  1. In my case the 2-Year comparison is populating. I don't know what (if anything) I am doing differently. Before I start preparing a return I verify that everything in the TaxWorks 2009 matches what I had in ATX 2009. Then I "upgrade" it to 2010. On the 2 year comparison, I check the box at the top to prepare the 2 year comparison. Then when I "peek" at the 2 year return it is there. OK, actually only the 1st page is there, but the 2nd page shows up when I print. I don't know if that will help.

    SCH C

I had this in some of my early testing. I had a 1099 Misc feed to the Sch C, but I had also done a manual entry directly on the Sch C (because I knew the amount). The software added the 2 figures. I found out on another return that was what it was supposed to do. Client had 1099Misc AND additional income. I was looking for a place to input the extra (like in ATX), but found it just went directly on the Sch C, Hope that helps.
  3. Thanks. I'll go back and check.
  4. On a somewhat related note -- Is there anyway to completely delete a form that not needed? Client had a 1099 Misc in their 2009 return. It rolled over to 2010 (as it should have). However they don't have it for this year. So I went to the drop-down box at the top (where you can add more 1099s) and chose "delete" and then marked the check box and deleted. The info is gone, but the form is still in the "used" list. I tried to delete it from there with a right click, but that only gives me the choice of "complete." It's not a big deal because there is no data there and it doesn't appear in the Review section. I'd just like it to be gone from the "used" list. This is true with the Sch C, Sch A, and a few other forms (like the one from Puerto Rico). Thanks
  5. Crank -- I feel you should charge what you are comfortable charging to give you the profit you want. Look how much lower your expenses are by not advertising or paying for a separate office space.
  6. I never said it had anything to do with the tax code. Just looking for other ways to "compensate." I would have a hard time working some place where the nearest restroom is over 2 blocks away. But no, it's not something the IRS can help with.
  7. Agree that it's personal and not business. But aren't there laws about providing restroom facilities at a place of business?

    9325?

I just e-filed my 1st 2010 return and it was accepted. The e-file center shows a pretty good acknowledgment letter. However, I've always used the IRS Form 9325. I don't see it available in TaxWorks. The letter in the EF center seems to have almost everything the 9325 had except the submission center used (i.e. Austin in my case). I would like to have a 9325 in my tax file. I guess their letter is a good substitute, but would still like to know if the 9325 is available (and just hiding). Thanks.
  9. I've only done a few sample returns and I've seen it. i didn't pay a lot of attention to it and haven't noticed if it is on all of them. I'm guessing if nothing is on it, it won't do anything?? Let us know what you find out. Maybe it is something I should worry about
  10. Another password variation I saw on TV was to use your "easy" password. Then, when typing, move your fingers up one row from the "home keys" on the keyboard. That helps you get random numbers into your password. So using your "hello" example would become: y3oo9. This works best if you are a "touch typist."

