Thanks for the 'push' to do more emailing. This will be the last year for all the printing and mailing, I think, save for the few. Do you still include the name and address of each client on the emailed engagement letter? Do you sign it? I like the idea of the acknowledgement statement but may check with my insurer to be sure that suffices. The only detailed organizer pages I send out are for those who have self employment income and expenses and/or rentals to remind them of what they had the prior year. Could also be emailed, though. As can my questionnaire. But then I do want the returned questionnaire and very few have the capability of scanning to email in return. Giving this some thought!

I just logged in with no problems. Hate the additional id step though...sigh... Very new look on the website and pages. I will have to look around a bit.

There are many forms to come but looks forms based to me. Pages 1 and 2 of 1040 are the shortened version as on IRS.gov. 1099 Div and Int data entries look the same. Not sure what this person's issue is.

ATX main computer and laptop
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Guess that's what I will have to do to keep them. Then make the second trip to review and sign 8879. I charge by time, though, so that won't go over really well, I suspect. We shall see what happens. -
ATX main computer and laptop

Thanks, Jack. Got it. My technology smarts go only so far. I couldn't imagine how this would work and, well, it doesn't. -
ATX main computer and laptop

Nevermind. Doesn't work that way. Lost a couple of clients now. -
For the first time in 20 years, I am considering taking my laptop to 2 quite elderly and fragile clients who can no longer make it up my stairs. I seem to recall that I can have up to 3 users (computers?) per license but don't know how to install on a laptop, too. I have downloaded the software and watched the install video but am not sure what to do to get it on the laptop. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

any fast way to get a POA to process?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to schirallicpa's topic in General Chat
The fastest way I know is to have it in hand and call the agent or number listed on whatever notice with the issue. The agent will have a fax number s/he can access to talk with you immediately. It then follows regular processing but at least you could begin a conversation. Typically when I need it and use this method I promise myself to get a POA for every client some number of years but never get around to it. -
In order to have tax withheld from my RMD to cover my SE tax (husband is now retired so no more withholdings from his wages), I used the planner. Imagine my surprise when I saw a deduction for Sec. 199A! I followed the jump to the calculation and commend ATX for detailing it but, of course, I don't qualify. So will there be a prompt to confirm that a taxpayer qualifies? I happen to be the only one in my current client list affected by this disqualification but imagine that there will be some, um, mistakes with this.

2106 depreciated assets-now what?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
That's what I thought. There are a few office assets, too, but personal now. One client will be very, very unhappy but I've been warning her for a couple of years as the local return was going to stop allowing the offset anyway. A professor had several thousand in travel expenses for research and foreign lectures encouraged by the university but not supported. At least they have been warned and will have to try harder with the employers. Thanks for confirming. -
Congratulations! I wish, I wish, soon... If only I didn't like diving so much I would quit today. 2019 is going to be a very good year for you! Enjoy, savor, party!

In reviewing clients for organizer pages, I noted some number who have been taking expenses on 2106 for those unreimbursed by employer. This includes home office for 2 clients where it was required. As these are no longer deductible, do I now take back into income the expense or just convert now to personal use or ? I think one home office was simplified method but not the other one. Yuk.

Hmmm. wouldn't this have originally been a de facto partnership? If it was a business 'deal' and 'they' were going to flip a house, why would it be only your client's Sch. C? I agree it doesn't seem appropriate for A as it was a business - sort of. I'm guessing getting the SSN of the scoundrel is not going to be easy, though.

Access has been restored. In the list of failed logins, there were 3 attempts within 12 minutes. They do now have another requirement which I had forgotten. One is texted a 6 digit code that must be entered. And, of course, I had to agree to the new terms of service. But I got back in. Scary!

Medlin, I just tried your suggestion. Sure enough, "I" have exceeded the number of times to login so another 24 hours locked out. I'm okay with that but annoyed, too. Not sure how to have IRS use two factors. I thought the e-services set up was, well, set. Guess I will try again maybe Friday.
-
Just received an email that there have been 3 unsuccessful login attempts on my IRS account, etc. I looked at the full header and detailed blah, blah and it certainly seems legit. As it states to not even try again until 24 hours have passed, I don't think it's a scam. Anyone else ever receive this notice?

I do exactly as Abby Normal except I no longer have employees. I began doing this 5-6 years ago and am down to 2 file drawers where I keep those POA's, etc. and an empty file folder for each client to be used if they provide working paper copies until I scan and return them. My back up is BackBlaze. I love this whole set up and it will be so much easier to close up shop as Abby Normal is doing.

We old people more or less on Facebook appreciate your restraint. I've never looked at reddit but might have to seek out the one you mentioned. Now, how do I do that?
-
I was so certain I had this, packrat that I am, but seem to be missing 2004-2009 disks or they have yet to be unearthed. I have my code though and do have my Parsons TY 1996! That was my first year on my own, so sentimental value. Good luck in your search.

Reimbursing employee Medicare insurance
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Patrick Michael EA, how large is your wife's employer? Is the payment a taxable 'gift' and/or is it nontaxable and to reimburse her for her Medicare B, D and Supplemental coverage? Does the employer have a stated policy of making the payments for those over 65 to encourage them to sign up with Medicare or does it apply to all employees of any age? My understanding is forcing or encouraging or paying someone to utilize Medicare rather than a group plan is considered detrimental to the taxpayers and Medicare system, i.e., forcing the Medicare system to cover what the business should be covering in fairness under ACA. There is much more to this, of course, and there are exceptions to employers of 20 or fewer and whether there are 2 or more over 65. It's just complicated and I'm struggling to find a simple, definitive answer. My brain needs simple, you know! Thanks for responding, though. -
Reimbursing employee Medicare insurance
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Thanks, cbslee. I keep going round in circles finding one thing that says okey dokey and something else that says, nope. It seems that the employee is free to reject the church group health plan but the stickler is reimbursing the MC expense tax free which is her desire. By providing a taxable HI stipend, she gets penalized for rejecting the group plan while the church realizes substantial savings. I suggested that the treasurer get a documented opinion and IRS cite from the denomination. I am often the main provider of tax related issues but this one has me in circles and I don't want an error on my plate. Thanks again! -
Wow! Had I known, I could have visited you! All good advice here - don't rush into recovery. Follow orders at least until your appeal which I sort of hope you lose. I guess this is your first procedure but not that of the surgical team. We all know you to be a superman, but take time to heal and enjoy some down time. Before you know it, all the regular stresses will be upon you so best you prepare by allowing for good recovery.

I'm fairly sure I know the answer from the research I've done but my church finance committee won't like it. I referenced Church and Clergy Tax Guide and IRS. Employee at church will begin taking SS in January and has decided to sign up for Medicare Part D and Supplement in addition to A and B. In raw dollars this would be about $9000 less than her insurance paid by the church on the group plan. She is requesting reimbursement for the ~$300 per month this would cost her. As a small employer, I found the church could have a QSEHRA so this would work but only if there was no other group plan for the other employees. Well, the other employees, including the minister, would not like that. In fact, we are required to provide the minister her insurance through the denomination plan. Her salary could be increased to cover this and we would have to change the current personnel policy but the other employees possibly would expect the same percentage increase which isn't a budget option (even allowing for the savings) and would set a bad precedent, I think. Anyway, are there other ideas I am for sure missing? It seems I'm usually the bad news bearer when good folks at church want to do good things that IRS considers not permissable. Thanks!

" some clients will not like the subschedules" or the extra cost for preparation whether billing by time or form/schedule.
