  1. Sounds to me more like your candidate just doesn't want a full time commitment.
  2. I'd amend. Then everything will flow.
  3. No, the S corp doesn't pay any health insurance for him or me. I pay out of my pocket for me and take it as an adjustment (schedule c) and his Medicare payment is from his social security. I think the CPA thinks she's doing me a favor......but she has no knowledge of our real finances, and that this adjustment is not of any value.
  4. DH & I own an S corp. It's really his business. He also gets Medicare and every month about $100 from his social security goes directly to cover the Medicare payment. I know he can add this to his wages and then make an adjustment.......but is this necessary? Or just allowable. I don't do business returns......my friend the CPA does our company. She wants me to call the payroll woman and let her know how much DH has paid in......but I'd rather not bother if not necessary. The business is just me and DH and it's really more of a hobby, so he has something to do all day. The income is just a little above expenses. If necessary I'll. do it ....but I don't want to start challenging my friend or making more entries on our personal return. Thanks
  5. If any of you use Chase, or have clients that do: I use Chase Quick Pay....no fee involved Either party....payer or payee...can have an account...to transfer the $$$ in. As long as one party uses Chase...and the other party has an American bank account, it works.
  6. And...be prepared for lots of arguments with the clients.
  7. Thank you for the advice Easytax....I guess we should keep our thoughts to ourselves, especially when lawyers are involved. Personally....I try to avoid "lawyers as clients" because they can be so picky. So...in this situation....the best advice is "you gotta work it out with the X...or pay the tax"
  8. What I am wondering....I do perhaps 2 MA returns a year. And, I have to put in "the data"....which took me a few tries until I got it right. How confusing the IRS will make it for us? As I recall...in MA everyone gets something (from the insurer I think) that has to be entered...with a big long number........ I'm imaging a messy 2015.......with people being oblivious and throwing out "their card". And lots of numbers for us to enter....(fee goes up for this)
  9. I "get it"...but: If the divorce papers said he gets to take care of the loan....and the attorney didn't do the paperwork....why is this NOT the attorney's responsibility? Attorneys can just screw up and walk away? If we "didn't file" a return....wouldn't we be responsible for the consequences (penalties & interest)? (No...I've never called an attorney...but I've heard stories.....) I wonder what Judge Judy would have to say about this...........
  10. But....a phone call to the attorney who "screwed up" costs $0. Why are people so eager to pay?
  11. But, it's a little different....your client had unreported income in a year when they filed jointly. In this case....we don't know the year the 1099-C was issued....or if it was issued after the divorce. Divorce = big mess How come I can find boyfriends from almost 50 years ago....and people cannot find ex-spouses? I'm still pinning it on the lawyer....his error....he gets to fix it!
  12. If the divorce papers said that Mr was responsible....someone knew it was joint. Otherwise....why specify he's responsible. I think the lawyer just overlooked it...after all...don't we all occasionally overlook a 1099-INT etc. Nobody's perfect...human error. I can't believe, with all this social media...that the wife can't find the X. I wonder how much it would cost to hire "a professional".
  13. I don't see this as much of a fight. I'd call "whatever number" at IRS....and explain about "the divorce agreement". Also...whose SS# is first on the loan? The worst thing that could happen is the IRS agent laughs. The agent could also say..."Send in the divorce papers and a letter etc." I'd also keep the attorney informed about this.......and since it's his fault (assuming the facts are correct).....I would discuss his liability. Maybe he has insurance. If the divorce papers say it isn't her responsibility....it isn't her responsibility. And she shouldn't be paying the tax. She could also take her divorce lawyer to small claims court if she does pay and the lawyer doesn't do the right thing.
  14. Perhaps a copy of the divorce papers may help......but I think the lawyer may have some responsibility. It looks like he screwed up.
