  1. No, I think I had to hunt for the e-file info form myself, but I am about brain dead, so I'm not sure about that. But it's so odd that ATX doesn't prompt me for anything on IN, and there is not even the option to create it. All the others are there. Thanks for the heads up about "held." Makes sense! Wow, I am sooo tired. Thanks for your help, both of you!
  2. Ok, I'll try that. I've not e-filed four states before. Always only one state and it's a piggyback. I see that the other states (that are not piggyback) wind up in "Held" Do I just hit transmit and that's that? Thanks! --- Rita
  3. Someone that knows about this please take a look at e-file forum. Thanks.
  4. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I added the efile info for IN, but I get nothing for IN when I create. The other states prompted me to add forms, check boxes, whatever, but IN is just not even poking its little head in there anywhere. Any ideas?
  5. Have you updated lately? Maybe duplicate the return or something. I know I have gotten two blue messages, saying "tp has more than $1800 in investment earnings and may need to file 8615" on people who have no investment earnings whatsover. It is irritating, and when I told ATX, I got this: "Well, blue warnings don't prevent e-file." Well, big whoop! That is not the point. It makes me wonder what other little things are screwy, you know? Sorry about the little rant.
  6. I have no experience with whether the stipends are taxable, but here's a link to a currency converter site: http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi
  7. Is their earned income from "work"? Passive income (interest, dividends, rentals, etc.) doesn't count as compensation from work. If you have TheTaxBook, try page 13-9. I think I missed the MAGI up there (it's 159,000), but that's not your issue.
  8. I don't think you'll have a problem at all. At least your clients had the good sense to get out of business before it dragged on for years. Those are the ones I can't figure out! Why is IRS not checking on them? It doesn't appear to me that they notice the same things I do...

    NT Sort Of

LOL! Yeah, I read this thread several times a day for the imaginary food benefit. Now I'll never get anything done.
  10. JohnH and lbbwest - so THAT is why my SS recipients are having to pay tax on SS benefits! The lawyer said they weren't taxable, too. Boy, I have really cheated my clients, plus I have glue balls all over my floor. My chair gets stuck sometimes. And to think, I have done this to myself. Mercy.
  11. I would report the transactions on the return they belong on, and, as I understand it, transactions (that don't belong to an heir) after the DOD are estate transactions. But, since the forms were done incorrectly, you should address them somehow on the personal return. You know, back out the figure with an explanation on the personal so IRS knows what happened. On mine that the lawyer keeps saying, "You don't have to do anything. The estate handled everything..." that's what I'm gonna do. It really bugs me that the attorney charged a big fee to "handle" everything, and did not. The estate number is not on anything. In fact, I had to call him to get it. The clients have everything, and the number is not on any form.
  12. I think I have used scissors on just two sides. Hmm. Can't wait til tomorrow to see what I've been missing. Good night, friends!
  13. I have wondered this for a long time. It seems that NO ONE can open these without tearing them. Apparently, some of my clients have given up cause they just bring them unopened. Even if everything else is out of the envelopes. (Do you hate it when people bring all the forms crammed back into the envelopes?!) And THAT GLUE on either side under the pink "do not return this form to SSA or IRS"! I HAVE to roll that glue off. It's the first thing I do. I have no idea why. Ok, I'm done.
  14. I'm not only a slow typist, I'm a bad one. It's Publication 950, not 590.
  15. Hmm. Was their modified AGI over $160,000? All I can think of. One other thought - not sure if they would qualify for Retirement Savers Credit, but if they do, you want to be able to enter the contributions.
  16. Hi, Kea. I am about to do (only) my second one myself. Lawyer kept telling my client, "You don't have to do anything. The estate handled everything." I got the lawyer on the phone and asked him if HE was doing the 1041. "You don't have to do anything. The estate handled everything." Me: "Are you preparing the 1041?" Lawyer: "No." OK, there's a $7000 debt cancellation, sale of residence, sale of mutual funds... Anyway, I think we might check out Publication 559 and Publication 590. Hopefully, someone with more experience can help us out with more sources.
  17. Not to be disagreeable, but I have some pastors whose HA exceeds their expenses. And, I believe there was a big bruhaha a few years ago because Pastor Rick Warren had something like $80,000 HA and only $20,000 in box 1 of W-2. (I really wish I didn't know that, because his book The Purpose Driven Life is just incredible... Also, the interviews he did with McCain and Obama during the campaign were way better than any of the debates, as far as I am concerned.) Edit: I really am the slowest typist in the history of the world. Mike already made my point.
  18. Good one! Thankfully, the pastor who just brought his stuff today has exemplary records. I don't think he would knowingly do anything dishonest in a million years. It's a pleasure to prepare his returns. He even apologized for being so late, said, "Put me on the bottom of your stack, if you get an extension, that's just fine with me." His return will get done before April 15, or nobody's will.
  19. He also started in on how many miles he drove to Revivals. Me: Is the income from those on your W-2? I don't remember seeing that income written down anywhere...
  20. Pastor wanted to deduct his suits he wears to church. Me: Are they robes or something otherwise not suitable for wear elsewhere? Pastor: Well, no, they're just business suits, but I only wear them to church, not like I'm going to Wal-Mart in them or anything. Guess who I ran into in Wal-Mart after church Sunday? Very nice suit, BTW.
  21. I'm writing that one down. Sweet...

    RRB 1099-R

EDIT: OK, my answer that was up there makes no sense, cause I didn't quote the previous post, and now it has changed. A lot. So, nevermind.
  23. Yes, I think some of mine absolutely think that once they talk to me, they're in there like swimwear. I got one here, that brought me some forms 2/09, some more forms 2/16, and the rest yesterday. Her stuff gets put in the stack with people who brought it all yesterday. On second thought, maybe I'll make a mistake and put her stuff with the Friday people...

    RRB 1099-R

I hate those RR things. All these years, I've just put the tax withheld in box 4 of the input. I have never even noticed the selection thing up there. When I selected the option, and changed the tax from box 4 to box 9, mine doesn't go to 1040 either. I'm sure someone can help us. Remember that song that says, "wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then"?
  25. LOL. I know!! I told one (who called to see if I was busy yet and could she bring it in), "Sure, bring it in! I'm two weeks behind, so don't expect it to be ready tomorrow..." (She's one of those who calls to see how it's coming along, so I wanted to get that in there.) She said, "Hmm. I guess I'll go ahead and bring it in now, cause in two weeks, you might still be behind."
