NT: Starting the post-season right - NOT.
Jack from Ohio replied to Catherine's topic in General Chat
There is only one way to be sure that your credit card information cannot be hacked/stolen/compromised. It is foolproof and dependable. 1. Never use your credit/debit card. 2. When you feel the urge, see #1. -
Uhmmmm This thread is over two years old...

I just sent a client home with her tax information. She was a "gone for two years" retread. I did not miss her, but thought she might be different. (not a chance!!) I increased her fees 30% above my normal. She smiled, wrote the check and said.. "See you next year." I was hoping to discourage her, but apparently whomever she was using treated her badly. Next year, another increase.

He owed all the PTC back that was paid for him. He must have known about the income since it was enough to put him over 400%. He either put erroneous information in the Marketplace, or when he knew he was getting the extra income, failed to update his information. Either way, he owes it all back and unless he can make an IRA contribution to get below 400%. However, even if he makes it down to 300%, he will still have to pay back a substantial portion of the PTC that was paid. Thank our Congress and Whitehouse for his situation. Or, him not paying attention or intentionally trying to "game" the system. It is not surprising to me to see the huge number of taxpayers intentionally gaming or attempting to game the system.

And a substantial increase in fees...

You need to know when to stop preparing

"...it is in process. Now it has been moved to the back/bottom of the work stack. Each time you call, this is what will happen." You may not really do that, but let the client think that you are. -
Seek out the help of a qualified and experienced tax professional. You are in over your head and destined to make errors. Seek out a tax professional.

This is not a tax issue. This is an insurance issue. When this arises, I do not get involved at all. The insurance law is what you are asking to get an exemption from. NOT a TAX LAW. I refuse to be dragged into that world. I did not pass the laws, and I am NOT AN INSURANCE PROFESSIONAL. I want to make sure my clients know these things.

Efile extension AND mail extension with payment
Jack from Ohio replied to BHoffman's topic in General Chat
Too much thought on this issue! Let's put our thinking toward something that will matter... 19 years in this business. ZERO issues for zero balance extensions. Between my clients and the firm, over 8,000 zero balance extensions. The only extension problem arose when the IRS would not accept the green card as proof the extension was mailed and received timely. We lost the battle for not having an electronic confirmation number. -
Efile extension AND mail extension with payment

DITTO! In the past 10 years, probably 3,000 zero extensions. The IRS does not have the willpower, manpower, time or money to chase extensions. -
Efile extension AND mail extension with payment

Zero. Only ones that are mailed in with payment has any numbers. -
Today: Me: Do you want your refund mailed to you in a check, or do you want to have deposited directly into your checking account. Him: Have them send me a check. I do not want to give them by bank account information. Me: OK Him: Don't forget to give me those estimate vouchers for next year. I have to mail them a check by Monday.

The moral of your story is: "As long as you refuse to enter the 21st century with your tax business protocols, you will be fighting, and losing, those battles on a regular basis. Three reasons for e-filing: 1. Accuracy 2. Confirmation 3. Faster processing. Those are in order of importance.

I refer anyone who asks for this assistance to a lawyer experienced in these matters. It is not something a person wants to do on their own. I have a long list of "...I am smart enough to do this without the help of a lawyer..." people that had to come back and say I was right. Between 70-80% of all self filed SSDI claims are denied on the first attempt. I am not a lawyer and choose not to try to practice law in this area.

Efile extension AND mail extension with payment
Jack from Ohio replied to BHoffman's topic in General Chat
Absolutely file the extension electronically AND have the client mail the extension form with payment. How can you know for CERTAIN, that he/she will actually mail the extension on time. In addition, an extension without an electronic verification is worthless, if the issue of whether it was filed or not comes to bear. Even certified mail will not fly if questioned. -
And this has been in the last 3 years? We have lost such an argument with the same proof. That was the day we started e-filing ALL extensions.

You can file another extension with payment. As long as it is postmarked by April 18, it will be considered before the due date. Estimate high. The only downside to sending too much with the additional extension is a larger refund. I efile all extensions. If payment is needed, I have the client mail in a second extension form with payment. Extensions without digital acknowledgment are useless, if a question arises.
