  1. Thanks. I had come to that conclusion as well. Looks like QB has a problem with their 940 filing. Glad I always check their work as well as mine.
  2. I have a client that had to pay an employee to quarantine. This is exempt on the 941 plus he gets the amount that he paid back as a credit, as I understand this. But how does this work on 940 taxes? I can't find anything in the instructions for the 940 about COVID at all. It looks to me like if he paid the employee $49,000 for the year plus $1000 for the week she was in quarantine, the wages subject to FUTA would be $7,000 (the maximum) and he would pay $42 in FUTA tax. QuickBooks is figuring the wages as $6000 subject to FUTA, or $36 in FUTA tax as far as I can tell. I don't trust QuickBooks, or any software, to always be right but I am looking for some kind of cite about how this actually works on FUTA taxes. I thought if any of you have already looked, you might be able to refer me to the right source. In the meantime, I will be looking myself. TIA.
  3. I enter the address because I mail the forms to the payee in a window envelope.
  4. So far I have been manually entering, but I have only done really small accounts so far. I would love a solution to this also!
  5. I was thinking about her this weekend with the bombing in Nashville. Glad she is not any closer to Nashville, but was wondering if any of our members were actually in the city?
  6. I will join the chorus of those who miss the musical family at my church. We did have a very small bell choir for Christmas that taped a few songs, and we occasionally have the praise band play outdoors if we do services int he parking lot. But no chancel choir since last March. I think that is just another reason that I dread tax season - band and choir practice were my stress relief during tax season.
  7. I am sorry to hear that you lost your day job - although I think the owner may be sorry too. It sounded like you were working way above your pay grade sometimes.
  8. Agree, Pacun, but is there anyway to time it so your return goes in that .0000006 seconds earlier? Do certain software providers have the inside track? It seems to me like some of the ones that do testing for the IRS might be able to get the return in earlier than smaller firms that have to wait until the actual opening (or at least it used to seem that way.) Does a big firm like HRB get their returns processed before a small firm using ATX? I just don't know - and mostly don't really care because I don't want to get in these kind of contests for who can file first.
  9. I hope everyone had a very MERRY CHRISTMAS! I enjoyed my time "with" family and the time away from the office, and hope that you all did too.
  10. And no matter how quickly he gets his W2, e-filing is not open at the IRS right now, so he can't file. I dunno what happens if he and the baby mama both file so that their returns go in on opening day.
  11. ProSeries has apparently changed the date to Dec. 23 at 2:00 (or I read it wrong the first two times I looked.) Better!
  12. ProSeries is cutting off on Dec. 21. Ridiculous
  13. I use RingCentral. I usually get an email and a text within minutes when I send a fax, and an email quickly when I receive a fax. I don't remember what the service costs offhand, but I have been pleased with it. We just scan anything we don't already have on the computer to be able to fax it. I switched when the last fax machine I had broke, and I have been very pleased.
  14. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
  15. I'm just curious - if you notify the bank as soon as you get the statement, but that isn't soon enough, just how soon do you have to notify them of fraud? And while i would want to deduct this loss, doesn't it have to be done as a casualty and theft loss?
  16. According to the NATP update webinar I was in last week, there will be a lookup site.
  17. One error in what I said - I should not have used Congress and reasoned in the same sentence.
  18. I understand your reasoning, Tom. But the point of the PPP loan was to continue payments to employees so they did not wind up getting the enhanced unemployment benefit. Therefore, the tips were part of what they were getting and counted towards their earnings, and towards the loan forgiveness for their employers. At least, that would be how I would justify it. Congress may have reasoned differently.
  19. If the son had insurance through the marketplace, even though the policy was in his dad's name, then when he filed and claimed himself he needed to report that 1095A on his tax return. The insurance can be allocated anyway that is agreeable to both the son and the father, so you can complete the son's return showing an allocation of 0% since the father's return already shows 100%. At least that is how it worked for me on the one of these I had a few years ago.
  20. In Virginia, this is normal for the real estate not to be re-titled on the death of the spouse. When my mom passed away, all of the real estate held personally was still in joint name with my dad and I don't recall any issues with selling the property. We did not have to deal with any mortgages as they had no debt to speak of. I think mortgage originators are either lazy or just looking for something to question so they can "demonstrate" they are doing their job of checking everything thoroughly.
  21. I should have said 990 is the same as business efile. Brief shut downs only - couple weeks around end of year, sometimes over night or on a weekend for maintenance.
  22. I don't think that the efile system for corporate or 990 returns shuts down, so you should still be able to file the return. The modernized efile system for 1040's is the one that shuts down for a couple of months.
  23. There is no penalty for filing late, and the only penalty is for missing three years in a row, upon which the tax exempt status is revoked. So if you filed 2017 and 2019, I would wait to see if you hear from IRS about 2018.
