  1. Oh, they like to have their cake and eat it, too. I just had a lady upset about owing $1007 on the sale of a rental property: “Well, I don’t know if it was worth it to rent it out.” Me: What did you make in rent over the years? Ladyl: $31,000. Oh, OOOOOHHHH. (Little grin.)
  2. I believe you are spot on.
  3. I get it. That's why you made A's in my Algebra class.
  4. What are you trying to say??? That I only have 3.14159265359% honest clients? That I have been dishonest about this??? That I have inflated the number? Hey, I kept a log.
  5. I started to say that, too. What were they thinking????
  6. 3.223%
  7. The e-File Manager does not have twice as many files for us hicks in TN. What is this "just merge" you speak of? Huh? Spill it.
  8. Yes. Yes, it is. I was at home again and couldn't delete my stupid answer. Don't know why.
  9. I love your honestly. I had one last year where I just didn't create the e-file. Thankfully, it was a refund, the client called me, I confessed to screwing up, and we lived happily ever after. No idea what happened, but, hey, today is only Tuesday, and I'm 95% done with this week already. It's a total PITA when you've got 344 in e-File Manager and 345 in Return Manager. The new thing speeds up the search. Not enough, but we're headed in the right direction. And forgetting to file is worse. Just FYI.
  10. Alright, no, I don't understand, I'm pretty sure. I'm not getting enough ZZZZZ's, but why is shipping cattle a LT capital gain? I'll be honest, when I can't get farmers to keep up with whether Bessy was purchased or raised, I just keep depreciating all the purchased Bessies, and put all sales on the line for "raised". It works out in the end. To the extent farming income / loss ever works out. Cause you know they are deducting feed for the Bessies in the freezer and stuff like that.
  11. Publication 529 says you can deduct: "Legal fees related to producing or collecting taxable income or getting tax advice." http://www.irs.gov/publications/p529/ar02.html I usually try to print something for my client from someone besides the IRS, too. Hope these help: http://www.divorcenet.com/states/nationwide/legal_fees_what_is_deductible http://www.walzermelcher.com/tax.html
  12. I can't charge what they charge because I can't turn returns around like they do. Plus, I like the way I conduct business, and I also like that people cannot say I overcharge. People leave them for that. Many of them come to me. And they stay.
  13. I could get back to Jan 3, 1978: http://www.google.com/finance/historical?cid=10501&startdate=Jan%201%2C%201975&enddate=Dec%2031%2C%201980&ei=HqELU9j0FeOmsQep9AE&start=750&num=30 If that doesn't cut it, I'd use it anyway. Just saying.
  14. It's aggravating that you click "IRA deduction" and go to the "Summary", not the "Contribution" worksheet. Yes, it has always been this way. Yes, there are worse problems. Carry on.
  15. I had three Facebook friends, you know, the friends you never see, picking my brain thru personal messages in January. I guess they prepare their own returns. I sent them all links to the form instructions or "about taxes" or something. Didn't even comment. They got it, I suppose. So rude. I hate that. And, no, I did not miss an opportunity for a new client. I don't want that client.
  16. I can't get past wondering why there was a need for a Form 2210 for a person with only a W-2. I guess we can figure that out, too. Cha. Ching.
  17. Well, you don't say. I love it, too. Not as quick as having a column, but I can click on names with the best of them. It's better than nothing.
  18. Dear Lord YES. I have said this 100 times. Last week alone.
  19. Yep. Every year my client says she changed her last name back to her maiden name, and every year I just smile and say, "Ok," and then file it with her married name.
  20. Yeah, I didn't like that, either. Actually, I thought a refund was in order as well. We would eat our mistakes; it's the right thing to do. "Oh, they would be bankrupt." So would we.
  21. I am satisfied with 2013, and happy I renewed. I've done 123 personal returns, a few with states. Not done any business returns yet. Not HAPPY about backups being hard to locate and impossible to associate with the client, but I do external backups, so I don't think I'll have a problem.
  22. I would try to get them to guess at FAFSA (using last year's return if appropriate, that's how I do my own) and THEY correct FAFSA later. But, if they insist on filing an incorrect return and amending it later, I guess I just made more money. Yeah, I have one client that drives me nuts with the FAFSA. Every. Year.
  23. I got a kick out of the guy who just dropped off. He said, "I just want to say I really want to break even this year." I starting writing and said, "OK, let me write that down, Tom wants to break even, got it." He got it. Laughter is good for the soul.
  24. I hear ya, but sadly, there are a lot of people out there getting refundable credits, so you never know when things will change and having zero taxable income will be subsidized for grad students. If we can give refundable credits for having children, or low income, or being good at underreporting income, we can give credits for textbooks or having student loans. Nothing would surprise me now. He was just playing it safe.
