  1. Thanks, Eric, for this explanation. Interesting that you recall my earlier comments - guess I've a reputation and not a good one I just tried the compressed and definitely prefer it. I personally won't miss the Following feature as I don't know the purpose and never used it so all good for me! Um, Lion, I, Margaret, posted the unsolicited opinion but Marilyn is good, too!
  2. Wow! Thanks for that! Now I can see the first listed topic so at least I will now know if anything is new. Thanks again. I think you must be about the best moderator of any group. You are always so very helpful in so many ways. I genuinely appreciate you.
  3. Big changes on this page again. Overall gratitude to Eric for continuing his efforts to keep this group together and in touch - seriously. That said, I am not a fan of this latest iteration of display. The banner and first few pinned topics more than fill my screen so (first world, lazy me problem, I know) I have to scroll a bit to even see whether there are any new posts. I'm wondering if it is at all possible (I know zip about this sort of thing) to make that top banner much smaller. I don't even really understand why General Chat has to have that large box when it says immediately above it Home > ATX Community Forum > General Chat. Just my unsolicited opinion, but this is my home page and I use it every day.
  4. Well, I know all of my clients and communicate with them via email and/or phone before and often after uploading documents to Verifyle. Some do not text so that would not work. If you do not know your clients and communicate via texting, phone, or email, not sure what you would do. In some cases I have been on the phone as they have accessed Verifyle to talk them through it.
  5. Also sometimes I get a rejection of sorts that I cannot Like a post. I thought that it was because I shouldn't express my opinion at that moment or something.
  6. Lately when I have looked at all the posts, after the last one I get this message: Sorry, there is a problem There are no unread content items. Error code: 2S136/J Then I have to go back to the Forums title at the top to get back to General Chat It used to just go back to General Chat automatically. Now when I go to Forums/General Chat, it is black as if there are unread posts but there are none. Not a huge problem but annoying. Is it just me?
  7. Verifyle is a bit clunky like that, too. One has to list each person as an account and it has to be (I found out later) the name as on the return. William, not Bill, for example. There is an editing tool whereby a couple can e-sign the second name but only 2 couples could figure it out. I could not but forwarded the instructions, such as they were, received from Verifyle. Some, actually many, folks are so much more technologically astute than I am! At least one couple printed out the 8879, signed, scanned, then uploaded to the portal but not everyone has a printer and/or scanner. It's always something!
  8. I have been using Verifyle for $9 per month but one doesn't need to keep it year round. It has some clunky parts for the less than savvy tech folks but most have managed surprisingly well. It's been worth it to me as all my returns are e-filed and have the e-signature. One or two had to print out the 8879 but were able to scan an upload back to Verifyle.
  9. I think you need to also check for any state limits on the grade that can be used as some restrict to high school. And whether home school applies - I would be surprised but lots of things surprise me these days!
  10. 9325 I use it all the time so clients have proof of acceptance and instructions on how to check things.
  11. Not directly related but when I began my first accounting class so many years ago, I got quickly annoyed with having to put down the mouse to enter numbers or write. I rapidly trained myself to use a 10 key with my left hand and still do. Then several years ago I began to have bad pains in my right shoulder and neck and switched my mouse to the left hand; pain gone. It's remarkable how our motor skills can be retrained to suit the needs we have.
  12. Yes, but the client moved to a nursing facility so I suspect the change of address is the issue. There was no withheld tax, no refund and nothing due. I'm checking to confirm but had to get 2848.
  13. I have a ScanSnap that is very quick and scans both sides for documents client provide, and my fax machine is actually another computer on a separate line that receives faxes which I save to the appropriate client file on the main computer. And any documents now received in my Verifyle portal go to the client file as appropriate. I can actually find just about anything pretty quickly.
