NT - Technical - Has anyone ever changed the Icon
Jack from Ohio replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
I was aware of how to change it on each workstation, but I was more interested in where the Icon graphic file is and if I could simply replace it with a modified icon file with the new design. -

Agree completely with Kea -
We have a network; server and 13 workstations. I would really like some instruction how to modify the Icon for this year's program so that it loads on all client computers when it is installed. I am not afraid to rework a file, or do registry changes, but I lack the knowledge about where and what to change in the program files to accomplish this. I know we have some very techno-geek types here and I await the necessary information. I am reasonably computer savvy, but his is past my abilities.

I believe all EFIN applications require fingerprints. A way to verify identity. Other than the hassle to get the fingerprinting done, and the time delay to get the EFIN, I have no objection. I fly straight and don't have to look over my shoulder, so my fingerprints are no big deal. I would want some kind of trackablity and verification for someone allowed to electronically send personal information to the IRS. Teachers,HealthCare workers, Daycare workers and anyone who has a public job that involves children, all have to do the same thing.

I AM THANKFUL: For the wife who says it's hot dogs tonight. Because she is home with me, and not out with someone else. For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes. Because it means she is at home, not on the streets. For the taxes I pay. Because it means I am employed. For the mess to clean after a party. Because it means I have been surrounded by friends. For the clothes that fit a little too snug. Because it means I have enough to eat. For my shadow that watches me work. Because it means I am out in the sunshine. For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing. Because it means I have a home. For all the complaining I hear about the government. Because it means we have freedom of speech. For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot. Because it means I am capable of walking and I have been blessed with transportation. For my huge heating bill. Because it means I am warm. For the lady behind me in church who sings off key. Because it means I can hear. For the pile of laundry and ironing. Because it means I have clothes to wear. For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day. Because it means I have been capable of working hard. For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours. Because it means I am alive. For my wife who always seems to nag at me. Because it means that someone cares about me. And finally, for too much e-mail. Because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

1. No Only the OWNER of the home may take the credit. 2. No See #1 Unless you were the owner before the upgrades were made, the amount is STILL $0 3. Yes 4. The roofing materials must meet specific requirements to be eligible for the credit. Click here for Energy Credit information is the site with all the specifics. IRS Special Edition Tax Tip 2009-12 Taxpayers who take energy saving steps this year may get bigger tax savings next year. The Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit, a tax credit for making energy efficient improvements to homes has been increased as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Here are seven things the IRS wants you to know about the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit: The new law increases the credit rate to 30 percent of the cost of all qualifying improvements and raises the maximum credit limit to $1,500 claimed for 2009 and 2010 combined. The credit applies to improvements such as adding insulation, energy-efficient exterior windows and energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems. To qualify as "energy efficient" for purposes of this tax credit, products generally must meet higher standards than the standards for the credit that was available in 2007.Manufacturers must certify that their products meet new standards and they must provide a written statement to the taxpayer such as with the packaging of the product or in a printable format on the manufacturers' Website.Qualifying improvements must be placed into service after December 31, 2008, and before January 1, 2011.The improvements must be made to the taxpayer's principal residence located in the United States. To claim the credit, attach Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits to either the 2009 or 2010 tax return. Taxpayers must claim the credit on the tax return for the year that the improvements are made. Here is the article

If it has to be mailed, a few days one way or the other will not matter. We all have the clients that need the refund "Yesterday", but in the world of the IRS, an extra day or two before processing will, at worst, equate to a 7 day difference in when a refund is issued. In the real world, if a difference of 7 days in receipt of your tax refund will sink the ship, you have more pressing issues that need dealt with. Now before you all jump on me for not having compassion for those "less fortunate" or "in situations not of their doing" I must tell you that I have lived through BOTH of those situations, been as low as it gets, and I make that statement from FIRSTHAND experience.

TRX won't stop soliciting my business!

Bump!! So maybe TRX people can see.... -
Mine came today - first class postage in an ATX envelope

Mine too! 30 minutes ago.

With the requirement for testing move to 2013, how is anyone going to be stopped from e-filing that has been doing it in the past? I am missing the connection here...

I jumped ship for 2009 and purchased my ATX software from TRX and saved a bunch of cash. Now we all know what the relationship between TRX and CCH is now... NON-EXISTENT! I purchased ATX from CCH this year because it is the best choice for my operation at my private practice, and for the firm I work for as well. At both places, I have informed 2 DIFFERENT sales individuals from TRX that we purchased ATX from CCH and were NOT interested, nor needed any of their products for 2010. This happened in June and July respectively. Maybe if I post in a public forum that the sales force at TRX has REFUSED to honor my request to be taken OFF their solicitation list, someone who is concerned with the reputation of TRX as a company will read and heed. I have received a phone call once a week (they left messages on my answering machine) for the last 8 weeks wanting to fix me up with software for my tax year 2010. Frankly, if their company is not able, or not willing, to do a simple thing as take someone who is NOT a prospective client off their list, I think that speaks very strongly of their abilities to follow through in other more difficult areas. Just a RANT!!!

