  1. I don't know about WI, but I work about 90 miles from major casinos in IN. No matter where the person lives, IN want's the winnings claimed on an IN return. I fill out Non-Resident IN for gambling winnings 15-20 times a year for Ohio residents.
  2. My answer is straitforward. NO
  3. Report it the same as the sale of his personal residence. Us the amount of loan forgiven as the sale price. If there is a gain, the normal rules for the sale of your personal residence apply. Nothing else needs to be done unless/if a 1099C is issued.
  4. The credit he is/was eligible for is based soley on the date he purchased the property. There are no options to "...amend 2008 to remove the original credit of $ 7000 and amend 2009 to claim the higher credit $8000..." I wonder about the motivation of the client. What I stated above has been published knowlege since the FTHBC was started. How is it that this is even a question??
  5. I just realized this should probably be in the e-file forum. If a Mod wants to move it, please feel free.
  6. Does anyone in Ohio know how to access acknowlegments from School District returns? The state started sending separate acks for SD in tax year 2010. I cannot find any method of seeing them in ATX.
  7. www.energystar.gov will have all the information you need to answer the question to your client. The manufacturer must provide him with documentation that the unit meets the requirements for the tax credit. Just being energy star rated is not sufficient. There were energy credits for 2011 but they were greatly reduced compared to 2010.
  8. 7:00 AM is prime time to be productive. No phone calls, no one else in the office. Easier to go to bed earlier and start at 5:00 AM than to stay up late. This is the pattern that works for me since Father Time gave me the 1/2 century award!!
  9. I get 30% that change automatically. The others I have to do manually. I am e-filing 25-50 returns a day, and it is a nightmare going through each individual "held" to see if it needs to be released. I loathe to call tech support, because I will only get canned responses and no one will truly answer the question. Anyone found a way to make them all be automatic? Is the former employee of ATX listening?
  10. FAGO - RED POP!!!
  11. "Ask the box."
  12. Not to seem skeptical, but I was told the same thing at the beginning of the 2009, 2010 and now the 2011 tax season.
  13. Trust me! Been a user since 2003. Mapping drives is essential. There is no other way to nework than to use net setup. Many have tried, all have failed to make more than a small difference. The problem is the program and the HUGE amounts of data that move everytime something is changed. Till they put a different engine in the computer, it will always be slow when the number of clients starts to grow.
  14. It has been a complaint of mine since 2004. The program uses an Access 97 Database. Each time a return is opened, saved or closed, the program has to make a check of the entire database. The program is also Excel Spreadsheet based which requires a lot of information to be moved and sent to the monitors. If you have over 100-125 clients, it gets extrememly slow and there is no way to speed it up. We will have 2,900+ clients by the end of season, and are already over 300. We have 10 client computers on a server and on a busy day we will have 7-8 people using the program at the same time. Here are things that have helped: Updated the entire network to Gigabit standards. That means router, switch and all network cards in computers. Upgraded all computers to 2.0Ghz or faster processors and at least 500Mb video cards and as much RAM as each workstation will hold. Removed ALL non-business essential programs from client computers. Reduced Anti-Virus programs to only checking for virus and spyware. Turn all other functions off. These things have helped, but the program is still fat and slow. CCH has been promising for 2 years now, a new program with "no recycled code." If it is built using an SQL Database, it will be exponentialy faster. Still waiting....... Hope this helps.
  15. Agree with Jainen. You are correct.
  16. If the company was established in 2011, the system may not accept the EIN, even if it is correct.
  17. IRS representative spoke at our last PTP meeting. e-filing of 1040X is not even on the horizon. Currently you can e-file 2009-2011, but don't expect 1040X for a few years.
  18. Don't forget barber or bartender....
  19. Or prepared on a melting ice pack in the arctic with polar bears as witnesses. Al Gore established the grace period. She will have to get a written statement from him that claiming the baby in 2012 instead of 2011 will create too much carbon dioxide, and the offset credits will pay the additional tax she would have owed.
  20. If he does not have a PTIN, he will not be e-filing using ATX. He will also need an EFIN as well. I hope his clients are comfortable with his knowlege(?) and his ability or willingness to help if there is an issue down the road. My gut says... none of the above. He will use ATX to create and print returns to be filed as "self prepared."
  21. Agree with Lion & Hahn1040.
  22. Deduct all in the year purchased.
  23. No more posts here from me on this topic.
  24. I have yet to experience this problem. Sounds like a printer driver incompatiblity problem.
  25. For the record, I trust nothing from any news media when it comes to technology. Remember Y2K? USPS thieves only have to look for any mail with "Important Tax Information" written on the envelope, which is an IRS requirement now. Soft passwords and typical answers to challenge questions allow hackers into online e-mail accounts. If you choose to use them, make a strong password and use incorrect answers to challenge questions. If you don't lock the front door of your home when you are gone, don't be surprised if you have unwelcome visitors. Same applies to your online e-mail accounts.
