    Form 2441

Why will the computer use 1K for expense when you have 5K in child care expenses and 2K in DCB?
  2. The grass is green on both sides of my fence!

    Form 2441

Instructions for Form 2441 say you have to have earned income. A loss would prohibit earned income, would it not? "https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i2441/ar01.html#d0e189 And, I'm not with you on the part where if you have 3K in expenses "the computer will correctly use only 1K when calculating the credit". Does your computer know something that mine doesn't?
  4. Well, if by enchiladala you mean adjusted basis after accounting for what has already been depreciated.
  5. Gal who told me her doctor boss provided her health insurance (ok sounds reasonable) just came in with a letter from IRS: “Where’s your Form 8962, you got the PTC, so give your beautiful tax preparer your Form 1095-A and quit being liar." ISTG that’s what the letter says. Pretty much. And you know what'll happen? She'll probably get EVEN MORE PTC...
  6. I like your final word. I think Bob Farmer (not his real name) and I are the only farmers in this town who make money at farming. Heck, we should both have rentals. We'd show em how to make money at that, too.
  7. My guess as to why this occurs here is that HRB is just charging the same rate whether in CA, NY, AL or TN. Incomes and living expenses are not the same everywhere, but they don't care. They can rip off a lot of people here because a lot of people are desperate for refundable credits and don't even bother trying to get a reasonable tax prep fee. Let's face it, it's free money, and they don't care what it costs just lemme have it now. People who earn money are more likely to try to keep it. If we compared how many EIC returns there are here compared to where some of you live, it would tell the tale. My guy I'm talking about in this thread is not one of those refundable credit recipients. He moved here in 2014 and probably came from an area where a chain store was the reasonable fee. Well, now he knows. It's not that way here. I wind up with several every year who try it once and then ask around, "Who does your tax return?" Rita. Rita does my return. You know, that girl that traps possums under her office and takes them to the movie theatre.
  8. I like your hair, JJ.
  9. Crying. "It was like a brick...I will never live this down." Absolutely crying.
  10. My possum really sounds like he has a lot of tools under there. He's building a condo, I think. I caught one two weeks ago, and relocated him/her to a lot in front of our movie theatre. It's a nice lot. My boys roll their eyes and say, "Only mom would take a possum to the movies."
  11. Here's how to take care of skunks: Refer! Refer! Do NOT try to be a hero here. You're the best, too. You all are. Sniff. Sniff.

    Up All Night?

This is hysterical, cause I thought it had to be Yardley CPA because of posts two and three, and I was scratching my head cause Yardley sure is a masculine looking gal.
  13. Yeah, and I'm over here with no initials but purty good at Google and I got a 1900 square foot commercial building with a possum or something under there tearing up creation. Got a trap set, hope I get him today. And there's a tax preparer and a feed store and a golf course here every 2.13 miles. The cost of living is cheap, and if I wanna charge less than you people in those rip off states, it's my prerogative. And y'all don't be fussing, we got a week to go and we're fam. Don't make me cry. P. S. I'm gonna crush the Enrolled Agent exam in 2016.
  14. Does she have a government pension in addition to a rental property and PTC? Seems reasonable. /s
  15. Previous preparer charged $366 for wages, pension, Sch A, Sch E missing the depreciation, South Carolina (also missing the depreciation, of course). Oh, and $11 in interest income. Check. Any price is too much for what this guy got in 2014.
  16. Nor do I. I do enjoy getting clients whose previous preparer overcharged and made mistakes like overlooking depreciation. Win / win. Happy / Happy.
  17. You complete me. "Jello Shots."
  18. I override the software and enter directly on the Form 1040. Others would put $1 in Box 1. My opinion is that it's better to override the software than incorrectly report what's on a form.
  19. Eh, it doesn't work that way in My Town, TN. Even the rich men CPAs charge less than HRB here. I like to compete with everybody. Actually the only preparer in this town that I'd take my taxes to if I were not in this business is a CPA whose rates are right in line with mine.
  20. Mine with "W-2s and a rental property," showed up yesterday. Turns out the rental property is in SC and HRB completely missed the depreciation in 2014. It never occurs to me to ask WHERE rental properties are. Well, it does now. And yeah, one of the "W-2s" was military retirement. Thankfully, all I had told him about price was that I am usually less than HRB. (Always, but I was trying to play it close to the vest.) He wasn't really a shopper, because he was happy with what I said. I think he just knew he paid too much in 2014. When I fix the 2014, I think he'll be a loyal client in the future. And I have never seen so many pages of bull crap unnecessary and meaningless paper in my life as was in his copy of 2014. * The above comments are not intended to bash every HRB preparer, just this one in My Town, TN.

    Up All Night?

I hope that's it. After all, they don't pay us enough to close tabs. Psssshhhh.
  22. I googled "legal separation in CT," and appears to be an option. After a six year divorce, I gotta say, if a TN lawyer said it, I'd research it.
  23. Yeah, I tapped out at the weigh in.
  24. 1) In my case, I found out during the Discovery process. 2) Yes, but I have never seen a legal separation in 22 years of doing taxes. I think it's very uncommon. Publication 17 says you are considered unmarried if on the last day of the year, you are a) unmarried, or b ) Legally separated from your spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree. State law governs whether you are married or legally separated under a divorce or separate maintenance decree.
