OMG!! another ??? "donation" for use of real property
RitaB replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
This is like writing off the value of your labor. Ok, let's issue a 1099-Misc for your expense and then here's your Sch C where we'll report that 1099-Misc income. It sometimes clicks when I say that. Sometimes not. You never know with the clicking and the clients. It's a crap shoot. -
Crying here, too. OMG that is the best thing I've read in a long time. This is what we do - damn good returns with no question marks on them. I don't know about the slackers who decide what to do based on audit risk. That's bullshit. But I'm happy to have no question marks.

I had one guy drop off today, and I just looked at him and said, "Hey, you're five days early this year."
-
The old friends, dropping off, KILLED ME LAST WEEK. I sit here nodding and sending subliminal messages: Yes, I love you, yes I want to know every frikkin detail of your life. Can you please tell me every frikkin detail of your life sometime May - December? Monthly would be ok at this point, ISTG. I have 12 weeks to make 75% of my living here. Please stop talking. Why is no one walking in? Who can I text to call me? Nobody, cause the one I would text is frikkin sitting here killing me. KILLING ME. I'm getting up now, walking you to the door, yes I love you. Yes, get outta here for the love of God....

This is my dream today.

Really, people? I don't know if these people haven't heard that we're busy right now, or if they just don't give a crap, but here are the burning questions today: 1) Hey, Rita, we're selling our house (we hope!) for $175,000 and there used to be a law where you didn't have to declare gains on that. Is that still in effect? You mean your personal residence you bought six years ago for $200,000? No, you don't have to declare the gains on that loss. (She didn't even know it was /s ) 2) Hey, Rita, can I deduct the cost of over-the-counter medicines? It wouldn't matter what I said on that one - they can't itemize but she is on top of it for next year, lemme tell you. Look out Johnson & Johnson and Bayer.

And way better than the salesman here who tells everybody their SEER 13 unit probably qualifies for a tax credit, yes sirree. No. No, it doesn't.

I told this client of mine at 589% of poverty level last year that he would not qualify for APTC. But he knew this insurance guy, BBFB (blah, blah, frikkin blah, per Possi). We have an insurance agent here who has figured every single one of my clients' income incorrectly in "helping" them, and every single one has paid back the subsidy. I didn't want my client taking his return to this guy (or someone else) and being told, "OMG, if she had only told you to put $100 in an IRA..." I have a tremendous aversion to criticism. That's the size of it. For your client, a $6,500 contribution to an IRA would get him down to 386%. A $5,000 contribution would get him down to 399%. My client wasn't even close to being in a position where an IRA would help. I didn't want anybody to be confused about that. Plus, I used to be a Math teacher and it bothers me not to see the real number. A lot.
-
Also, lest your client thinks they were "so close," you can point out that the highest number for that % line is 401. I'm guessing line four was 11,770. If so, the household income as percentage of federal poverty line is actually 441%. I had one that was 589%. I overrode the form and printed it for his copy and then restored before filing.

It's Affordable Care Act Hell.

This may come in handy for you, Dave:

I'm getting less and less sympathetic as the years go by, but I do hug my clients who are returning APTC when they whine. Hey, it's wine per diem time!
-
I will present CPEs: "VA Filing Thresholds" and "The Lost Art of Hugging and Other Decedent Issues". We'll deduct everything!
-
Yes, I think you are correct, my friend. VA Adjusted Gross Income is 22,484 and threshold is 23,900. Thank you.

Virginia 760 PY p. 2 Line 19 is not populating with the sum of Columns A and B of Line 18. I have zero in Column A and 605 in Column B (MFJ). I know I'm missing something and hate to override. Anybody?

does anyone have a hobby warning letter for their clients
RitaB replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
Yes. The other sad part is she won't be audited. It's discouraging when you lose income because you do your job correctly. -

Many of the ones I've seen do not have a profit motive. They have the equivalent of a swimming pool. They might as well build a $30,000 swimming pool, charge three kids $30 to swim and say they have a business. They just have to go to Loophole Lefty. -
the program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close
RitaB replied to Oh Baby!'s topic in General Chat
I get it once in a great while, and I just close the dialog box. It's like it never even happened. Well, I guess you didn't need to close too badly. And I always wonder what an expected error is... -
I totally get that, and I have many clients whose returns are not just check that box on line 61. It has been a royal pain. There are worksheets that are used to determine if coverage is "unaffordable," which is Code A. I'm sure you covered it if you read the directions.
-
I am not following you here. There is no exemption for qualifying for exchange coverage and not buying it or signing up to have other taxpayers buy it for you. I will admit I am pretty worn out and I have called it Affordable Care Act hell more than once.
-
It was back in February when I had something similar, and if I recall, in the section for the documents you relied upon, I said something smart like, "For the child living with this taxpayer, I have thus and so, and for the other child, the taxpayer has form 8332." It is impossible, and I bet next year we have to complete an 8867 for every child or the form will change.

Broker needs a hug. That infuriates me. If you have till 4/15 to contribute, you have till 4/15 to undo what you did. OMG. http://fairmark.com/retirement/roth-accounts/contributions-to-roth-accounts/excess-contributions-to-roth-iras/

Agree. My dead people get them. I was dying to say that, too.

I don't even know my own account number. Long story.
