  5. Does anyone know what prompts to enter to reach an IRS agent the fastest when calling the 1040 hotline. I can't seem to get to an agent on the individual side. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Yes, I usually ask for a voided check so this would not be an issue, but due to time constraints, I had the client read me their account number. Even though I had them read their account number twice, they misread it both times.
  7. Per an IRS release today: The IRS is refunding the fees that return preparers paid for the Registered Tax Return Preparer test. Letters will be mailed to refund recipients on May 28 and checks will be mailed on June 2. Return preparers took the test between November 2011 and January 2013 and paid a fee of $116. About 89,000 tests were paid for and taken, with some preparers taking the test more than once. The refunds are being made because the federal courts determined in Loving v. IRS that the IRS lacked authority to mandate testing. The IRS remains committed to the principle that all persons who prepare federal tax returns for compensation should be required to pass a test of minimal competency and take annual continuing education training. Taxpayers deserve top-quality and ethical service from all tax professionals. As part of this commitment, the IRS launched an interim Annual Filing Season Program in 2014 to promote voluntary continuing education by non-credentialed tax return preparers. The Administration's 2016 budget proposal would provide the IRS with authority to regulate all paid tax return preparers. Oversight of all paid preparers, coupled with diligent enforcement, would promote high-quality services from all tax professionals, improve voluntary compliance and foster confidence in the fairness of the U.S. tax system.
  8. IRS says there is nothing they can do, and that it is a bank issue. Bank of America says there is nothing they can do and that it is an IRS issue. Unreal, how much of a pain this has turned into.
  9. I've had the same problem throughout all tax season. It takes 5-6 attempts before the program will run
  10. The bank should refuse the deposit, but it already accepted it into the incorrect account. Has anyone ever had this happen?
  11. A client had his tax refund directly deposited into an incorrect bank account. Has anyone ever had this happen with their client and how did you go about fixing this? Thanks

  16. Wow! Thanks for the prompt response. This board has been a tremendous help!
  17. I have a client that over funded her 401k. Her employer refunded the excess contributions and earnings this week and said she'd receive a 1099R in January of 2016. Do I include the excess income on her 2014 return or true it up on her 2015 return? No corrected w2 was issued.
  18. Thanks guru! I'll go with what you suggested! Appreciate the help.
  19. This couple only has W2's, so do i just override box 7?
  20. Talked with customer support but to no avail
  21. I have a couple that wants to file separately they live in a community property state. When I complete form 8958 for the income 50/50 split, it does not flow into the 1040. Anyone know if there is a box to check or something else that needs to be done. Currently the 1040 shows the filer's wages at 100% on line 7. Thanks
  22. Thanks Pacun. Do you have a source to cite?
  23. Taxpayer received a 1099-C for cancelled debt. This was her primary residence for 3 of the last 5 years, with the last 2 years it being a rental property. Does this taxpayer still qualify for the qualified discharged of principal residence indebtedness exclusion?
  24. I was surprised to see the rates being what they were http://blogs.wsj.com/totalreturn/2013/01/24/what-tax-preparers-really-charge/
  25. Will each person receive a 1095 form indicating their health insurance coverage? Or is this form only for people who signed up through the market place?
