  1. You know I'll be there! Cheers!
  2. It would be a wonderful thing if we could get compensated for being the gatekeepers, wouldn't it? Just think of it. ChaChing!
  3. Thanks! I posted this on my FB page, too.
  4. I have a few who won't pay until next year, but I'm slowly firing them. I really do hate begging to be paid. Once, when working for a small tax and accounting office, I had taken over the bookkeeping for a mechanic's business. I asked him where his "accounts receivable" info was. He said he didn't know what that was. So, I told him that was the account with details on clients who owed them money. He looked at me like I didn't have a head on my shoulders. Then he said, "Nobody owes me money. If they don't pay me when the work is done, well... I have their CAR!" So, if a client can't afford to get their taxes done, I do hold payments until their refund is deposited. But, I AM holding payments. That way, I have very few outstanding.

    Form 8283

I couldn't buy the amount of clothing my clients give away every year. And if my "Misc Household" stuff was worth what they are claiming, I'd KEEP it. Oh how I wish this was gone. Love the "H8 8283 Club!"
  6. I think this got "thought up" one day when Rita took a 10 minute break from the site. I'll be there!
  7. It's the little things that bring a tear, right? LOVE it. I have 2 retired military officers who bring huge files, lots of paper, and spreadsheets that bring that joyful tear. I go in alone, and come out refreshed... just like a shower. Ahhhhhh......
  8. There are so many easy telephone aps now, mileage is easy to keep. And with Uber, you check in to work, check out when off. They clock your miles for you. Oh well, worse overstatements have happened, I'm sure. The driver who LOST money every single year in my office was a courier. He picked up medical items from one place to another and literally drove all day. Reduced by commuting miles, they still lost money. But hey, he was retired and he enjoyed "working" at something, whatever the cost. He used his beater car for this gig and enjoyed it.
  9. And, for those who want to know, if someone pukes in an Uber, they are hit with a $200 fine immediately, before they sober up! I didn't learn that by accident... my client told me.
  10. All my Uber drivers make money. They bring statements reflecting mileage, and those statements come from Uber, so I know they are not overstated. We take deductions for airport fees, tolls, a portion of their cell phones, and car washes. They still make money.
  11. Yes, when her name was on it, and he is the one who used it, I knew I had a problem. Then, when I got to "page 3" of their package and saw that 1098T with the love letter saying he didn't even complete the classes, that was it. Thank you for steering me to the documentation backing up the position.
  12. That's interesting! I didn't even think of the rollover. I will ask them, but she already said they put money back into that same account. He borrowed from it and blew it, I think. Thanks for the teaching moment!
  13. I have a 1099Q in the wife's name. Box 1 distributions are $5000. Earnings in box 2 are $2018, and Basis in box 3 is $2982. There's a lovely note here saying her husband "pulled money from here to pay his college tuition. When the college funds were reimbursed, we put all the money back into the 529." Wait, there's more... This is followed by a 1098T in the husband's name. Box 2, amounts billed was $2440. Scholarships or grants is $1900. Wait for it, there's more... There's another lovely note attached saying, "(husband) paid for 1 semester of schooling. He didn't complete the semester, so 80% of the funds were returned." It looks to me like he doesn't qualify for any education credit. Billed tuition minus scholarships is only $540. If 80% was reimbursed, he only paid $108 for classes he didn't even complete. So, no education credit. It's obvious he didn't use $5000 that he took out of her account for education. As I see it, $2018 goes on L 21 and $202 on L 59 for the 10% penalty. I think her notes were just an attempt to blow this off all together. Can I get a discussion or confirmation? Am I right?
  14. And you're searching because....... Consider the source and carry on!
  15. My client was new to me when it happened. He had over $200k in losses, even after my adjustment. He had been doing it himself and double-hit a figure on year, sending the losses in to 6 figures. I don't recall the exact numbers, but mine was sure not to lift an eyebrow. It reduced his losses which were still unimaginable. That was about 8 years ago. Never a mention from the IRS.
  16. That happened to me, exactly as you said. I didn't amend anything and never heard from anyone about the change. For what it's worth... It just didn't make sense to back up the truck when it didn't matter. Kind of like "Whose line is it, anyway" where the points don't matter.
  17. My assistant and I went for a doubles massage. My neighbor brought us a little bottle of champagne, so we had some bubbly before going. This gal, Cynthia, has become like a daughter to me. With no job and no plans for a career, I took her under my wing last year. She was even better this year. I'm helping her study for her EA (even though I have no plans for my own) so she can plan her future in taxes. Personally, this has been the most peaceful, joy-filled, and productive tax season in my life. Thank you for all your assistance, all your laughs, and for being my extended office. This is my safe place, right here. What a difference this site makes in my business and my spirit. Saturday, I begin HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS. Yes, 62 this month, and I'm finally able to fulfill a dream of mine. I am going to a Christian camp so that if I fall off the horse and "wake up dead," they know how to pray me UP! AMEN? I'm a very blessed woman! Thanks, and God Bless y'all.
  18. I never found out how they knew, but they were wrong. He had not claimed himself. They faced signature pages to my office for him to sign and return. The VA return was wrong, so I walked the preparer through it. TaDAY. This has been my best text season ever. I have this website, Rita, and a great assistant who handles all my problem clients with kid gloves! I am counting my blessings tonight! And I’m not talking about the number of returns or the dollars coming in. I’m talking about a peaceful, joyful spirit! That’s all that matters to me.
  19. She must have! Oh well, I’m not saying a word. LOL
  20. I wish I had Rita's meme of the guy spitting his water.... I took a new client years ago who has a foreign bank account in Norway. I check the boxes on the Sch B and we do the FBAR together every year. She had her ducks together, I followed the now retired CPA's return when I took her on, did some research myself to help with the FBAR, and life was copasetic. Last year, she and her sister sold the cottage in Norway and I included that income on her tax return. Her intention at that time was to close the foreign account and bring that money here. Great. No more FBAR (which scares me to death....) Today, I called to tell her I wrapped up her tax return, and needed to know if she still had that foreign account. Yes, and her "little pension" is still going into it. "But it's ok, I pay taxes in Norway on that income, and it stays in Norway." OMAFB (Oh my aching frigging back) Wasn't I supposed to include this as income all these years? And claim foreign taxes paid? I threw up in my mouth a little bit today.
  21. Talk about "forgiven!"
  22. Wow, maybe she's BAAAAACK! Won't she get the same response if she files paper? Still, that seems like the only option. File and pay, then carry your risen self to the SS office and scream "HALLELUJAH!"
  23. My floaters came on suddenly, and so many it was like pepper was all over the monitor. But I googled it, and it said nothing about being serious. A few floaters are normal, but if it's really peppering your vision, if you see lights dashing, see a doctor. You could have a retinal tear or a hole. If it looks like a window shade is lowering in your eye, go to the emergency room, your retina is likely detaching.
  24. Your symptoms are not the same as mine, and I don't mean to scare you. I was just saying that I didn't think it was anything and it was something. Everything went well after a few laser treatments. My eyes are perfect.
  25. A couple of year ago, I had floaters during tax season and let it go. When I started seeing darting lights in the outside edge of my vision, I saw a specialist. Turns out, I had a tear in my retina with 2 more coming, and 2 holes in the other retina. I hope you will see an ophthalmologist. Or a retina specialist.
