  2. I think 4835 is for when you rent your farm and are paid based on how well the tenant does and the tenant files a Sch F. It sounds like nephew is working for Aunt's Sch F endeavor, if the corn and soybean farming is being reported on Aunt's return. Does nephew file Sch F? I may not understand the situation, but somebody should be filing a Sch F. Flat rate rental of farm land belongs on Sch E and the tenant files a Sch F. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4835.pdf
  3. Ah, very good. Sorta like the ole exempt savings bond Interest and education expenses deal.
  4. I am laughing so hard. We finally got there and it was a team effort.
  5. You enter taxable earnings on Line 21.

That is one reason I text people who don't have email, or have email and don't check it. I can forward the question and answer to my email and print. I never answer a client call to my cell phone. Never. I use the cell for my convenience, not theirs.

This guy does not have email. Many of my clients do not. I absolutely prefer email to everything. Even hugging.

You know when you text a client a very simple question and instead of texting back a very simple answer they call and leave a voice mail to call when you get a chance? It's ok to kill those clients.
  9. I actually meant tell me I'm not the only one who wakes up thinking about mistakes I made. I don't drink wine at work, but I may start now. LMAO. And be sure to hide your wine glasses behind the printer.
  10. Four and five digit losses. Sorry, first day of wine per diem. Yes, I woke up this morning realizing this. Tell me I'm not the only one who does this.

Catherine nailed it. Tired or no.
  12. This is the way it should go. Good for you, Deb. And them. Trying to prove a negative (no, you can't do that because a, b, c) is one of the hardest parts of our jobs, in my opinion. I won a hobby skirmish yesterday with a potential new client who had five and six digit losses for years in a photography endeavor. Well, me and a good client handout won it. "I have receipts for all of this." "Yes, Sir, I know you do. It seems like what you lack here is a profit motive..." After the usual back and forth, I told him to go home, read this, and discuss with your wife [who has a large tolerance for losses and a nice salary in a good job] and see if you agree. He came back with his wife and they both said, "Yes, you are right, we can't be taking these losses, you're hired." I didn't know if it was them talking or the wine per diem for a minute there.
  13. Well, everything with that box has changed between 2/15/17 and 3/14/17. But, I looked at the message one time waaayyyy back there, and mine was basically as Pacun said, a commercial for the Marketplace. I never looked at it again.
  14. I'm gonna just tap out at the weigh in and have my wine per diem.
  15. I have been awake since 3:18 am, and I have realized that a nice glass of wine, yes, one, interferes with my sleep, so yes, the only solution is to drink it with my lunch per diem.
  16. Here's my meal per diem, btw:
  17. If that's what they're using, well, regardless of what they're using, explain that "a person's tax home is the city or general vicinity where his or her primary place of business or work is located, regardless of the location of the individual's residence," and ask them if they are traveling away from their tax home. No, they're not.
  18. That was the first year we had color.

If so, he is not worth hugging. Hugging is too good for him...
  20. And Kiplinger is cutting you off!!!!!!! After 48 more last issues.
  21. That was beautiful.
  22. He didn't know why they gave the letter to him? I don't know why they gave the money to him. But if they want to give me $5,000... I don't know who Year Up is but Year Up appears to know what you know. That this is taxable income. Here's a link to Publication 970. I would probably print the applicable part for the client. I don't know why everybody thinks everything is free. Well, yes, actually I do... If they are reimbursing education expenses he had in past years, I would guess somebody has taken tax credits or tuition deduction if they qualified. https://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/ch01.html#en_US_2016_publink1000178003
  23. I used to do that all the time. I'd even put "Form 1040 Line [SD] is higher", Thank you, that's perfect. I'll start doing it again. It won't change anything, but I like it.
  24. There's a lot differences in preparers. There's an EA on one board that charges a $250 "get in the door fee", there are preparers who will charge a wealthy client more than an average earner for the same return. Seems like an asset charge rather than an income tax return charge to me. Or a success charge. Some charge more because they have more overhead. Regardless, the great thing about capitalism is if they are unhappy, they can go elsewhere. They can pay me X for a 1040 plus Sch A, or they can pay me X for a 1040 and a ten minute seminar. Or they can pay someone down the road X + Y for whatever they do. Or they can even pay the guy working out of his pantry X - Z signing as "self-prepared". With a pencil. And sometimes I do a "pull it out of my left ear" method cause I forgot how many times they interrupted me bringing in forms. Or how many times I had to tell them what was missing.
