  1. I say this every year. I sure hope I can make it happen next year. The nutty people show up on April 15. These things actually happened to me: Person #1 (carrying folder full of crap): I could probably do this myself... Me: OK, good! Thanks! Person #2: I did my own return and don't know where to mail it. Me: Do you owe or are you getting a refund? Person #2: Well, I don't owe. Persons #3, 4, 5: Say nothing. #3 slids a stimulus package across my desk. It has #4's name on it. Me to #3: Didn't you claim #4 as a dependent? Person #3: Yes. Me: Didn't you call me a month ago and ask about this, and I told you #4 does not qualify for rebate? Person #3: Yes, but we wanted to be sure. (I still have no idea who #5 is.) I hope I am not at my office ever again on April 15...
  2. Talk to the parents, but I would take the deduction for the minors and prepare W-2's and the 941 or 944. Course they may not even have an EIN, either. So, you'll have to get that... I might even take the deduction for the 20 year old; he'll be self-employed, but it might (probably will) save the family $ in the long run. On the other hand, it is April 15, the client may just say forget it this year, don't take the deductions, do it right next year. Charge lots.
  3. Very good suggestion, and I actually do something similar, although I see that I need to pick a date in March. Yes, it has to be explained, but it does get easier. Also, there's always somebody "new" that needs the explanation each year, either they've never "waited this late" or they are new clients. But this year! A great number of my people that are normally ok with extensions are afraid of filing after April 15 this year. Like this client that stormed in on April 12th, not even sure she has given me everything. Just gotta file something to get the "free money." Guess I am letting it get to me. My pastor said in his sermon Sunday, "God doesn't expect us to get everything done." I am thinking about that a lot.
  4. I have had people that always get extensions bringing their stuff in "early". (They think April 12 is early.) I am sick to death of explaining to them that "you will still get the rebate if you file after April 15." I have even been telling them that I am getting an extension myself. One of these called yesterday: "OK, get the extension, and don't work on mine till I have I chance to go back over what I gave you to see if I missed anything." Where is that white towel cause I'm ready to throw it in. It would almost be easier to work around the clock and get 'em done than explaining this over and over.
  5. Ok, looks like I can print from here but not e-file. Sorry, I guess my hope of finding a quicker way caused me to skip right over that part. Will this info rollover to 2008? That alone would make it worthwhile, cause 90% of my extensions are the same year after year after year...
  6. Jack, I am going to have to try this. I am always amazed at how long it takes me to get extensions done. (I have done about 80.) So, do you pull the client' files and just start typing? Then you print and/or e-file the whole bunch? Seems to me all the typing would be a pain. On the other hand, it seems like I am spending a lot of time looking at the screen saying "updating." There's only so much cleaning (yeah, right) one can do while waiting on the return to open.
  7. I have had a lot of trouble when I do a search on this board. I usually don't get anything or way too much. I'm sure it's something I'm doing incorrectly, and hopefully I'll figure it out. Yes, I agree, the amount of info on the old board was awesome; I used it all the time. I have lamented a lot of times over losing that resource! I use these boards, but it's not the same... I hope it's ok to list these on here. I do love this forum, and we'll get there! http://www.quickfinder.com/message_board http://www.thetaxbook.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2 http://www.taxalmanac.org/index.php/Discus...-_Tax_Questions
  8. Oh, it's fine. Just needed toner. Thank goodness I had a cartridge. Also, my #1 printer really did die last week. That was not cool. Murphy's law or something, I guess.
  9. Oh, great, my printer just died.
  10. I don't even drink, and I could slam one back right about now!

    Rejected 7004

Well, that explains a lot. Thank you so much!
  12. On the other hand, some people are top notch. Lady that just picked up gave me a $25 tip and a hug. Awesome!
  13. Many people are self-serving, and it's not just salespeople. I actually had a client call me yesterday planning for 2008. Talked to me for 15 minutes. Ok, it's great that you're thinking ahead, but there's this little thing called April 15... Oh yeh, and an ATX rep called the day before asking if I wanted to renew. I wondered for a moment if it was someone playing a little joke on me.

    Rejected 7004

"EFIN in the return header must be listed in the E-file database and in accepted status." What? Anyone know what this is? Post office is looking better and better...

    E-file 7004

Ok, never mind. KC and Catherine have gotten through to me. Thanks, Ladies! Whew!

    E-Filing 4868's

Thank you, KC. And I think someone else tried to tell me that, but I didn't catch it. Man, that scared me! Reading that red warning after e-filing a bunch of requests. Thank you! Man, I am so tired...

    EFILE - HOLD?

Deb, could you take a look at something I posted earlier? I know everyone is busy, but this is bugging me: Ok, I just now looked at the "e-file info" tab on a 4868, and in red letters ATX says, "This page must be included for any Form 4868 extension you wish to file electronically with the IRS." The form has a blank for date signed. Is ATX wrong up there in red? I have been creating and transmitting all afternoon without completing the e-file info tab stuff. Not yet heard about any acknowledgements... Do we need to get signatures before e-filing extension requests? This seems to be what is indicated, and I have not done it. If we have to get signatures, I'll be going to the post office. No more people, please!

    E-Filing 4868's

So, Booger, does the taxpayer have to sign anything (for us to e-file the 4868)? I am copying from my post on another thread: Ok, I just now looked at the "e-file info" tab on a 4868, and in red letters ATX says, "This page must be included for any Form 4868 extension you wish to file electronically with the IRS." The form has a blank for date signed. Is ATX wrong up there in red? I have been creating and transmitting all afternoon without completing the e-file info tab stuff. Not yet heard about any acknowledgements... Thanks; I am fried. But not a fried booger.

    E-file 7004

Thanks for the info, Catherine. That is good news! I had looked quickly at the tabs at the bottom and saw that I have to input some stuff and was about to just forget about it. I am about whipped right now...

    E-file 7004

I've always mailed 7004's in for my people that need them. Would like to e-file them now if it's not a PITA. For example, does someone (partner/member) have to sign anything before I can e-file the request? Anything to keep them out of my office; I'd rather make a trip to the post office than have them come in. If this has already been discussed, I'm sorry, please forgive me. Thanks!
  22. Well, I DID give them their copies, ("give" being the key word here) so I guess it's their word against mine. How would I prove something like that? I would not put it past them to do that...
  23. Former client, never paid me, comes in today needing copy of returns, per the lawyer. Seems hubby is in some sort of trouble, and needs those copies in the worst way. I remember him well, I did five returns in one year, cause he was "behind" in filing. He PICKED UP the returns, apparently filed them, and actually bothered to come in a few weeks later to tell me he would pay me soon. I tell wife, "No, ma'am, I will not make copies until I get paid the $385 you owe me." She gets huffy, and says, "Are you telling me that you won't make me copies of OUR tax papers?" Me: "No, I am telling you that I gave you YOUR tax papers, you did not pay for MY work, so I am not making copies of my work and giving them to you." "Fine, I will just call IRS and work around it." OK, I know I was a total moron to give them the returns the first time. But I am sitting here amazed that she is actually mad at ME now! Happy Monday!
  24. Hey, that's a good idea. When I figure the monthly payroll deposits, I could also give the members a coupon and check so they can send in a payment. Thanks. (Boy, these people are a lot of work.) I don't sign any checks, so I think Dad really just can't manage money any better than the kids can.
  25. Oops. Sorry, Gene. Actually, now that I think about it, I worked for the government for eight years myself. High school math teacher. Boy, my face is red!
