  1. Just an FYI --- There is a newer 'implant" that actually screws onto a stub drilled and mounted into the bone of the jaw --- one client had this done last year at a cost of $9,900 for all preparation, etc. and the apparatus, etc. So they can be expensive. All was fine but complications with an infection added another $1,300 to the procedure. Total time from original tooth needed to finally done and all well --- just over 13 months.
  2. For all those who use or contribute here: Keep enjoying the season! (tax and otherwise)
  3. I will ask the "dumb" question. If she was awarded in November ---- did she actually receive the reward in 2014? The Social Security people I have dealt with were good but NOT FAST -- it typically took a couple of months before the check/deposit was actually received.
  4. In PA --- we have BIG flakes --- we call them politicians ---- Yardley, Box 5 is correct. Here is where the "other" preparer made a mistake ----- Many of the SSA-1099 state something such as you posted, in box 3. Box 3 is to explain where the Social Security money went --- to part-B, etc. and one line states that "paid by check or direct deposit" (which is lower than the box 5 number). The mistake is that the recipient actually received all of the box 5 number, while only the amount shown in box 3 was "paid by check or direct deposit". We in south central PA will send all we can of this ice and snow east to you. Have a GREAT season!
  5. Same premise but my clients LLC did not "dissolve", just never did any real business and what was done was within a few months, all in one year. Setup in 2010, bought store fixtures, stock, not sure they sold anything (still awaiting docs to review); just quit doing business (2 friends with an idea). Just one LLC person still around (my client) and wants to be clear of this. Two people signed LLC Pennsylvania setup forms without knowledge of "how" they really wanted to do LLC --- just thought LLC was easiest way to go. With two signatures - on setup, I believe LLC-1065 is best (how I wish it were LLC-sch. C --- I hate 1065's (don't know them, never advised them, etc., never did one)). Will only have client to sign whatever is done. Other person whereabouts unknown. My client has done all personal taxes, etc. for years involved but without mentioning LLC. I will probably amend 1040 for 2010 but am curious as to will the 2011 and beyond need amending since LLC had no income or expenses -- client willing to "eat" dissolving expenses in/for 2015, so no expense in 2015 either (unless there has to be). AGAIN -- 1065's -- I have never done, so is there a big difference from sch. C and/or corp's (mostly sub S)? My idea is to file 2010 with appropriate numbers (LLC 1065), 2011 onward to now as zero's and dissolve in 2015. ----- Any other/better ideas appreciated. Also, any idea on penalties for not filing, late filing, etc. or is all probably based on any tax owed and due?
  6. Lion, Just curious --- services IN US --- understood BUT would FOR US clients make a difference . I am thinking call centers (as an example) where they may actually do the service outside the US but be doing FOR a US customer, etc.. Thanks in advance.
  7. Just had a client email me the 8879 and state sig forms from 2013. --- they received 2014, printed, signed and scanned back in but sent 2013 ---- Oh well, still GREAT people.
  8. Pub 946 speaks to "tax home" : http://www.irs.gov/publications/p463/ch01.html#en_US_2014_publink100033754 you can look under index for determining tax home. This is basically for whether you can deduct travel and such expenses but may shed some light. NO ---- a mailing address does not define residency. There are many things that can/do such as where you have a vehicle license, voter registration, etc. Here is a link to the PA Income Tax Guide that has a very good description/reference for what might define residency: http://www.revenue.pa.gov/FormsandPublications/FormsforIndividuals/Documents/Personal%20Income%20Tax/dfo-02.pdf Hope this helps. Sorry, forgot page #; page 6 onward for the PIT.
  9. Notice that the "entities" controlling the money (credit card co.; government who has to read it, etc.) along with "legal system" (mandated that a 12 pt. font is the smallest allowed to file brief, etc.) has all deemed "IT MUST BE READABLE". Yet we the "poor practitioners" just have to make do and figure it out. Agreed, if it takes more time to "figure" out pages, and make things understandable (as in figuring out clients "images" instead of clean PDF's). Money talks and we should be listening and charging appropriately for our troubles and extra time. We all try to be "fair" but also need to be realistic -- how much time used to figure out forms (not from what they are, just what they MIGHT read) could we be using to do another clients information sooner ---- or my favorite --- spending a little more time with spouse (contrary to her saying "leave me alone" ----).

    8962 and 1095-a

Form KEEPS primary taxpayer regardless of who form is prepared for.
  11. If you want to go the VITA route, I do not think you need the EFIN and PTIN, etc. (but not sure). Of course those folks are all volunteers and not paid. With your cliental (upcoming) you may fall into that category too. (NOTE: cookies, cake and smiles for helping are still "tax free" - for now).
  12. CCH/ATX took it out per se when they "OFFERED" to have us buy fixed asset manager and needed to have the "tax" program not be quite as functional. Check your dates and you will see ATX started selling then by eliminating some of the previous standard items in the program.
