  4. Since the company sold the stock to generate withholding there would be no 1099-B issued. He may want to sell some of the stock by 12/31 if there is a loss to at least take advantage of the $3000. taxbilly
  5. Looks like you have a lot of homework to do to prepare for this audit. I would also obtain a retainer from the client upfront before putting in the time. taxbilly
  6. Don't Flirt at the Halloween Party!! A wife got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the Halloween party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed and there was no need for his good time to be spoiled by not going. So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for about an hour, woke without pain and as it was still early, decided go to the party. As her husband didn't know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. So she joined the party and soon spotted her husband in his costume, cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice 'chick' he could and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife went up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his new partner high and dry and devoted his time to her. She let him go as far as he wished, naturally, since he was her husband. After more drinks he finally whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and made passionate love in the back seat. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make up for his outrageous behavior. She was sitting up reading when he came in, so she asked what kindof time he had. 'Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there.' Then she asked, 'Did you dance much?' He replied, I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the spare room and played poker all evening.' 'You must have looked really silly wearing that costume playing poker all night!' she said with unashamed sarcasm. To which the husband replied, 'Actually, I gave my costume to your brother, apparently he had the time of his life."

  10. My mom came to work for me in 1983 after my dad died and was of great help. I had to put her in a nursing home this May (she has dementia and doesn't recognize me) and I miss her smiling face and the help she gave me. She couldn't wait for the season to get started each year because she loved to talk with my clients and they loved talking to her. This season will be different for sure so enjoy your mom while you can. taxbilly

  14. A client just called me and said he got a letter from IBM purporting to do a survey of tax compliance for the IRS. In the envelope was a dollar bill and a promise to pay $25 if the client calls the special number. Sounds like a scam to me. I know IRS contracted with IBM back in 2005 for such a survey that turned out to be a bust but to offer money for info just smells to me. taxbilly

  17. I am doing the Federal 1040 and State NJ1040 tax returns for a client who is a full time resident of NJ. This is my first NJ client. His aunt died and he had to pay NJ a state inheritance tax (there was no federal estate tax liability). I know that I can deduct federal estate tax in respect of a decedent on Schedule A but need to know if the state inheritance tax he paid is also a Schedule A deduction. Thanx, taxbilly