Plageurized from mcb39 because it almost exactly matches my efforts at staying informed, compitent and ethical in my practice.... I take a two day class every year which generates 14 hours of CPE credits which are certified. Have attended this class starting in 2002 and all years since. In fact, class is Dec. 1 & 2. Two more classes, one Dec. 15 & 16 we call it "Gear-up" for corporate returns that would generate 4 CPE credits and a whole lot of current information. Second Gear-Up is Dec. 7 & 8 for 1040 returns that also would generate 4 CPE credits. That makes a total of 22 CPE credits this calendar year. I am a member of the local Professional Tax Preparers organization and attend all 9 montly meetings to keep abreast of new developments and share information with and from other members. I also attempt to attend Webinars which are offered by ATX and the IRS. These will also certify credits if you want. In addition, I subscribe to and USE Quickfinder Individual, Business and All States. I also use the US Master Tax Guide and the Wisconsin Tax Guide as well as the textbooks that are included in the schooling. In addition, I use Pub 17 as well as a working relationship with the local IRS and State of Ohio service office. I am consistent with reading the questions and answers on this board and use the "Search" or question option for issues that I need additional help with. I don't have a problem with being licensed by the IRS. In fact, before the end of the year, I may take the EA exam. It IS monitored, and does have meaning. Of course, nobody likes to pay a fee every year, but if it will help keep down some of the preparer error that I see cross my desk, I will not complain (too much)! I have held a PTIN since the first year they came out, which, of course, means nothing other than that I have tried to keep current with the times. The classes I attend are not inexpensive and not always interesting, but I think they are necessary to what I do. I hope this answers your question from my perspective as to what some of us unlicensed preparers do to comply. Now does THAT answer the question about some of the currently "unlicensed" preparers that inhabit this board? Currently there are very few of the crooked and unethical preparers that ever get questioned or caught. If there are not hundreds of thousands of dollars involved, those complaints get ignored. In my opinion, this is just a "Paper Tiger" that the IRS is building to hide the fact that they will extract more than $50 Million from those preparers that choose to be honest.
-
Do you really think that all those "unregulated" preparers who currently do not sign the returns they prepare will even think about complying with the new requirements? The new requirements only provide more hoops for us who choose to be informed, honest and ethical preparers to jump through. Please tell me how the new requirements will have ANY effect on those preparers who choose to remain invisible?? And if the testing is un-monitored, how will the testing have ANY validity? I'm just sayin...

I see NOTHING in the actions of the IRS to confirm that their intent is to make sure that paid tax return preparers are properly knowledgable and trained. All I see is a way to get money from us. If you disagree, look at the back pedaling on the CPE credits for 2011, and the delaying of mandatory testing till 2013. Why not require that anyone who is paid to prepare a tax return be an EA, CPA, or an Attorney? Again, do those tags after a person's name mean that they are properly knowledgable, trained and practice ethics in their tax business?

I don't have a smart phone yet. When the price wars start, and I can get a decent price and no contract, I WILL have a smartphone of some sort. I am predicting 12 months or less, the majors will offer unlimited service, <$50/mo. and no contract.

Look-back is now 5 years. Make sure she is under consultation with an estate planning lawyer. Thoughts of future tax consequences when/if the son sells the home. The basis will be $0 if she gifts it to him. Generally, this kind of transaction does not provide the desired results.

Subject: Online PTIN System Update Thanks to the collective efforts of the tax professional community and early-adopters, we have been able to resolve many of the initial start-up challenges with the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System experienced by some users. As a result, IRS has issued over 50,000 PTINs to date. We will continue our efforts to address any further challenges as they arise and we very much appreciate the helpful input and feedback we have received. As a reminder, we update the PTIN system FAQs as we receive feedback from you. Check the FAQs before you get started to make sure you have the most current PTIN information and what you need to get your PTIN. Although the website and call center continue to experience high volumes, we continue to see improvements in functionality and responsiveness. Thank you for your continued patience and for being a critical partner in tax administration.

Tax year 2010, "Any returns that are recieved after Oct 8, 2011 will have a minimum $50 'Last Minute" surcharge added. This is NOT negotiable." 9 months is plenty of time for folks to get there information together. This year has been the worst ever!! "Lack of planning on your part, does NOT create and emergency situation on mine."
