  1. Similar return practice. Decided that the low end scanners like HP are way to slow and ended up with a Kodak I65 which I paid almost 1800.00 for. 35 pages per minute and does duplex scanning at 70 images per minute. Plus they gave a free version of a high end scanning software that retails in the $3000 to $5000 range (with extra features that most don't need as the free has almost all). Software alone in my opinion was worth the price. Had actually purchased PaperPort right before I purchased this scanner. After using Kodak's software I uninstalled PaperPort. No comparison. I know that this sounds like a lot, but had the scanners at the level you are talking about and was way to slow. The extra speed of a higher end scanner more than pays for itself over even just a couple of years. Plus I think this level of scanner is substantially cheaper now (800 to 1500 range I think). I would look at Kodak or Fujitsu. don't be cheap on your business tools, you will pay for it in other ways!
  2. This is obviously a rhetorical and no more need be added!
  3. Have that problem every now and then and when it happens I can't print to any print driver in Windows from ATX, but every other software works just fine. Like jasdlm said though, restart ATX and the problem is corrected (until the next time).
  4. Ask him where he learned tax law Marilyn is correct he has to pay PA tax if he is a PA resident!
  5. The Sec 754 deductions are due to a stepup of the inside basis in the partnership All expenses (usually depreciation) on the stepup are attributed to the new partners and directly effect their income on the k1. THis is deduction you see less often these days, although I have had partnerships I deal with make the 754 election from time to time. You will need to add a K-1 input on the 1040 and put this on the same line as the other income from the k-1 showing it as a 754 allocation.
  6. Never mind. WV site suggests that there is a seperate IT-140 NR/PY but this is not correct they just like many States have a NR/PY form to attach to the return which I found.
  7. Have a client that needs to file a West Virgina Non-Resident Return due to a partnership k1-. According to the WV website this is form IT-140 NR/PY. I do not see this form in the ATX list of forms. Anyone have any idea how to handle this, short of manually preparing a return and mailing it in?
  8. Agree with Julie though. An S-Corp may help her save taxes and it would increase your fees. Although I doubt her financial advisor was smart enough to think of this. He was probably thinking he could increase her retirement plan options and invest more with him, making him so much more money than everyone else in the picture.
  9. that's what I meant, under 18. Thx Zeke!
  10. Anyone know if wages paid by a parent (from Sched C) to their children are still exempt from social security tax?
  11. received an e-mail from Kathy Hughes at TRX and she indicated she would be coming on here to answer our questions and concerns.
  12. If you are able to get it into excel, you can cut and paste it into ATX with almost no effort
  13. Just sent an email to TRX asking them to come here and answer our questions.
  14. Great idea. TRX can you give us the full details of the ATX offerings? You have obviously peaked our interests.
  15. Always enter them all and bill accordingly. Not my problem if they are trading in large numbers. Some clients are also able to get their information into an Excel spreadsheet and then I can reformat it and copy right into ATX. Still I charge a little extra for the additional transactions, just not as much as line by line entry. And - Sorry I agree 5 to 10 min for 20 trans. Unprotect the form and you can enter some items faster by keying down the form rather than across and you see a dramatic speed increase in entry. And attach the statement. hmmm. 2.1 nanoseconds to staple/attach form, time to go to the copy machine or scanner, prepare an envelope and 8453 and mail to irs. How much time does that take. Hard to believe less than 10 minutes! Enter the transactions and Bill the client.
  16. Did you use the $299 or $699 version and if so what are the differences, their site does not really explain it. I always purchase at least Max and for a while purchased total tax office. TRX $299 is which ATX package? and TRX $699 is which ATX package?
  17. Still can't figure out why ATX dumped PDFFACTORY as it is a great little program. I actually purchased pdfFactory Pro which has some nice additional features, including password security, watermarks and letterhead template ability. http://www.fineprint.com They are willing to give an upgrade price for those that had the free version from ATX, or at least they did in my case. I did purchase it a couple of years ago though when ATX removed it. Have several other PDF softwares including Adobe Acrobat Pro 7.0, but this is my favorite for a down and dirty pdf printer and it makes the smallest files.
  18. Agree with John, need a cutoff date. I don't guarantee a return will be completed if it comes into my office after March 31st, although if I can complete them I will. And the last 2 days are EXTENSIONS and EMERGENCIES ONLY! But I don't quit after Oct 14th as rest of the year is IRS Rep and Tax Court! Much more fun and better income too!
  19. demo'ed Taxwise and just don't like it personally. Also, ATX offers tons of forms that I find extremely useful in the legal end of my practice, with the ability to costomize and almost make a mini legal package. Downside to ATX has always been speed. Not the fastest program on the market. Also, other than TRx it was more reasonably priced

    FYI

See the discussion I started in the General Chit Chat community. they actually offered it last year and called me to sign up for this year since I use ATX. Trying to figure out if it will really be the same as the ATX offered by CCH Apparently the support will improve, but will CCH decide not to sell it ti TRX? Will they cripple some of the packages features.
  21. time to retire? 30? 40? 50? 60? 65? 70? 75? 80? 85? I wanted to retire at 30, but couldn't afford to. Once i can I am out of here! What's the point of killing ourselves to earn a living and saving for retirement if we can't then enjoy life. Of course this economy has changed my retirement date. Thought I was close, but then the depression hit! damn!
  22. Deal sounds good, but their site really doesn't show what you get when you buy the ATX package. And what incentive does CCH have to continue the product if we switch to TRX for less money
  23. TRX did not sell Intellitax to CCH, Orrtax sold Intellitax to CCH then CCH discontinued the product leaving TRX without a product to sell. They then provided them with ATX instead. So it sounds like TRX does what CCH would not. Stnad behind the product and support their customers. Or am I missing something? And btw, 75 and still doing taxes? I hope to be retired for several years by the time I reach 75. Hard enough to handle tax seasons in my 50's.
  24. TRX Alliance is a company that discounts tax software and provides some other software for accountants. There is actually a forum on this website specifically for TRX. Concern is what TRX is providing vs what CCH Taxwise is providing on ATX.
  25. I had tried the demo of Intellitax and Taxwise from TRE and stayed away just because the 2 softwares TRX offered were not equivalent to ATX in my opinion. Now just wondering if what they are offering is the full ATX package and their site is not much help yet.
