  1. I take a day off but I don't like to plan a regular vacation immediately after the tax season. A few weeks later or a month or two later for me.
  2. I don't get the message of the original poster. But off and on this year, I would click on the ATX icon to open it and nothing happens. I restart and all is well. But this is something new to me this year. Not sure what's going on.
  3. I just received one and all it had was the bank name. Nothing else. No document the client was trying to send.
  4. Ha, my sophomore HS English class, we had to recite Marc Anthony's speech. Friends, Romans, Countrymen, Lend me your ears.
  5. Ha, I usually can't read this time of year. Too tired. I did have some wine last night though.
  6. When I have a surviving spouse return, I make the surviving spouse the primary taxpayer. I'm not sure if this would have prevented your problem.
  7. I don't call IRS for clients. I have them call. The client can wait for hours on the phone instead of me.
  8. I hate to post too, not bad things for me. But I've been doing a group hiking thing the past few years, one weekend a month. I started out skipping the first 3 months of the year. Their final group in April is usually after the tax due date. Then I started going for the January weekend, I was not too busy. Then added February. Then the past few years, going in March. It was tough to take a weekend off in March. This year they threw me a curve and no hikes after the tax due date but I went anyway in April, this past weekend April 1-2. I was working even longer the past few weeks to get ahead of the game. It felt refreshing to take the weekend off this late in the tax season. I've been trying to cut back the past few years but it seems I've been busier than normal. I have been cutting back the past few years after the due date. Fridays off, shorter hours the other four days.
  9. Or if filing a superseding return, do you just duplicate the original instead of 'amending'?
  10. I've been filing 1310 with the return in the past. Recently, a client (sister, executrix) received a letter from IRS, called IRS, was told they needed Form 56. I didn't see in ATX. I got the form from irs.gov, completed it and she mailed it it. Then another client, I just completed the Form 56 for him and efiled the 1040, he mailed the Form 56, hoping we could cut the time short and avoid an IRS letter. This is my first knowledge of the Form 56. Can you file it with the return as a pdf attachment?
  11. What is a Google voice number? I suppose you have to pay for it. I have a Google email address in addition to my regular email address. Does the voice (texts) come thru on your regualr Google account? Or do you have to set up a different account?
  12. I kept hearing about a superseded return but I didn't know if you still used 1040X. From the other comments, I guess you just file the 1040X.
  13. Do we have to wait until after April 18 to file an amended return for 2022? Is that an IRS stipulation?

I've not had any problems with this either.

I have a client who sold a rental house at a big gain. Whoops. Had to pay back all $12k of the PTC (plus tax on the gain). He's only a year away from Medicare. But he didn't have a mortgage so he's got all the money from the sale on hand.
  16. I was able to get the ATX program to add the additional std deduction. But IRS rejected it. I tried looking at ATX, checking and unchecking boxes. I recommended to client to efile 2022 without the additional std decuction. It was accepted by IRS. This is my first year for this client. He self prepared 2021 and paper filed it and following instructions included the higher std deduction amount. He received a letter from IRS. I composed a response letter. He has not heard back from IRS. I told him we will wait until he receives a response from IRS regarding 2021. Interesting comments from all. If anyone does this, let us know if IRS accepts or rejects even if the software allows for it.
  17. I was looking at that. But thinking 'taxable' ss. Thanks.
  18. Thanks. I was looking at irs.gov and sheesh.
  19. I thought 2021 was the first year we could efile an amended return. But ATX is letting me create an efile to amend a 2020 return. Just checking with others.
  20. That was my source.
  21. I found a Form 5129 Questionnaire regarding the spouse. I added that to the return. It would not be included in the efiling. So I attached it as a pdf. Still didn't work. Same IRS rejection code. I didn't think it would work but gave it a try. If I don't get a solution for the efiling to go thru, I guess I'll have the client efile with only himself claiming the additional $1400 std ded. Then maybe paper file an amended return. We're only talking about $300. But it's still annoying.
  22. According to 1040 instructions and Parker general analysis, this appears appropriate. I couldn't find a reference in Parker to Code or Regs. Name and SSN of spouse is included. I checked the box for both being over 65 and ATX calculates the std ded at $15,750. But the IRS rejection says Total does not equal number of boxes checked. I have two boxes checked but where would I verify what 'Total' is. Two should equal two. I'm not sure if I'm missing something to check in ATX or IRS computers just won't accept this.
  23. Client is married, living apart. Spouse only has SS and does not file. Both are over 65. It seems he can file MFS and take the standard deduction plus $1400 for himself and another $1400 for spouse. ATX has let me enter the info and calculates the additional std ded. But I'm getting a rejection from IRS. The error code is F1040-395-01 It just says the Total Boxes checked must equal the count of the checkboxes. The two boxes on the return are checked. Am I missing something to check in ATX? Anyone else run into this?
  24. Thanks for the update. I'll have to update my own memory. Ha. I'm not familiar with Raven, but apparently it is slow too.
  25. What year does the loss occur? Year of the disaster itself or maybe the following year when damage is repaired and costs more than insurance reimbursements? If client doesn't know yet, how can I determine the loss in 2022. Can he claim it in 2023?
