I'd like to suggest that any who agree post to the suggestion box
Jack from Ohio replied to kcjenkins's topic in General Chat
At the firm, we have e-filed over 2,000 returns a year for the past 4 years. In my private practice over 100 each year for 6 years. In all that time, there has never been an issue that required anything to do with DCN numbers. Too much worry over it!! IMHO -
Used vehicle with handicap modifications.
Jack from Ohio replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
I am thinking that it must be full moon!! I need to check the calendar!! You are right. The pubs don't address the modifications. -
What a day today!! Client purchased a used van with all handicap accessories already installed. (wheel chair lift, modified controls, etc) Can the pro-rated costs of the accessories be deducted as medical expense in the same manner as installing them in a new vehicle?

Retired minister. 1099R Box 1 - 38,382 Box 2 - 38,382 No boxes checked. Dist code 7 Minister has provided a worksheet from the Pension Plan administrator verifying that the properly calculated portion of the income is designated as housing allowance. This amount is calculated correctly and is $20,394. The notice from the Pension Plan says to simply change line 16b to reflect the exemption. I am a little hesitant to change the numbers on the 1099R, especially when box 2 is filled in, and the "Taxable amount not determined" box is NOT checked. Any ideas how to exclude this income? Or, must we have the pension plan submit a corrected 1099R with box 2 blank an the "Taxable amount not determined" box checked? Any ideas are certainly welcome at this point.

It is a Windows Quirk. Not to be confused with Quark from Deep Space Nine!! We live with operating systems in which the first step in stopping is to click the Start button!! Need I say more. I have all our associates (some days 10 working at terminals) shut their computers down at lunch and supper breaks. Resets windows system resources, and refreshes network connections to the server. This course of action has reduced the "It did work, now it doesn't" problems by 90%. Ya gotta luv Winders...

Any computer person know what a 'Cisco Switch' is?
Jack from Ohio replied to jasdlm's topic in General Chat
You are correct on both counts. -
Indiana IT-40PNR cannot be e-filed. Problem solved. Paper file only. IT-40RNR is the same. I live and work 12 miles from the Indiana border. All part year forms from Indiana cannot be e-filed. The mention of e-file in the instructions refers to going on their site and doing the return. You have to input all information to do that. Mail it!! Quicker and easier, and they will still do direct deposit.

March 25, 2009 Office staff: Mrs. XXX, your amended 2007 in response to the CP2000 is complete. Do you want to send us a check or pay us with a credit card? Mrs. XXX "I would rather send you a check." (She lives in WA) March 31, 2009 Mrs. XXX: "I haven't received my amended return yet. (due date of April 8) Me: Let me check and see Mrs. XXX. I find the file with the note that she will send a check, still waiting for the check. Me: "Mrs. XXX, we have not yet received your check." Mrs. XXX: "YOU MEAN YOU DID NOT MAIL IT OUT?" (yes, shouting) "THE DUE DATE IS APRIL 8!" "If I had known you were not going to mail it right away, I would have given you a credit card." "Is it normal for you to delay sending information when I have a deadline?" Me: "It is normal that we get payment before releasing your returns." Me: "Mrs. XXX, did you already mail us a check?" Mrs. XXX: "No, my husband said to wait till we received the return before I mail the check." Me: (Trying to be cordial at this point because we pushed her notice ahead of about 50 other people last week) "Mrs. XXX, I will be glad to take your CC information and we can get this out to you." Mrs. XXX "(gives CC info) "I want you to overnight the package to me, no matter what the extra costs." "I cannot believe that you were waiting till you received payment to send the information to me." Me: "We will overnight this to you so you can get it mailed." "Thank You." Our charge for doing the amend (she is a long time client) $50. Some days....

Starting tax year 2008, the IRS will NOT send 1040ES to anyone who has a preparer listed on their return. No notices sent, they just did it. Your IRS process to save your tax dollars!!! :scratch_head:

Things clients do that make you go HUH?
Jack from Ohio replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
I just had to share this one... Current client (single female) asked... "Does being married changed the amount of the First Time Homebuyers Credit?" I responded... "No, the amount of the credit is the same whether you are single or married." Client... "So it would be better if my boyfriend and I bought the house together before we get married in May? I respond... "That will not change the amount of the credit. 10% of the purchase price up to a maximum of $8,000." Client... "So, if we buy the house together.before we get married, can we get TWO credits?" I respond... "No, only one credit per house." Client... "But if we are not married, wouldn't that be TWO households, and then $16,000 credit?" I respond... "No, only one credit per house. If you buy it together, you split the credit." Client... "That doesn't hardly seem fair..." I had to repeat this to her three more times before she actually believed me... -
I totally agree with BulldogTom. I will continue to send 1040X because I have seen too many cases where the IRS only corrects the numbers at hand, and not any other numbers that would change. Even auditors at an audit... This particular audit, the auditor disallowed the claiming of the client's college daughter as dependent (not living with him, no HOH, etc), but when the the final audit report came out, the Lifetime Learning credit for that daughter, was still allowed and included. I will always send the 1040X for a notice requiring a change.

I have started telling all my clients... "You should receive your refund in three weeks." When it gets there sooner, I am a hero. We have been seeing a 1 week delay with no apparent pattern or reason.

At my daytime job here at the firm, we are seeing the IRS changing the amounts and sending a letter explaining.

He is a W-2 employee paid on "flat rate" time. Paycheck weekly. So he is on cash basis. OldJack stated what I had thought. I was just asking to make sure I was on the right track.

I have a Master Auto Technician who purchased a large amount of tools for his Diesel Truck repair job. ($20K) All is financed through the tool dealers. Can I get opinions about whether to deduct (2106) the amount purchased, ($20K) or the amount paid in 2008 ($4,200). I await your experienced answers.

I have used it several times. 1) Complete all the 1065, 1120s, estate, etc, including all information for the K-1s for the particular taxpayer. 2) Close the corporate return. 3) Open the personal return for the K-1 recipients. 4) Under "returns" click on Import K-1 information. 5) You will see a box with a list of all corps that have the taxpayers SS# listed as a K-1 recipient. 6) Choose the appropriate returns to import from and click "Import." 7) Smile as it don't get no easier than that. 8) Every time you open that personal return again, the program will check to see if the corporate return has been changed, and will ask if you want to import the updated information.

I remember this topic mentioned before. I can't find the thread. There was a cite that said as long as the incarcerated dependent was planning to return to the home when released, he/she can still be claimed as a dependent for the entire time of incarceration. I am looking for the cite.

Didn't have to take them out of the cabinet, they were already there... My personal buisness return count is 40% ahead of last year. All the procrastinators seem to have seen the light this year...

I find it hard to believe that all the responders to this thread would stoop to such low forms of humor...

In E-file manager, mark the files that are held that you want to release. Click on e-file in the toolbar and choose "release held files." This will change them to created.
