  1. Funny how the salesman I talked to in May said... I quote... "These early renewal discounts will NOT be offered after May 31, 2009." I bet him a steak dinner at a restaurant of his choice, and he took the bet. He has since welched on paying off. Glad you got the discount. Entirely disgusted with the blatant intentional misleading of customers by the management of CCH. De Ja Vue all over again!!
  2. NO Sharing such information = "Go to Jail. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200" Call a salesperson and pay for the software. They will give you the code you are asking for.
  3. I wonder if they will listen to the hundreds of us that want print order preferences?
  4. Client called as being the victim for over 5 years of a ponzi scheme. It was unearthed in March 2009. I understand that the Rev. Proc. allow the losses to be claimed as theft losses. The client is saying an IRS agent told him that the losses can be carried back up to 5 years and forward up to 20. The agent apparently said the theft losses are being treated just like NOL. I don't read the carryback/carryforward in the Rev. Proc. Am I missing something? The Ponzi scheme was run as a bank offering CDs for investors offering (for 2008 & 2009) 8% return. The "bank" even issued 1099INT for the victims and those incomes were claimed.
  5. <<<Thousands of the preparers who receive these letters will also be visited by IRS Revenue Agents in the coming weeks to discuss their obligations and responsibilities to prepare accurate tax returns.>>> And just where will all the IRS Revenue Agents come from to make these visits? Seems I remember the IRS budget being cut, and it seems they don't have enough employees to take care of what they have to do now... I guess they are counting on the Fear Factor to do their work. The letter about W2s went to everyone last year. My personal practice has 150+ clients, and I got one last year.
  6. Can anyone say De Ja Vue? CCH said all the same things when it acquired ATX. Now it is clear history how that went... Just call me a skeptic, but has anyone heard anything from William (Bill) Trasker who was such a major customer service person extordinare... I'm just sayin....
  7. <<<pops another bag of popcorn, gets some more ice for my root beer, and settles in...>>> When experienced and knowledgeable tax preparers debate an issue, I ALWAYS learn...
  8. Waiting on the devilled eggs to get finished so we can go to the In-laws for Dinner... I have yet to post my position on the said debate. I am just enjoying root beer and popcorn while the debate continues and I learn from all the posts!

  10. I asked this at the end of another thread. There have been references to information indicating that the home purchased to qualify for this credit has to be purchased AFTER Nov. 6, 2009 and before June 2010. I am unable to find the specific info from the IRS to support this. It was my impression that any purchase in 2009 that met all the other requirements could be claimed. First-Time Homebuyer Credit Here is a quote from the title of the news release in the link.... "First-Time Homebuyer Credit Extended to April 30, 2010; Some Current Homeowners Now Also Qualify" Please direct me to the correct answer as this could potentially affect several of our clients.
  11. I have a related question. Where is the reg that says that longtime homebuyers credit is only available for homes purchased AFTER Nov. 6, 2009, and BEFORE Apr. 30, 2010? I think I will start a new topic as well...
  12. Windows will take care of dual monitors WITHOUT any other software. Pacun has it EXACTLY right. Each monitor can have whatever you wish on it. I like current year tax program left, and last year right. Mouse will scroll from one to the other and back easily.
  13. Do you use a cell phone, or receive calls on from a cell phone? You know that Big Brother monitors ALL cell phone calls and screens them for content? If you don't believe me, just watch the movie "Enemy of the State" With Wil Smith and Gene Hackman. Now if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you, and some ocean front property in Arizona REAL CHEAP!
  14. Check out this: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/ My son runs it on his MacBook Pro and seamlessly switches from PC apps to Mac apps.
  15. I am currently building my new computer. Dual processor, 4Gb Ram, 1Tb hard drive, and I am diving in headfirst with Windows 7 PRO 64 bit. Word on the geek street is that the only version of Windows 7 to have is Professional. It has an XP emulator for programs and printers. The price difference is less than a new printer. Complaints already surfacing about printer companies NOT writing drivers for Windows 7. No names mentioned, but one of the companies I keep hearing about has the initials hp. When I get it assembled (probably this weekend) I will load all ATX from 2003 to 2009 and report any hitches or glitches.
  16. Or.... Join the 21st Century and e-file 1099s and Upload W2s. It will soon be 2010! We send 1099s to clients and recipients, and hold e-filing them till a week before deadline. This allows time for "inaccuracies" to be reported. Then changes can be made, new copies sent BEFORE info is sent to the IRS. E-filing 1099s takes about .2 seconds each. It is made VERY SIMPLE in ATX.
  17. My question was NOT about what to file, where, or when. I need information from the IRS about the return that was created by the IRS. Two different hotline agents faxed the 2003 return transcript, and both times it came through blank. Third call netted the information that it was "archived" and had to be purchased by client. Then we got the letter mentioned above. Any Ideas?
  18. This is TOTALLY SPAM and anyone who has clicked on the links should take precautions to see that no malware, spyware or trojans have been downloaded to your system. Since when did Wolters Kluwer Law/Business get into the "virus and junk mail protection services?" This is a no-brainer PHISHING e-mail. Come on folks! Went to a seminar on internet and computer security Wed evening. Do you know that 25% of people that receive Phishing e-mails click on the links. Last year 980,000 people were ripped off due to following phishing e-mails. To the tune of an average of $1,500 per person. THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK!
  19. Does NOT qualify!
  20. Husband filed his 2003 return as MFS. Wife had the substitute form created by the IRS. In order to take advantage of the huge benefit of filing jointly, I will need to amend. Without the information from the substitute form, amend is not possible. Practitioner hotline could not find any information in the system concerning the 2003 substituted return except the final amount owed, and that the return had been "verified."
  21. Client did not file her returns 2003 thru 2008. IRS created substitute return for 2003 in early 2008. Substitute return was created as MFS. Spouse filed his return as MFS. Client will benefit several thousand dollars by amending and filing jointly. Account transcript for 2003 shows that the return was "certified" in Aug 08. Now the dilemma... In order to amend, I need the return transcript showing the numbers the IRS used on their substitute return. IRS said the return was in the "archive" and was only available by filing 4506 and paying for copies because anything older than 2005 had been archived. I asked if the fact that it was created and transacted in 2008 made any difference, and was told that any return from 2005 or older was in the "archive" and would only be available by filing form 4506 and paying. We created the form, client sent it with payment. 4 1/2 weeks later, the form came back with a letter saying that there was no return in the archive for 2003. Any suggestions??
  22. This is de je vue for the past 2 years. Since CCH has owned ATX, this is the kind of efficiency I have become used to from them!
