  1. Have MIONET (similar to LogMein and Go to My PC, but more sophisticated options) and , but for server type applications it is too slow, also I requires that one person control the server. Need a reasonable priced solution that let's everyone be able to tunnel in through a terminal type server. Citrix Server at 6K is to pricey.
  2. KC That's exactly what I do. But now it will not let me do this. I have a password program that remembers all my "Hundreds" of logins and passwords and also lets me set Expiration Dates, to remind me to change them. ATX will no longer let me change the password in either of the 2 methods. Have an email to tech support to get it fixed, but still I think they need to hear from us again. They are not listening!
  3. That's exactly where I was and it does not work for me.
  4. How about doing what I am trying to setup. A "terminal Server" to allow ATX to network across the internet. Tested it for QuickBooks and it seems to work smooth. Have not yet tried it for ATX. Then, maybe my office can help you out.
  5. Has anyone tried to network ATX across multiple sites via the internet? I will be having at least one person working from a home office this year and want to give them access to the same data files. Thought of using a Terminal Server if there is no other way, but your thoughts would be appeciated.
  6. Maybe we should start posting to the ATX website again and let people know that this one exists. BTW, Eric, how are you for money for the site so far this year? Time for more donations???
  7. And I though I was a sick individual! LOL
  8. Agreed. Congress fixed this hole a number of years ago.
  9. I have several times in the past complained about the password structure at ATX's "Official" site. And once again I am having a problem it. Since their password system is so unwieldy, I had made the decision to change passwords on a monthly basis, using a date system (password+mo & year, ie: pwd1208), requiring staff to do the same. This would allow myself and staff the ability to remember the passwords, just by knowing what month it was. Until recently this worked fine. Now however I am unable to reset the password at all. ATX continues to come back with an error message indicating "current password is incorrect". Since there is no place to input the current password when changing a password, I am now unable to update my ATX password. As we all are aware, their password system is cumbersome and unwieldy, I am suggesting that we all once again renew our objections to their current system. Although I am not sure my suggestion for password changes to ATX are sufficient, I have sent ATX the following suggestion , which I am including for all here to see. I suggest we all once again remind ATX of the ridiculous measures they take to secure their website. MY ATX SUGGESTION: "Password rules for website are too restrictive. Causes users to have to write down the password in an insecure fashion in our offices, allowing others in the office access. Also causes users to have to lookup the address on paper each time making the website time consuming and difficult to get into, thus reducing the usability of the site. A site I used to use regularly, I find I rarely go to now, finding it easier to make a phone call to tech support instead. Suggest allowing at least the ability to rotate passwords every other time, so passwords can be committed to memory. Further, changing passwords does not always work. Several times I had to get tech support to reset so I could change the password. In addition, it wastes staff time trying to get into the site costing money to my office in wasted administrative staff time. I have also found staff also writing the passwords down in insecure places in an attempt to remember login information. This allows access by anyone that walks into my office, who can then get into the site. Although I currently have no knowledge of this happening I am concerned that clients would have access to secure information. Please fix your system." If anyone else has any thoughts or suggestions, post them here and let's all send them to ATX. Joel
  10. last return here had a taxpayer that plays with stock options. this year was light with only 265 transactions. Of course we can not download the activity into excel and of course taxpayer is adamant about e-filing and not manually filing and just attaching the last statement! Finally, he is married but do to a divorce with a foreign spouse, he and his U.S. wife file married filing separately and the account is half hers. Well at least I can copy his over to hers! And bill for DOUBLE ENTRY!
  11. I was thinking of Raising Able, Cain's brother! or does he have a cute illegitimate 18+ sister to raise?
  12. both options have pluses and minuses. You need to do an analysis of the benefits and detriments for the specific client, lay out the tax savings and costs in both cases and let them decide which makes the most sense. This is not a question of one over the other all the time! Beside, consider this an additional revenu generator for your office this way as well
  13. Do the same as John here. If you had an old version of ATX, 2004 or 2005 I think, PDF factory was included for free. if not you can purchase it for fairly little money and it is a GREAT program. Note that I liked it so much, I purchased the later version.
  14. you should be able to either copy the data files, presuming of course they are not corrupt, or just point the new installation to the old files. Of course backup the old files with some external software, or just copy them to a CD. Note the files you are looking for end in the following; .qbw (main file and may be all that is needed) .qbw.tlg & .qbw.nd Depending on version of course. Note, that if the data file is corrupt, sometimes Intuit can still recover it.
  15. Oh and an addendum: It used to be that drafting of Articles of Incorporation, Organization etc was considered the practice of law. Today, most States allow anyone to prepare these documents, so you are allowed to prepare those.
  16. Most States consider the drafting of legal documents as "The Practice of Law" (unless of course you are drafting soley for yourself) and it is illegal for anyone but a lawyer to perform legal services. Although, you would probably get away with it, all you need is one disgruntled member down the road to cause you major grief. Refer them to an attorney.
  17. Happy Belated B-Day! Damn, always a day late and dollar short here!
  18. Yea Baby!!! Although I am now in Vegas, I am still a Chicago boy! Of course because of that I am waiting to see how they screw up this time. Hoping of course that they don't. Also, wondering if the Sox (Cubs fan at heart, fair weather fan for the Sox) will make it. And don't want to see them and the Cubs in the World Series. Couldn't handle it if the Cubs actually lost the big one to the Sox!
  19. Thx All. I was pretty sure that this was prohibited, but couldn't find any source that indicated that. As for the BK attorney, he is less than cooperative on my behalf. I did however find out that ATX was incorrect on me being setup for fee collect. Contacted the Santa Barbara Bank and they had an account already setup for me. Since I never used it I didn't remember setting it up. Would have thought when I called ATX they would have had it on file to tell me the correct answer. So problem solved Thx again
  20. I was just about to answer this myself, but Jainen with his usual expertise did a superb job just minutes before I drafted a reply, therefore as Stan Lee says Nuff said Oh and yes I am finally back!
  21. I have a client that is going bankrupt and needs me to prepare their 2007 tax returns (corp and indiv). In order to get paid, therefore (under the BK rules my fee is discharged also, even if I am not listed - Please no comments on this issue as I am a former BK attorney and am sure of this) I need to collect my fees either with for the 2007 tax returns or up front. Obviously if they are going bankrupt they can not pay up front. I have not setup RAL or Fee collect and ATX and the Santa Barbra bank will not set me up for 2007. I was wondering if I could use form 8888 to have a portion of the fee deposited to my bank to cover my fees. I can also have them sign an agreement direct with me allowing the transfer to my account to pay my fees. My only concern is if there is some law or breach that would cause me concern down the road. thx Joel
  22. sorry, here what happens when you move, you don't have your current research materia as it is still boxed up and use the old stuff. Jainen is correect, the assets just has to be new to you. Think I am going back to unpacking boxes. Yikes what a mess!
  23. Sending Jainen 3 bananas for his fee and then leasing his advice to all my clients See you in Hawaii Mel
  24. Forgot, you should also go to the "Form Update" tab and set the preferences here. You can also do a manual update rather than an automatic and see if the update manager pops up and you can download specific forms directly fro this window.
  25. If he is clicking the update button in ATX, I don't think the browser he used really matters. I use Firefox myself not IE as I think it is more secure. Check your preference and check the "Internet" tab. Does he have a high speed continuous connection to the internet. Is this box checked? Note everyone, have you ever since ATX pull up our browser when you update this way? I for one have not and therefore believe ATX handles this internally.