    PINs

I've always* given a copy of the 8879 to the client after they (and I) signed it And, yes, it's the copy with the full SSN on it. * at least the last couple of years. Previously my remote signers may or may not have had a copy with my signature.
  12. I think Gold Key will do those things for me, too. You can encrypt a file or folder -- as much or as little as you want. I want something better than what I have -- which is just a password on Windows. They can still get in through DOS. Hopefully with Gold Key (or PGP) anything they want is encrypted. And hopefully they can't get to anything without the key. Gold Key also has a method for encrypting e-mails and attachments. I haven't read up on that part, yet. I may play with that after I get the basics encrypted. I look forward to hearing your results. I still would like to hear from any Gold Key users (if there are any) and users of other encryption options. Good or bad so I know what to try or what to avoid. Thanks.
  13. It looks interesting. I'm kind of glad to see this from Norton rather than McAfee. I had nothing but trouble with McAfee many years ago. I used to use Norton for all my security utilities until a couple of years ago. Then it started giving me problems (slowed down the computer and various conflicts). Are you using PGP? I'd be curious how well it works. Even if it is 3 times the cost of the Gold Key. Thanks for the suggestion.
  14. They also have some kind of Grand Master and Master keys but that is more for a corporate environment. If a key is lost, a higher key can still access the data. For me it will just be the one token and I can register it with Gold Key. I haven't done that yet, but that process is supposed to let them help you get back into your system if you lose the key. I don't know that I'm particularly high risk. I figure if someone were to steal my computer it would just be to pawn it. But I am trying to find an EASY way to increase the protection of my clients' data. Granted it hasn't been encrypted for the last 10 years. I have a password for getting into Windows, but if someone wants the data (and they know it's there), they can get it from DOS. When I leave my home office, I put the computer in the safe. But when I travel I don't have a safe. I do try to take precautions, but anything could happen. So I'm just looking for an easy way to keep the data safe. I might not really need the encryption if the Gold Key will give me a way to lock the whole computer and not just Windows (I haven't seen that it does that) I like that there is an extra level of protection besides a password. Knowing you have to have the gizmo AND a password makes it more secure.
  15. While searching for a new flash drive, I saw a Gold Key Token. It's a USB gizmo that you use to encrypt your computer files. They can't be opened unless this gizmo is inserted and the password is entered. It sounded like a nice easy way for me to encrypt the data on my computer. I bought it at Fry's for $50 & read the manual (well, most of it) and it looks like it will do what I want (inexpensive way to secure my data). But I'm not sure how much it will slow things down. I'm still kinda nervous because if I do anything wrong, I can destroy everything. I'm fairly computer savvy but this has such a high risk factor. Has anyone used this product? Does it work as advertised? Specifically does it work with ATX (and TaxWorks) since those files have to be in a specific location? Thanks!
  16. I bought a Vista laptop on 7/1/07 and replaced it with a Windows 7 laptop in December 2009. By 1/15/10 I had moved everything over to the new computer and moved it into personal use. (It's a 17" and good for movies -- after a complete re-format.) Anyway, my original intention was to use it 100% for business for the foreseeable future and took the Section 179 deduction for the full $828. So now I need to recapture the depreciation. How do I do this in TaxWorks since they do not have a "moved to personal use" option? Do I show a "sale" on 1/15/10 or just show personal use dropping to 4%? I can do manual entries on Form 4797 Part IV, but just trying to figure out how the software wants me to handle this. (Granted I've only done this a couple of times in ATX, so I'm not really an expert on Sect. 179 recapture anyway! But that's why I use QuickFinders and / or Tax Book.) Thanks!
  17. Congrats. 20 hours is amazing. Back in the day I took 15 hours most semesters and only managed to have time for ~3 hours sleep per night! So with taking 20 hours, I guess she was running on negative sleep time?
  18. I don't know if this will work, but you could try to run Quickbooks in emulation mode. You should be able to tell it to emulate XP. I did this for my ATX programs when I switched to Vista and then to Windows 7. I'm not on my PC right now (I'm on my Mac), but I think you right click on the program file and go to properties. I think there is an option somewhere for emulation. I don't know if it will work for a 64 bit / 32 bit conflict, but it's free and shouldn't really hurt anything. You can always change it back.
