  1. The day before my clients' appointments I do some homework and print out the filer's info sheet, the dependents sheet and the stimulus payment sheet from the IRS. I also look up the RE taxes paid on the county website for those who won't have enough to itemize. That way I don't have to depend on the client to give me the info. I've only had about 10% of my clients bring me their stimulus letter. taxbilly

  9. One of my clients gave me an unopened envelope from an insurance company. I opened it and found a check for $12,000. Turns out it was his IRA distribution. taxbilly
  10. Wait until the brokerage statements start coming in next week with large capital gain distributions from the mutual funds which had to sell stocks to cover the run on their funds. I can hear it now: "But I never received that money". "Why do I have to pay tax on that?" "I lost money last year." "You must be doing my taxes wrong!" That last sentence causes me to tell them they can take their tax crap (sorry, important tax documents) to HRB down the street where they would be confident in getting it done correctly (at a much higher price). taxbilly
  11. Thanx for the info. taxbilly
  12. I could understand an occasional slipup or "mistake" as they like to call it, but he has been doing this off and on for 16 years. They also explain it away by saying that her tax returns are in order. When pressed she admitted they filed jointly and he has a sole proprietorship but "his business mail goes to his business". I think I'll use this excuse the next time I have an innocent spouse case. taxbilly
  13. Had a client call me this morning at 7AM wanting to know if I received his "tax stuff" that he put through the slot in the door into my office sometime yesterday, Sunday. Wanted to know if I looked it over already and did I have any questions. Like I'm going to drop everything and work on Sunday on his stuff! We will NOT call him back and the tax stuff will be put on the bottom of the pile. taxbilly

The IRS shows 1/7/2009 as the date they released it so I don't know why it's taken ATX so long excpet for the mere fact that there are a ton of forms that we need like yesterday. taxbilly

  21. 1) The exam is not deductible since it qualified her for a new profession. 2) Unless there is something unusual here, realtors usually work for someone who provides a place of business and therefore she would not have an office in home expense. 3) If she keeps a mileage log, cell phone records, receipts for supplies, and did actively try to sell then there should be no problem taking these expenses. taxbilly
