I'm going with "no" on this one. It was my situation for six years, and I think I had my head around it. "If a TP files MFS and his or her spouse itemizes, the TP's standard deduction is zero. BUT a TP filing HOH can claim the [normal] standard deduction if his or her spouse itemizes." I think that's correct. Plus I'm quoting from 2015 TheTaxBook Deluxe Edition 3-11.

Can I just say, I almost cried last night when I thought I had this couple wrapped up? I waited for THREE WEEKS for them to get me summary of expenses and payments for tuition and fees. I look at his W-2s and there are three more states to do. (And can we just line up people who use six point font and shoot them?) My point about AL, and I do have one, is AL wants everything on that Drivers License to efile? (Ok, not height and weight.) I considered calling the taxpayers for about three seconds, then I said, "To %#&& with that idea, paper file here we come."

My guy who has two kids and filled out his W-4 as Married and six exemptions? Possi explained to me what he thought. He thought it meant Married and making six figures. And my guy who owes 3K on 2015, just called and said he was using the 1040-ES vouchers I gave him. Uh, you do know that the 2016 1040-ES Vouchers that say, "2016 Form 1040-ES Estimated Payment Voucher" mean, well, "Use me to estimate and pay your taxes for 2016," right? No. No, he did not know that.

I had to smile just now. The return I just did has this little elderly lady getting back what was withheld on her retirement distribution. I could tell that was going to happen when she came in, but she did NOT want to give up that 1099-R. "But they already held out the taxes." I thought I was gonna have to write $1,000 on a slip of paper and slide it across my desk at her and say, "Hey, here's what I can get you if you hand over that form." But, I just wrenched it out of her hand cause I didn't have time to do that.

It doesn't work there. I tried it on one Monday. Unless I have completely forgotten what happened Monday, which is entirely possible.

Agree, the repayment is on Line 46 and total tax is on 47. Ed credits below them. Line 55 total credits gets subtracted from 47. That's as scientific as I can muster right now.

Well, I want to see what y'all think IRS would do to him first. You know, there is a time for everything. A time to embrace, a time to refrain from embracing, a time to die. You know, I like how Ecclesiastes lays it out. Patience is a virtue and all that.

In related news (sorta), during our six year separation, my now ex-husband filed as Single and set world land speed records filing early in the season. I filed much later, HOH, and itemized. If someone turned him in (not naming any names), I assume that IRS would say, "Oh, too bad, so sad, your SD is zero pay up," because he used fraudulent, perjurious, incorrect filing status. But I have wondered about the first to file thing. Not with him, but with non-lying liar holes who don't lie about their filing status.

The ID number and address of the payer is not required when you use the 1099-Int worksheet. If you wanted to, you could enter SSN right after name of payer.

Only if Bernie gets in. No, I did not just say that.

I agree with you, it's irrelevant.

This applies to so much of my life. But it's not wasted time if you enjoy wasting it. And I don't know how smart it is sending an email when they KNOW we are not renewing before April 15, and it's going to get lost in the long line of emails. Probably those sending them out are just doing a job and don't care if they get any results.

My third child is 23 today and made ME fried baloney, egg, cheese sandwich for breakfast. With mayo. He is thankful for his life.

I love the sound of a good smack down on April 7.

Me, too! I will sign for both of us! How many hours you want?

Thanks, everybody, that was truly a team effort. This guy knows nothing about what he bought here. He was completely thrown off when I told him he'll have to pay taxes on withdrawals. He has been preparing his own returns, too, and it cost him $2,400 in 2014. Will amend and slap him over the head with it. He's bringing in 2012 pronto. 2013 whenever he has time. I predict he will have time very soon.
-
Seriously!! This is going to kill him, and it's the first year I've done the return, also the first year he's married. Congratulations, I wish your wife didn't have "an issue" so you need to file separately. She may get healed of the issue when I tell him what he owes.

I'm getting $842 now. I had an error and it was matching the 2,600. My fault. Program is not deducting the $2,600 as in your calculation up there, Bill. Traditional IRA phases out if no active participation?
-
Yes, you are correct, how about $28,050? Clearly, I'm not thinking exactly right at the moment. And program is saying match is $2,600, so I didn't understand the Pub either. Sigh.
-
I did a search, but you know what happened with "SIMPLE". Wages 60,000. Net income from self-employment 30,374, no employees, has contributed $2,600 to SIMPLE IRA and I have been directed to figure the ER match. It's $911, correct? (Match dollar-for-dollar up to 3% of net Sch C income, per page 10 of Publication 560, chapter 3.) My take on this is: He's MFS, so maybe wife is covered by retirement plan at work, otherwise this is nuts, he should just contribute to Traditional IRA, and my life would be easy. But this is my first rodeo, so if you have another idea as to why this is a good idea, please tell me. Obviously, he may be stepping up contributions next year.

It's like the special shoes that are so special, you gotta add em to the special cart to see the special price. The very last thing any of us want today is a renewal notice from software. Or any solicitation. Ok, except cookies, cookie solicitations are ok. Everybody else, get outta my life. Also time to change my greeting: "Hey, this is Rita. Come pick up your #$%^."
-
Translation: "I don't care that you're busy, here's what I want you to do." My favorite.

Ok, I like this. Fair enough. Of course, their situation could change, and they may be required to file in the future. No, of course, they won't know, and we're still having to discuss, discuss, discuss. This is why everybody should have withholdings. Just kidding.
