I was working with Vista, so this is a whole new experience. Frustration level only reached 10/10 a few times today.

I bought a new computer with Win 10, and it's a pretty steep learning curve for me. I have used Cox for my email address and Windows Mail forever. Had to buy MS Office Home and Business with Outlook to get that to work. Had to enter my contacts in one at a time. Couldn't transfer my emails over to the new computer. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

Thanks for sharing your experience, and I will call first thing in the AM.

Thanks for the helpful link! I believe I am following the suggestions. I prepared the info listed in exhibit A and will send copies to the client. I have to respond to a valid subpoena and am not commiting any breach of confidentiality, right? I did confer with my attorney. He said this was no big deal. I'll probably get in touch with my E&O insurance provider on Monday. I can't figure out how the plaintiff attorney even got my contact info. He said he received nothing in the way of financial statements from the client. I don't think there is any public record. Hmmmm. Oh well.

Ordered a large pizza and huge antipasto salad. Going to binge watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Netflix and stay up real late. Digging around for most comfy jammies. Turning AC down to about 60 and resurrecting soft lap blankie. Hate everything right now. Practically sucking my thumb at this juncture. Dealing with a new computer and the pleasure of Win10, hubby out of town, and now this annoying subpoena. Thanks for listening. See, it's times like this when a nice soft cat purring in your lap just solves everything.

RANT: There are too many bad preparers out there
BHoffman replied to Abby Normal's topic in General Chat
I spend quite some time educating my clients, especially the business clients. They know all about their profit and loss reports, and I show them the M-1 as where their books, that they understand to the penny, meet their tax return - which loses its mystery once they are shown the "book to tax" adjustments. I think a big problem with crappy tax preparers might start with them taking on more decision making than is even remotely wise. Clients don't pay us to make their decisions, they pay us to explain and ask the right questions. We really should charge more money -
Received a subpoena today! Some guy is suing my client over some profit sharing thing over this one construction job. I have to submit (by mail) to the plaintiff's attorney the financials, my invoices to the client, and some job costing work papers. I sent a copy of the subpoena to my client and yelled at him over the phone that I did not appreciate being hauled into his mess. On the advice of my attorney, I told him if he wanted to object to the subpoena then he would have to pay his lawyer to do that. Otherwise I would be complying and sending off the requested documents. I also spoke to the plaintiff attorney and asked why he wanted my invoices. He said to see how much of my fees were allocated to that job. None. He was pretty nice and assured me that I wasn't under any threat. My attorney assured me of same. I am just livid.

Oooooh Judy good point! No Sch B was filed and no other notices have been received. The client decided to just pay it and is now making 3 day deposits whether he has to or not.

QB and SCorps are different animals than the dreaded ACA, but here goes I believe you should treat the subsidy repayment as you would any normal health insurance premium in the year (re)paid. See "Don't miss the health insurance deduction if you're self employed" on the IRS.gov website. HTH and stay cool

It used to be hard for me to say NO. Life got a whole lot easier after I learned how. Yesterday, a PITA client who was MIA this year called and left a message saying she had filed her own return. She just had a tax question. Did I return her call? NO. WIll I answer the phone if she calls again? NO. So, I think to remain sane in this job the ability to say NO is crucial....and say it in a nice way, maybe with a big hug

Very sorry to hear this and will send prayers for healing the family's pain.

I can double click on the expense field and a list page will open. I use that a lot for the same reason.

speaking of getting hacked, what security software do you use?

AVG and Malwarebytes and, like Lion, other things my IT guy tells me to use. -
The 1045 was accepted with IRS corrections, leaving the refund short by around $2k. I use Drake, no excuse but the data entry is awkward and I let it calculate the AGI after carry back. That number was wrong and I did not catch it. I filled out the rest of the form correctly, but IRS changed those numbers to correspond with the incorrect AGI. So, I'm wondering whether to mail a reply with a new 1045 and explanation, or send in a 1040X requesting the $2k balance. Thanks for advice and hope every is enjoying the summer.

I made a mistake on form 1045. Any advice on how to submit a corrected form? Thanks!

Thanks! I don't know why I have this weird aversion to listing things in that "other" section.

Working with Sch C. Client is very involved with a MLM thing, selling supplements. He attends sales seminars that cost about $2k per year. His taxable income is about $100k per year. I'm not sure how to code the seminar expense. Advertising, since they give out advice and promo materials? Or "Other" and list it as "Seminar expense"? Happy Summer!

If Books and Pro are arguing over a sale price, the only thing that is important is the current fair market value. That would have nothing to do with old records. The succeeding accounting must any pertinent and timely information, not you. Your information is so old that it cannot still have any relevance. I would be very tempted to ignore everything about this unless served with a subpoena. If that were to happen, then I'd contact E&O. Please don't lose any sleep over this. The attorney fees start piling up and then 99.999% of the time they agree on some sort of settlement.

A nice guy, employed by one of my clients, needs some help. He had his taxes prepared by one of those firms who evidently pulls up stakes and leaves after the tax season. They gave him a copy of the return and then called to say there was some problem with efiling. He cannot get in touch with them. The office is closed, no one answers the phone, no one returns his calls. It's been a month. We checked "where's my refund" for both fed and state, and it looks like the returns were not filed. The fee was supposed to have been taken from his refund and paid directly to the preparer. I've never done bank products, so I have a question. If I prepare and efile his tax return, will their fee still be taken from his refund?

Yikes! I haven't had a credit card in many years. Now, I want one that will offer travel miles. Airline tickets are so expensive! It's hard to decide which card. Any suggestions? Also, I'm not happy about putting my SSN, DOB, average income, name and address on the application. ID theft information in full

What percentage is that? Might be a more accurate measure since we all vary in our total returns.

For some reason, I'm always suspicious of hand written forms and wonder whether the payer actually submitted them to IRS or not.
-
You can't really know how the payer is handling the corrected 1099. Can the client get a letter from the payer explaining their error and keep that in the client's file for the CP2000 that might be coming?