  14. I manage my own by folders: CPA/Individual Clients (or Business Clients or Former Clients or Everything Else)/Client Name/Tax Year and within the tax years Client NameTYXXDocs or Return or whatever else for that year. In the main Client Name folder is Drivers License, POA, whatever else would cover multiple years. ATX also has a folder within the program I think called Permanent File. My system didn't cost anything and has worked for me for about 20 years. I have a paper folder only to use during the season to hold any documents provided and to be returned and maybe the original signed 2848 or 8332. Maybe ask the new person for suggestions as to a good structure to make both your lives easier.
  15. I have Aon Insurance through AICPA. It has an option which I chose called Netprotect which covers network damage and extortion as well as privacy breaches. Hoping I never have to file a claim but the peace of mind was/is worth the $190 it cost.
  16. Pacun, the amount previously received is on the 1040X, Line 18, as required. So the amount shown on 8879 is for the previous overpayment as well as the additional amount. schirallicpa, your question is exactly mine. One would think that to be the case whether or not the original was e-filed from ATX as the one I have was not. I suppose I could override the amount on the 8879 just to show the client and reflect the figure on 1040X, but I am afraid to try to select 1040 to e-file as the software may choose that. Wish this was really ready!
  17. Thanks, Randall, that is sort of what I was expecting to see. Once the 1040X was present, an option to e-file it would appear. It's possible, though, that it won't as I did not do the original e-file. Sigh....
  18. I have mostly completed a 2019 1040 amended return to e-file but don't seem to be able to do so. The 8879 has combined the original refund amount with the additional refund from the amended return (client has already received the original refund) and I cannot create a 1040X in Create e-file. Only the 1040 appears. If I choose 1040, does the entire form (as corrected) get sent with the 1040X? How does one get a client authorization to e-file on an incorrect 8879? Just refer them to the copy of the 1040X? But there is no reference on 8879 to 1040X. I did not prepare or e-file the original return.
  19. I am finishing an amended return to e-file and notice that Form 8879 is not indicating the refund amount is the difference between the originally filed return and the amended amount. In fact, it has added together the original refund PLUS the additional refund. Ideas? I cannot find anything online. Guess I thought, foolishly, that when ATX and IRS gave this the go ahead, there would be an additional or updated form authorizing ERO's to e-file the 1040X. Or am I completely missing something (entirely possible!)?
  20. It turns out that the second voucher was missed. It was uploaded with everything else into the portal but just missed. I believe they will go electronic from now on and are going to pay online this balance due. I always discourage mailing payments (though I DO support the postal service) and encourage direct deposit.
  21. Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Yes, it could have been so much worse. And your client is to be treasured for being so understanding. For sure their emotions were on a roller coaster, too, thinking first of how to use that big refund in this challenging time to having to pay a bit, even if not a lot. I understand about that ratio and have implemented a second review before return completion. And I'm so glad to have said bye to my small businesses and the last remaining partnership. My remaining individual clients are friends, too, even if we communicate just annually. So two more years on my license. It will be really hard to tell my clients but the tax laws are not getting easier or more stable. This forum is so very important to many of us for technical and emotional support. We love you, too, Possi!
  22. Welp, I just got an email from clients very likely affected by this very situation. They are not happy campers. Thanks, Judy, for the link to the article which I promptly shared with them. There is, however, the chance that one of the spouses (filing MFS) didn't mail in the voucher as directed. They are both 80+ but pretty sharp but one never knows.
  23. It seems you have at least most of the information you need to file an amended return. Maybe double check what the daughter did, file herself? Is she a minor? Dependent? If tax is owed, well, it's owed but my engagement letters stipulate that if I make an error, I will cover any penalty or interest but not tax owed. Perhaps a discount on return prep? Do you have a questionnaire that must be completed to include dependents? It's not great that you completely missed a document but, well, it happens so don't beat yourself up. I would get the missing info, do some research (although I think you know the answer here), prepare the corrected return and consult with the client with many apologies. We are human, you know.
  24. I think IRS supports only 2019 amended individual returns beginning Aug. 17 but not business returns. https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/modernized-e-file-mef-status
  25. grandmabee, can you tell whether a different 8879 is needed? Are the returns being held until Aug. 17 (per IRS opening day)?