  19. I did the online chat with tech support and she wanted me to call in and do a screen share. I'm still not comfortable with this option (but will do it as a last resort). I asked about the un-install / re-install idea and she thought it might work. I did that and still got a few errors, so I "repaired" the programs (09 & 10) in the un-install software control panel. So far things are running more smoothly, but I can't say all errors are gone. When I clicked on the box to enter "advanced" 1099 Int, I got a very long message about "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." But I can't tell it had any impact. I entered data and it flowed where it was supposed to. I'm also still getting Microsoft .Net errors. But (so far) the program still functions. I'm not sure if I need to worry about these errors. I plan to keep testing and see what errors I get. Depending on the issues, I may still call tech support.
  20. Try re-loading your page. erc explained it here: My link I did that and I see the new photo!
  21. Thanks Mike. I'm glad to know the process can run smoothly and that there are no inherent problems with the program. It sounds like the problems I'm having are specific to this installation. I'll triple check that no other programs are running during installation (not even things in the background that I usually don't think about). At least I only have to worry about the 1040s. I had a couple of 1041s but they were for descendants and were closed in 2009. So nothing that needs to rollover there. I keep getting the same errors. I've tried to roll over the file I'm working on to 2010 just to test there, too. (Even though the 2009 is not completely fixed yet.) Just trying to move on with my testing. Now my 2010 won't update anymore. Not from the updater in the task bar or from the program. I had already run the "fix" they e-mailed us & I thought it was working. But now the updater won't even start (I get a Windows error and it offers to look for a solution). I do have version 6 loaded, so I went ahead with my testing. The file I rolled over doesn't seem to have much in it. No Schedules Cs (there had been 2), no assets (there had been around 60). I'm also getting a Microsoft.Net error message. I think something major got corrupted somewhere. I've run Advanced System Care and it found a few things. I'm now backing up my whole TaxPrep folder. I'm not sure which are the most important folders are needed. (When I tried to check out the user manual, the program couldn't connect to that location!) Next step is to uninstall everything and start over with nice clean installs. I haven't done any "real" files yet, and only a few "test" files. Since TRX doesn't list any Sunday hours, I hope they will be open tomorrow on the MLK Day holiday. I think I'll also download the 2009 program again. The one I'm using is the one I downloaded last April. Maybe there have been some "fixes" since then. [EDIT -- I found the manual and it does list Sunday hours. I'll call later today after my backup finishes and I run some errands.] And I had promised myself I would get an earlier start this year. That's what I get for letting myself procrastinate again. Thanks again.
  22. Has anyone else encountered these errors? I know I should call Tech Support, but they'll just want to take over my computer to look around and fix. I've had problems with this before & I would prefer to keep my clients' files confidential. I've started converting my '09 files from ATX to TaxWorks. I figured I'd start with my big ugly file that has a little of (almost) everything in it. When I'm trying to fix conversion errors in the depreciation section, I keep getting these error messages. Sometimes it's when I go to "Peek" sometimes while just typing data. Once I got some kind of message about the need to update all assets recognizing non-conforming states and re-depreciate. But the ones I get most are: This application has encountered an error Application C:\TaxPrep\TY09\Bin\TW09AM.DLL Error: 9 (Subscript out of range) Module clsAM.cls Procedure: Function ShowIt Line 600 Error Number = 0 User = Kea Product = TRXPro 1040 2009 and TW 09 RPTA Run Time error '13' Type mismatch Application C:\TaxPrep\TY09\Bin\TW09RPTA.DLL Error: 440 (Automation Error) Module cls rpts.cls Procedure: Function ShowIt Line 80 Error Number = 440 User = Kea Product = TRXPro 1040 2009 And then Could not merge output. Either the client's file is corrupt or the Feder DLL is not registered. Try registering all DLLs. Could not open merged input file 1779 from 09. How do you register all DLLs? Does it sound like I should just re-install everything? Thanks!

    Latest Update

At first I agreed that it was Winnie who said "Oh bother." Then when KC mentioned Eeyore, I could hear that voice in my head, too. So I Googled it. Urban Dictionary gives credit to Pooh. Someone discussed it on Yahoo asking if Eeyore ever said it, too. Most responders said "no." So I have nothing definitive that Eeyore never said it. It is, however, primarily attributed to Pooh. Can you tell I don't have any clients yet? I have too much time on my hands! (I know it won't last and I'm enjoying it for another week or so.)
  24. I'm in Texas, but in the city. And since I've never had to do anything with employees, I tend to only know a few of the basics. I love this board because with so many people there is (almost) always someone who has experience in each area that comes up.
  25. Cool. Thanks so much for the reference. I had been worried about the 2010 W-2. This is great. Now the client only has to adjust the Box 1. I was afraid that if we added back the FICA she paid that would screw up the Boxes 3 & 5. Thanks again & welcome back.
