So, I'm familiar with inheritances, living trust etc. But this is my first time dealing with a life estate. T/P parent put property into a life estate, he had/has three older kids. One child paid the other two for their interest in the property. My T/P is one who got paid for his interest in the property Would this be a gift and what would the cost be calculated as if it was a gift or is this something else? Thanks

I have 7 and my husband 8. I HATE 8. I think 7 is easier to use. Things I do in one step in 7 takes 2 steps in 8. Unless you have a touch screen or spend a lot of time on a tablet that has icons 8 is a pain in the but so if 10 is just a upgrade from 8 KEEP IT

OLTPRO and ONEDESK are the same software. I have used onedesk for the past three tax years. I did have issues with the program this year more then others. Forget the MFJ/MFS doesn't work unless the couple are both W-2 only no kids and do not itemize deductions. You have to keep a eye on the AMT calculations, be aware it assume Mortgage Interest is NOT qualified. If for example the TP works in one state and lives in another and the W-2 only list the work state you have to enter the home state and make up a EIN other wise the income will not carry to the home state. Things such as this are quarks and once you are aware of them it's a non issue. I renewed with OLTPRO for $399. The program is worth that much, but not a lot more.

I couldn't pass up $399. But I realize I will have to keep a close eye on it. I renewed through OLTpro.

Pricing has always been my problem.

Nope, they have to give me their financial information in order to prepare the return. On the due diligences I check "Business Records". Some people have spreadsheets, others Qbooks and some just numbers written on a piece of paper. I am not a Auditor, it's not my job to do their books and make sure their numbers are the same as mine

I didn't mean to insult anyone, and I am sure there are many very competent HR Block employees. However I still think they OVERcharge. In my area they charge more than the most expensive CPA firms do, and in all likelihood the person preparing the return has a fraction of the tax knowledge that the best CPA in the area does. Point $90 to $135 for 1040EZ no children and EIC. What does that come to? about $270 an hour charge to someone with such little income they qualify for the EIC

YEP, how do you miss something that simple, epically with software that generates a due diligence 8867. I think the preparer overrode the program. My thinking is, if she screwed up such a simple return, what did she do with more complex ones.
-
Nope, he'll be 26 this September. They filled out the Due Diligence which you only do when there is a EIC, so the program recognized he was eligible for the EIC. The TP told me the "lady" was very confused.

lol, I need to start proofreading my post.

What can be more simple the a single person with one W-2 and who did not have health insurance. I looked at his return and HR Block prepared form 8867 but never calculated his EIC. Charged him $100 plus $35 for a advanced refund. His is due $120 from the Fed. and $24 From the State.

I had a T/P that filed three weeks past the deadline for refund and the IRS refused sent a letter stating she failed to file in the three year deadline and would not be receiving her refund

what????????????/ I find it strange that the reseller (onedesk) is charging more then the Original Software for renewal. OR did you not know one-desk is the reseller of OLTpro. The reseller product usually has less features then the original software, so why would anyone want to pay more for less
-
Another very strange thing, if I go to the OLTpro site and log-in I get directed to the OneDesk welcome back screen
-
I just checked the pricing to renew onedesk, it is $479. Oltpro website shows $499. Not much of a savings. BUT I registered on their site a couple years ago and when I hit Renew for 2015 all my information comes up and when I login the renewal price for unlimited cd based is $399. What to think????

I tried to find the PO Box # on the NJ website but couldn't

I have a T/P that got a letter from NJ regarding their NJ EIC. The letter ask them to send copies of birth certificates, SS cards W-2 Stubs, and some other things. Sound VERY strange to me. I gave her the main number to NJ division of taxation but she has not been able to get through, the recording say because of high volume to please call back.

My husband is a contractor and no one has ever offered to pay him more, and the 1099MISC's I see re not making much
-
I agree, there are so many inexpensive payroll companys out there these days, or online with companies like intuit that does everything

My soft spot is for Veterans, I have a couple WWII vets, that have SS and a pension, I don't charge them. Disabled vets the same, unless they have considerable financial means, then I charge a minimum. I also have a soft spot for the elderly on fixed income and will do a 1040, Sch A minimal interest, dividend for $50

1040EZ 50, though if it is the college kid of a client who bring the one or two W-2's to me I'll often knock it down to 25. 1040A $75 1040 with A, and EIC Child tax credit... $125 this year or at least I tried, but usually $100 Sch. D depends on the number of transactions. Sch C depends. Some people get a 1099MISC with $ in box 7 and that's all $25, A business with COG Sold Dep.... $300 - $375 with the 1040 as abouve All the above include NJ state return and usually a NY return as well.
-
Box 7 is the killer, it is subject to SE tax, if it wasn't people would be begging for 1099MISC over W-2
-
I'm seeing more and more people come in with 1099MISC, employers just don't want to pay 1/2 their SS and Med tax and the other payroll taxes. It's all about saving money

Just finished my last return
