  1. Yes, Daylight Wasting Time is the absolute worst. And that statement is a good example of "Off Topic," but it needed to be said.
  2. I agree. I don't even think about the other forums most of the time. I don't care about having any more compartments to deal with, either. I can scan and ignore with the best of em. What worries me most is people answering tax questions that they didn't read carefully. Assuming facts that weren't given. Going off into left field with the 1,345 possibilities if it's a Tuesday and there's a full moon. Kinda like I'm doing now.
  3. That is a great point! Also, you'll know someone is gone when he doesn't show up. If you want to know why he left, just call him and ask. It might be viewed as good customer service.
  4. Agree! I always attach the depreciation schedule to the client copy of the return. Some might say, "Don't do that, you want the client to have a reason to contact you if they are leaving," presumably so you can persuade them to stay. Ain't nobody got time for that. Don't bust somebody's chops in an effort to make them stay or punish them for leaving. The Golden Rule is still classy.
  5. I would say the odds are about 100%. Bet he didn't issue 1099-Misc forms to subs and cheats at cards, too.
  6. I'm going to respectfully disagree with this statement. Unless NECPA is an employee under the direction of a someone telling her how to do her job, I think she can decline any engagement for any reason. As a business owner, I have decided not to prepare the returns of people just because I had a "feeling" they were hiding income. I judged them. Now, it would be different if I refused to treat somebody who was bleeding to death. The persons simply went elsewhere. I am not making this post with a mean spirit, and hope it is not taken that way, but people running businesses still have some freedom here. I think.
  7. I thought the original question was fine. Just sayin.
  8. It's always great when solid citizens get EIC. I wouldn't want to help the guy, either. The parents, yeah. I guess you have to decide if you can stand it in order to take a weight off the parents. Tough call.
  9. Has this been successful in getting a better discount than the 10% off offer they make early, or the $200 off that expired 10/15? Here are links to threads that may help answer your original question: '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>

Yep, I thought about that, too, Margaret. If the discount next week is more than $200, I'll be a little bummed, too.

    Renewal ATX

For ATX MAX: 1329.00 + 69.00 ("processing") + Sales Tax There is a $200 discount offer not included above that expires today. You have to pay processing and tax today, and the $1129.00 balance 12/10/14.
  12. How do you liven up an accountant's party? Invite an undertaker.
  13. I had fun yesterday.
  14. We will if you get out of the whey.
  15. I herd that...
  16. Nah, he just tries to milk every little problem cause he has udderly nothing else to do. We have already mooved on.
  17. I renewed today because of the discount. Was happy, happy, happy. Then, my neighbor called, and said my cows were in his yard. Well, your horse is in my field, so there. You know, things can dampen the moo-d.
  18. If your single client donated $12,000 to church and you see the receipt, but they tell you to take the standard deduction, is that an option? Can they chose to pay more tax than they have to because they are afraid of being audited, or because they think that's what "don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing" means, or whatever reason they have? Or do you have to send them packing because you know they have that deduction?
  19. I would say that is correct. Do you think it's optional to use the NOL under other circumstances? Cause I've not been able to find anything on that, and I think that's all Naveen wanted to know. I got us off on a rabbit trail of sorts.
  20. Wow, you are correct, it's complicated. He has done something that is forbidden, and I don't know that there are any instructions to cover what to do after instructions are not followed. The logical assumption would be that nobody would get to this point. I'm thinking he takes the $49k out of the second ROTH 401(k) like it never even happened. Could it be that easy? Probably not. I'm looking... Anybody else?
  21. I agree it would be foolish not to take the NOL, taxwise. Well, unless not using it caused the client to receive EIC, which is another can of worms. But even if the bank understands the 2013 return with the NOL on it, I'm not sure a person with no taxable income for 2009, 2010, 2011 and a big loss in 2012 is going to have much success at getting a loan. Of course, if all the bank wants to see is 2013 and 2014, and the person really needs a loan, I can see why the taxpayer doesn't want to use the NOL. No explaining past income or lack of same.
  22. Some of y'all have smarter bankers than we do here. I'm not saying anything, just saying.
  23. I have been there, buddy. I am overwhelmed with whiny-crybaby-you've-only-had-nine-and-a-half-months-to-do-this clients, so this may or may not help. I did a search, and I believe the 3rd column, p. 35 will help. Yes, a military reservist can use actual lodging expenses, but if the expenses are taken as an adjustment on 1040, p1, you are limited to the per diem amount and any excess expense goes on Sch A. At least I think that's what I'm reading. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p463.pdf You know those clients who call you 30 minutes after you print their return to tell you something? It's ok to kill those clients.
  24. From Instructions for Form 1099-Misc: http://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1099msc/ar02.html#d0e900 Self-employment tax. Generally, amounts reportable in box 7 are subject to self-employment tax. If payments to individuals are not subject to this tax and are not reportable elsewhere on Form 1099-MISC, report the payments in box 3. However, report section 530 (of the Revenue Act of 1978) worker payments in box 7. Examples. The following are some examples of payments to be reported in box 7. Professional service fees, such as fees to attorneys (including corporations), accountants, architects, contractors, engineers, etc. Fees paid by one professional to another, such as fee-splitting or referral fees.
  25. But at least Columbus Day is Saturday thru Tuesday this year.
