We have a guest wireless network that is separate from our work network, but all our work is done over cables. I don't like the idea of broadcasting sensitive client data out into the parking lot, regardless of how much 'security' I think I have.

I've had good luck with NetGear routers and switches. Had bad luck with an ASUS router. Had to send it back. Make sure it's a gigabit router and dual band is preferred.

You need to make your dog a .0001% partner.

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop on personal property taxes, now that we're expensing everything 2,500 or less. The MD form asks for 'expensed' personal property. Hold on while I find that list. I'm sure it's here somewhere.

I haven't delved deeply into it, but it seems an LLC taxed as a partnership (or S corp) would have a special flat 15% tax rate on the pass thru income. So if you're in the 25% bracket, you'll save money if the cost of filing an entity return doesn't exceed the tax savings. BUT, what about S corp salaries and who would a sole prop add as a partner, etc. etc. The devil is always in the details.

Uh oh! We're getting dangerously close to a politics thread! Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

I would be happy to see the lower tax rates for 'qualified' dividends and capital gains taxes go away. Maybe we could get brokerage 1099s in early February instead of late March, like the good ole days.

State decoupling gains adjustment is automated now

One of my workstations reports the cannot connect error several times a day, but they just press enter and continue. On big returns I do need to close ATX every so often to keep under 1 GB or RAM or it will bog down, but I like to close and reopen and take breaks anyway so this is not a bother. Win8.1 peer-to-peer, SSDs. Gigabit switch and network cards. -
The real remedy for paper cuts is super glue. Works like a charm. Pull the cut wide and put a drop in, the squeeze the cut shut, being careful not to glue your fingers together. Paper cuts hurt because of the air getting to the raw skin. Super glue seals all that up.

Upgrade to windows 8.1 . Seriously, it's my favorite version of windows ever. It will be a sad day when we have to day goodbye. Been using it for 4 years now.

For MD anyway. Has anyone seen this in other states that decoupled? Nice surprise the other day when I disposed of an asset with bonus depreciation. ATX used to just warn you that you needed to enter an adjustment. Now it's automatic and has a nice supporting schedule too. Thanks, ATX! A lot of people having been complaining about ATX and saying they were leaving but I've had a very smooth year with ATX this year and I like the improvements that were made. You know what else is nice? There have hardly been any program updates for about two months. That's great because I always dreaded installing those.

Intelliconnect add-on doesn't even work in the new version of Firefox, but you don't really need the add-on anyway. It might still work in IE if you need it to. The add-on is what's being detected as malware because it uses some toolbar software to 'hijack' your search. Not really a concern. ATX is not alone. My old tax software had 'suspicious' files too.

I've never had this but I'm surprised sole prop's can put any of it on Sch C.

PRS Funds required to open already completed return?
Abby Normal replied to Janitor Bob's topic in General Chat
I think ATX is deliberately driving low margin customers away. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Cut back on support so the people who need a lot of support get pissed off and leave. Nickel and dime PRS people so they either upgrade or leave. It seems to be a pattern. -
I start off telling them that I wish I owed that much [pause] because it would mean I made a ton of money.

And that we know they don't have the time to look at, nor should they.

Marking created extensions in efile center Find 4868 and and check the created box. Then you can mark all and transmit.

I solved all my trust issues by not trusting anyone. So far, so good!

I wish ATX had an automatic extension letter

From Return Manager, go to Tools, Client Communication Manager and start with the Blank template and you can make it as pretty as you want. Save As Extension Letter. -
Customizing 4868 before rolling over extensions Before we rolled over clients who have not come in yet, we customized 4868. In Customize master forms, open 1040, 1040 EF, 4868 and Comparison. On comparison page 2, enter some amount on line 63 Total tax in the Prior Year column (This field will be restored later) Link line 63 prior year to 4868 tab 1 line 4. This will show you prior year's tax if you have the Comparison form as part of the return. You can override this when your doing the 4868 later. We usually round up to the next thousand. On 4868 tab 1 line 7, enter zero. (Otherwise, line 7 will flow to the 1040 as if a payment had been made. 99% of our clients are not making a payment with 4868) On 4868 tab 1, check the box, Lock amounts and carry payment On 4868 E-file Info tab: Check Practitioner PIN Link Taxpayer PIN, Spouse PIN, Spouse ERO entered box to the same fields on 1040 EF Info form. Link Date Signed to 1040 page 2 date in paid preparer section at bottom. 6. Enter your ERO PIN. 7. On Comparison form, restore line 63. 8. Save! This saved us a ton of time efiling extensions.

If by 'back out adjustment' you mean using code B on the same line of the 8949 that shows the sale, then that is exactly the way we handle it. We used to put them on a separate line of the 8949 until we learned about the codes for adjustments.

I wish ATX had an automatic extension letter
Abby Normal replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
You can write your own in ATX. I have several letters from scratch in ATX. Or do you mean as part of a batch process? You're probably in the vast minority of people who print and mail extensions to clients, so I wouldn't expect this to ever happen. -
The condo association owns that one unit? Look up the real estate records on that unit to see how it's titled. If she has no ownership interest in that unit, I would consider any money received as a refund of condo fees. The homeowners association is probably trying to avoid taxes on the rental income by zeroing it out by giving it back to the other unit owners. I don't think that works.

the program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close
Abby Normal replied to Oh Baby!'s topic in General Chat
Both are things you should not do. Business computers should use the High Performance power option with no sleep or hibernation. I close ATX after every large return or two small returns.
