the tech support is not a major issue for me

It is not there unless you add it in. Go to tools and then addins on the menu and it will provide a link to the Firefox site where you can add custom features to your Firefox. One of those features is IE Tab another IE View, then load them in. You might find all sorts of other add ins you will like there as well. But don't go overboard, as one of the nice features of Firefox is that it is Trim and Slim!

Thinking Jainen is right on the money here. How was the account titled? Was there a Will and was a Probate needed and if so filed? An Executor or Administer appointed? Merrill Lynch can't require a final return, it is none of their business!

Use a program called Mionet (at mionet.com) now owned by Western Digital. Had tried several of the others and this one seems to offer much more at lower price. You can load it on up to 5 machines simultaneously and it is the only one that you can actually load mionet on your clients machine and then let them have some level of access to yours while you are doing the controlling. This feature is a great way to show your clients how to access their protected folders on your PC. I setup folders for my clients, drop documents in their folder and allow them access to only this folder and they have 24/7 access. Have also used this to control my other machines, daughters machines at college to help them etc all at one price.

A lot of the major sites write their code specifically for Internet Explorer and then any of the other browsers can have problems. With firefox there is an easy fix, just get the IE addin and then the sites think they are dealing with Forefox and generally behave. I have almost never seen a site that I have to switch to IE once I did this

have a program that unlocks the PDF security. Actually got it because I forgot my own encoded password. Works like a charm. Of course I am sure everyone must have this. LOL

what is it/ how much does it cost? and What does it do for our practices?

Funny But remember a great icon did die recently George Carlin!
-
He has been on recently, so that is probably not it Could it be that he was not signed in when he noticed the difference. I notice that when not signed in the site does look diff. No icons etc

CA preparers - rental loss cfw for nonresident
joelgilb replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Have a client that went to Ernst and they always did a return for passive losses in CA but had to create custom schedules to show and explain the carryforward. CA when there was income did allow the cfds -

They have murdered so many companies over the years! And their mode of operations is to take over others, then either discontinue the product and force you into their other products, sometimes without tell you they discontinued your product. And/or debundling the product and selling each piece as an extra module for money (For instance Quickbooks Payroll). They also have often had known issues and bugs that they hide from their customers and tech support

Mine too. Hanging head in shame My first PC was the Coleco Fiasco

Sorry Tom, since you are in CA I am sure you are right and know CA law better than I could possibly guess. Looks like he is stuck. And as Jainen said, the penalty amount is small. If he can't pay it all at once, you might have more "Billable" work in negotiating a payment plan though.