  15. I know the kind of clients it's going to affect.....those "just getting by". I have a few in their 30s....working at various places....w/o insurance. (The artist types...lots of W-2s & 1099-Miscs....very little income on each) I just did an amended return for 2012 this week. The TP is mid-40s. The spouse is mid-20's. I had to add a Schedule C....so I asked about health insurance, assuming they had it (because they just had a baby in 2013)....and was surprised that they didn't. (Home birth with mid-wife!) With their income...health insurance would compete with eating. I guess we're going to have a lot of learning to do for Tax Season 2015.
  16. I don't think I could ever go back to "working for someone"....just because of the "freedom of time"!
  17. Thanks...but I live a few blocks from the jewelry district in NYC. My "good stuff" is either custom made (hand picked stones and custom settings) or DH bargains with the diamond merchants if I see a piece that I like. I've bought a few things on TV, JTV included....and I'm usually disappointed. They look nicer on TV.
  18. That's not cheap....that's practical. If you don't like or want something....the other options are to throw it out, or give it to charity.
  19. LOL....I should write a book! I don't fight crowds at busy malls.....I go early....before the crowds. But, not for mob scenes. You wouldn't find me at Walmarts on Black Friday. I love jewelry (the real stuff...not the $18 stuff)....and you should see how well I do there. DH helps.....as well as I "value shop".....he's the king of bargaining. If he doesn't get the price down, he thinks he's being taken advantage of. (This is jewelry only....he doesn't go into Macy's and try to bargain on suits!)
  20. This thread has really made me laugh...and shake my head. "Penny wise and pound foolish" comes to mind. I hope nobody takes this the wrong way....but it seems like a lot of work is being put into "saving pennies". Isn't your time worth anything? Although I may not be "the penny wisest" person.....I challenge anyone to a "value shopper" competition. Just yesterday I got a top at Macy's reduced from $44 to $16...and a necklace reduced from $18 to $2. This was because of coupons and timing of the coupons...and being a smart shopper. (LOL...you should see what I save on the "big ticket items!") As a kid I wasn't rich...and had a mother who didn't indulge....so I learned at a very early age how to "stretch a buck" (always amazed my friends). I never focused on "the pennies" because pennies, value wise are insignificant. (You don't buy cheap stuff...it breaks. Then you have nothing. You buy "quality"...but at a discount.) So...I saved $44 yesterday....in perhaps 30 minutes. I can buy a lot of socks and baggies for that $44.
  21. If he's actively trying to expand his business....I'd say NO. I wouldn't hire anyone who had his own business.....you really never know someone's motive.
  22. Although I am not an ATX user, I can appreciate the value of good tech support.....and how frustrating it is to speak to someone who "doesn't understand". And, when they can do a screen share....that's the best!
  23. She's getting letters from her 3 W-2 employers....so really no problem anticipated. She has been taking the tuition as a deduction for a couple of years....never had an issue. The client usually has 10 W-2/1099-Misc total....she gets around. Before I spoke to NYS I was going to suggest "just keep the federal return "as is".....and if contacted by the IRS in the future, we can amend" Oh....NYS is such a pain! As always....thanks for the input
  24. Spoke to state....it seems they now want a letter about "job duties etc" from the school
  25. Well...this is exactly what happened: Client is a music teacher. She went to school for her master's....definitely to improve her skills in a field she is employed in. The school, instead of charging her tuition....gave her a W-2. According to the client, she never saw that money. It went right back to the school. So...it shows up as income.....and I took a Schedule A deduction (yes...I know she can get an adjustment or credit). The IRS didn't challenge this. However, NYS wanted a letter from the school showing "the relationship" between the "wages and tuition". The school wrote some nebulous letter that I couldn't understand...so I'm sure the clerk at NYS didn't understand either....and NYS disallowed the deduction. The state did not question if the tuition was related to her current position...and if it would improve her skills...just proof of payment....and her school's letter was so ambiguous. If she take a credit or adjustment on the Fed return...it won't change the tax the state now wants.
