American Opportunity Credits allows deduction for ANY book, supplies, equipment that is REQUIRED for the course of study or attendance at the college. Graphic Arts students are commonly required to have MacBooks. Cameras for a photography class. Tack for horse riding studies, etc. Some colleges REQUIRE that the student have a laptop. This qualifies the laptop expense.

What if everyone refused to do tax returns until we have the acknowledgment of our current PTIN registration in our hands? My initial registration was Dec. 2010. I received my acknowledgment in the mail Sep. 2011. I will not feel adequately authorized until I have the acknowledgment in my hands. To prepare a return without being properly authorized by the IRS would be an infraction of the most egregious kind.

If you ever replace your computer, you will need it.

number of standalone users that can be installed on a license?

Your situation is completely allowed. If you had a second office location, you would need a separate license for it. -

If you have separate address locations, you will need a new license for EACH physical location. Been there. -

Three is the number. If you need more, the unlimited license pack is the way to go. We have 10 workstations and 7 preparers. Maximum of three preparers or three computers, whichever comes first. -
Does everyone realize that the meeting has already taken place? Definitely put your suggestions in the suggestion box on the Myatx site!!

I am having to replace our server, which means new up to date server software. I am finding that the scheduling program that we have used for years will not work with the new 64 bit technology. Same applies to the database program that we keep all our customer history and information in. What do you use in your office? We have 2,900+ clients for 2010 and our current database has about 13,000+ entries in it. Any suggestions about software would be helpful. Must be 64 bit compatible.

Posted 14 October 2011 - 09:16 AM Updated 10-13-11: Legacy and MeF 1040 efile deadlines-also refer to the IRS Quick Alert at the bottom of this email. The deadline for timely efiled 1040 returns (legacy or MeF) is Oct 17 at midnight (we recommend that you send your efiles to us at least 2 hours ahead of the deadline to give our EFC ample time to send to IRS) Any rejects should be fixed and resubmitted by Oct 22nd The IRS will continue to accept efiles after Oct 17th, but they may not be considered timely filed. The deadline to efile legacy 1040 returns is Oct 31st midnight, whether or not an extension was filed, and whether or not affected by the disaster designations. But those returns will not be considered timely filed unless they have the disaster designation on them.

I waited until 2nd week of December last year for just this very reason!!! The IRS need new/better programmers!!
-
Several possible reasons for your rejection. All reasons are solved by paper filing the return.

You are way to late to try to get things done timely. Your situation is why DO IT YOURSELF TAX SOFTWARE is good for my business. Seek out the help of a trained professional. I understand Barbers and Cosmetoligists are known to give tax information out for free. If you want USEFUL and ACCURATE help... Seek out a properly experienced and trained TAX professional. NUFF SAID!

Sounds like a single state issue. MA causes us all troubles. The healththcare system is a paper and logistical nightmare!! Ever since ATX started doing the truncation automatically, we have had no name issues. Sounds like you have a couple of clients that the system has name issues with.
-
Catherine, We do returns for all 50 states. I have yet to see an issue with names on a state return. Can you be more specific about which states? We use full first name, middle initial and full last name(s). ATX truncates and sends to the IRS automatically.

How about your client seek out another lending institution?

You need to find a COMPETENT tech!! That is very amateurish for him simply to reinstall windows without checking with you about what you need. Competent techs do not come cheap, but will preserve your data!! PACUN described a couple of methods that a competent tech would use to save your data. Find a DIFFERENT tech!!

Be sure your client's replacement 1099-S is marked and submitted by the closing company as "CORRECTED" or be prepared to deal with a CP2000 in a year or so.

Can someone direct me to the IRS information about when the time limitation of Residential Energy Efficient Property Credits carryover? This is in reference to solar, geothermal and wind. I find many references to the ability to carry unused credit forward, but no information as to how long the credits can be carried. - Jack-

State of Ohio School District e-file acknowledgments. State of Ohio started sending separate acks for the School District return tax year 2010. ATX has not embraced them to give them to us at all. Get on track with e-filing Ohio cities. All ATX's competitors are already there. Example: Drake