  13. It depends on which team coded which form. Some teams automate the rounding and some do fixed dollars only. ATX apparently does not demand one threshold here. Many of the forms are coded by very different teams -- who reside -- who-knows-where. My pet peeve(s) are when they allow entering just month/day with year auto filling (client sig lines bottom of 1040 but make you input the year on the Practitioner date just a line below. And things like control numbers having a limited entry field allowing certain data (it is a reference field but they restrict). But we all have different preferences.
  14. Just curious???? Who you gonna bill (for correcting or amending, etc. poor client or "health care .gov ??????
  15. Agree that funds are your clients. However I do not agree you simply add then to your clients SS payments. Yes they were SS to his mother but to him they are "income" just as if he had been a beneficiary of a bank account, etc. The net result may work out the same but I do not believe they are SS funds to him.
  16. Take a look here (draft P974 - early Jan 15): http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/p974--dft.pdf My LIMITED understanding is that most of this will survive --- that the hold up is basically because of the SE information section. When that section is completed it will ALL become official and released.
  17. If you wait the whole year, do you not then have the possibility of penalties and interest for NOT paying quarterly. Would you/should you not pay estimated taxes, etc. to cover that possibility?
  18. Here is a decent article from Forbes written by Tony Nitti discussing this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonynitti/2015/02/18/in-last-minute-move-irs-spares-small-employers-big-obamacare-penalties-for-2014/ Today, the IRS issued Notice 2015-17, which provides that if an employer had fewer than 50 employees, they will not be subject to the penalty in 2014 or from January 1 through June 30, 2015. In addition, offending S corporations who reimburse premiums of more than 2% shareholders will not be subject to the penalty before January 1, 2016.
  19. Thanks. First one where I saw the W-2C showing only the corrected information. Any "other" corrected W-2's in the past were always just that --- corrected W-2's simply marked corrected. Overthinking (worrying) -- is worst for my mind than normal thinking ... Thanks again ---- back into easytax land now.
  20. In the original posters case, would it matter if they lied to the marketplace or not? (moral and actual correctness taken out of question) --- because would they NOT then have to pay back all the PTC, so they would be "penalized" anyway.
  21. Correct --- LESS than 3 months. Now if he had insurance even one day in July, then they had coverage for July and it would only be "two months" with no coverage --- which would qualify for an exemption. Of course that also is considering they had coverage immediately on employment in October and not the "first full month following" employment.
  22. Client gave me his w-2C from federal government (military) showing changes from what was originally reported --- he received it from his command. I also requested from him a copy of the original w-2 which he supplied. The original w-2 has all information as expected. The w-2c only has "certain" information --- those dollar amounts as originally reported and the corrected amounts for those items. I have entered both in the ATX W-2 tab, one marked as corrected. The original is needed to show some state withholding, Medicare and some other items that are NOT shown on the w-2c (which shows ONLY changed amounts for that entry (along with original entry too)). I am lost, in ATX I have entered both under the w-2 tab (of course they add up). How should I be putting these into ATX. If I was paper filing, I would simply send both the W-2 (original) and the W-2c (corrected) and show the net amount on the 1040. How is this done when e-filing? Any ideas will be appreciated.
  23. From an email today --- You are receiving this email from the Social Security Administration because you have registered for a my Social Security account, and you may be able to use a new online service that helps people who receive Social Security benefits and Medicare have the information they need to file their tax returns. If you didn’t receive or misplaced your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, you can now use your online my Social Security account to get an instant replacement for tax purposes. You just need to go to www.socialsecurity.gov/signin and log in to your account. Once you log in, select the "Replacement Documents" tab. If you don’t remember your user name and password, we can help you. Just visit the link, select Sign In, and then select whether you forgot your user name, password, or both. After you answer questions to verify your identity, you will be all set. Even if you don’t currently receive monthly benefits, or you receive benefits and don’t need a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we hope you will take advantage of the many services available with your my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Just an FYI as I did not know this --- until now.
  24. Yes, the rte & account number are that is REALLY needed. HOWEVER --- I would like the IRS and subsequently ATX to reguire proper names, etc. It would definitely help if they matched more than numbers here --- could a thief (yes they can do anything but realistically) open multiple accounts under numerous names --- it would make it harder to get unwarranted refunds, etc. Again, when direct deposit first was offered, names, accounts, etc. HAD to MATCH or it was a paper check or possibly a "hold" until contacted. Given the attitude of being "afraid" to offend the IRS (read congress, probably) opened it to less than secure ways. NOW they (congress) want to back-pedal WITHOUT offending anyone (except those big-mean-hearted-criminal-less-than-hard-working-practitioners). fact sharing and RANT over.
  25. This should be standard issue --- at birth and each female should be OBLIGATED to share with any guy she talks to. THINK how many poor guys would be saved from their perceived "understanding" of what was said. Of course, the woman's rules are # 1 --- should any guy understand the rules, the rules will change immediately ...
