jasdlm (try saying that three times fast) - I would explain, and yes, waste time researching and printing stuff for him to read, which you have done. If client is still adamant, I would ask him to call IRS from my office. (Yes, I know, it's a crap shoot sometimes, but I believe they'd get this one right.) If he's still being a butt after that (or if IRS actually tells him to go for it), I would give him his documents, tell him no hard feelings, and send him elsewhere. No charge. He will either come back with his tail between his legs, or you won't have to deal with him again. I do believe we have to waste some time occasionally (OK, probably more often than occasionally) to know we've done the right thing.

Agent says that 2004 MFS return CANNOT be amended
RitaB replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
Regarding "Stranger Things" and "IRS Computers" Wifey filed 2006 Return as MFS in Feb 2007 against my recommendation. In March 2007, she realized she made a mistake, and when Hubby was ready to file, I amended her return to add his info. Of course, she was the Taxpayer and he was the Spouse because of this. Next year, when I did their MFJ return, I listed Hubby as Taypayer, Wifey as spouse. Well, guess what? There was big time chaos because IRS computers couldn't find where they filed for 2008 because of the flip flop with the Taxpayer/Spouse designations. So, I'm not so sure that those computers catch everything... But enough about me. I think I like John's idea. I believe it might just be a keeper. -
Good for you, Catherine! Yeah, no golf when the grass breaks when you tee off. (Or whatever you call it). Going to my daughter's regional basketball tournament tonight. My son has a game Saturday night. Tax returns can wait!

Bingo. Good answer as usual, KC. I will add that it should not be any problem to get the property tax records. Just yesterday had a guy in here that was able to run up to the Trustee's office and get more than enough info on the property tax. Took him about 30 minutes to leave my office, get what he needed, and get back to my office.

The last two returns I've worked on have more than one business vehicle. Using SMR on all. Same codes entered in the asset entry. For each of these returns, the description for one of the vehicles is not showing up on 4562, p.2. The mileage figures ARE showing up. Is it me, or is it ATX?

You might also make him aware that half of that SE and all of the income tax would have been withheld from HIS money if he had been paid as an employee. Might make him hate his friends less. LOL. (Subs get it in their minds that ALL that tax was owed by the provider of the job.)

Do you all get that question, "How come you didn't claim Billy? He's only 17..." I REALLY wish they had made the age 19, not 17.

jainen - It was stated in the original post that the 1099 in question was issued to the deceased. It is reported on the deceased's return. I did not comment on other 1099's because the poster only asked about this 1099.

Yes, Happy Birthday, JohnH! Woo-hoo! If I knew how to put a picture up I would do so right here...

I'm no ant (sorry, I couldn't resist), but I believe you are absolutely correct. You will need to show the rollover on the deceased's return. So, did the 1099R issuer mess up on the recipient part? If so, they should correct, but they probably won't. (Trust me.) Not sure what will happen on that end, a letter of explanation may take care of it.

Yay, ATX has updated the form, and all is well. I love that the IRS address is now on the form.
-
I didn't even notice that. Sure enough, that info is missing. I don't think it makes a bit of difference to IRS, but you know we'll get panic calls from clients about that... Oh, wait, it does show the date above the dotted line, so if they just don't cut that off... I printed some yesterday, and the bottom line of codes (SSN, 4 letters in name, etc.) showed up on the next page. So, you think that's something goofy with my printer? Or, is it ATX?

Old Jack and RitaL (Lyon) - Both of you and your families are in my prayers. Hey, we are all friends here, and I for one enjoy learning about the "people" here, not just the taxes. I HATE what you guys are going through, but I am glad to pray for you and with you.

OK, it's official. Tom is my new BFF.

You all are hysterical. And, it's so funny because I know EVERY word is true. Tom, you are a kindred spirit. Love the way you told that! And, yes, this IS getting old, but you are NOT!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! So nice of you! Had a very frustrating day until I saw this thread, and remembered that this is my job, not my life. Got home and my teenage daughter had cooked supper, and my two boys helped her decorate the house and buy a cake! Total surprise! So, the day ended up being fantastic! Remember what matters today, everyone. Have a wonderful day!

That IS interesting, and it's a small world. I have that situation on a return I just finished. If you had not posted this, I'd still be scratching my head, so thank you very much!

Isn't it nice to be appreciated? Good story. Good tip. Here's another tip: Never fry bacon naked. I heard that at a Christian retreat. A woman at my table told that to the sweet gentleman (I think he was a pastor) waiting on our table. He turned about five shades of red. We were all crying, we were laughing so hard.

Make the date on the client letter link to the date on the return so I can change it easily and not spend forever editing that letter. (I like to sneak in some easy returns, and I don't want em thinking I'm sittin here with nothin to do. Plus, people coming in April 13 are gonna wait a while... IF you know what I mean.) I have a few issues with the client letter, actually. Maybe I'll fool with it now and find something I was missing, but it's a real drag.

Had a deep tissue massage this morning. Wow, it hurt. She said my back and neck were a mess. I knew that... Got out Friday and mowed. (I always enjoy that, believe it or not.) My two boys and I did some minor fencing Saturday. Felt good to be outside - bigdadder, you are so right, God's creation is awesome! Daughter came back from a church retreat and signed up for a mission trip. Getting my hair done this afternoon for the first time in a long time. (Yikes) Hope everybody enjoys the peace! I'm just doing payroll tax returns very slowly and not caring! Yay!

Yep. You covered the big mystery in 2.5 lines.

...or mysterious or something? I hear it two or three times a year, most recently today. Guy pulls in, (driving the truck, no less): "Do you have room for one more client?" Me: For 2008? No. But, I can get you an extension. Truck Driver: Do you know anybody who can handle truck driver returns? Me: Yeah, anybody in town. Here's a copy of the yellow pages. TD: Gee, thanks! I've been on the road for a month, and my wife is opening a day care, and we've just not had time to deal with this. OK, what was he doing Jan 1 - Mar 15? And, after hearing about the day care, whew, could there be a worse scenario for whoever got them? Well, maybe a beauty shop...
