I've been having random problems, too. I have Chit Chat as a favorite which I click on every morning and leave as a tab. But sometimes when I refresh it, I get the message about Explorer not finding the page, etc. Then I may try again later and it works. On occasion I have retyped in the whole url also with mixed success. I just keep on trying!

E-file available for fiscal year clients?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to David's topic in General Chat
I was assured recently that business efiling was available year-round specifically because of fiscal year ends. I was told that different systems are used. I haven't tried the 990 I have yet but certainly the 941's, business returns, are being efiled and accepted. -
How did you get to ATX TV? I just reread about it in my archive literature and decided to check it out. When I went to MyATX, I couldn't find it. I also couldn't get to the communities, either. I sent an email asking about this so am interested to read the reply!

I received an email from ATX about an Ohio cities program. I called to find out if this meant that Ohio cities were no longer included in the MAX program or if this was something different. Carmen, the tech support person who took my call, had to look on the website to see what was included (of course, I had already done that and had it in front of me) and told me that only the state forms were included for 2008, not the cities. I would have to buy this new program. My response was, well, not as controlled as I would like. I kept pressing her to acknowledge that meant that the program I had renewed was then not what I had expected to buy and that CCH had taken out some features (Ohio cities). She finally transferred me to Bill, in sales. Turns out Bill was with "old" ATX for 4 years. He assured me that this new program was just an add on and all the cities that were there before are still included. I was relieved. I then asked about the organizer included in the archival cd, hoping, by chance, that it just might maybe be the mini. He said it was not but he had heard there was a good chance it would return next year as so many people wanted it back. I am definitely one of those! Just sharing information...

I just don't have the nerve to be a CPA
Margaret CPA in OH replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Your characterization of CPA's is a bit too broad, I think. I have made mistakes (two or three, I think) and admitted to them. Several of my clients have come to me because their prior EA or CPA has made a mistake or I have discovered mistakes which have been made. In the situation you've described, I think that billing $1500 to correct their mistake (their staff omitted a form) is totally unwarranted. I would never bill for a mistake that I made. It says so in my engagement letter. I hope your company owner insists on this bill being withdrawn and I hope the owner looks for another firm for future work. Even more, I hope that you modify your opinion of CPA's as a group. The firm you describe is not representative of the vast majority of individual CPA's and firms that I know. Just reflect on the CPA's that you've met through this venue. Do you really believe we ALL "have balls of steel and will steal from God or Satan?" I am an elder and deacon in my church so would have an extremely difficult time stealing, especially from God and, being a woman, have, well, different body parts! -
I knew that I was in august company on this board. Imagine the years of wisdom among us! Well, imagine the years, anyway... I am over 60 and got 19 correct. Missed the Candid Camera one by "that much!"

Another (and hopefully last) server move for the community?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Eric's topic in General Chat
Now is a good time for me, too, although I may have minor withdrawal symptoms! And don't be shy about money. I imagine many of us wouldn't mind if you had a little profit rather than just breaking even. -
I THINK WE ARE GOING TO NEED EACH OTHER
Margaret CPA in OH replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Thanks, Bulldog Tom, for reminding us how important this venue is to so many of us. I am a sole practitioner without another "watercooler." This board is not just important to me but critical, I would say. I just hope we can all get along despite the election! -
I became concerned about my fiscal year filing for a nonprofit so called. I didn't know that there was a separate "BFC" for business filing that is year round. Only the "EFC" for individuals is to be unavailable...according to Gloria.

I have a new client that has produced a cd of accompaniments for use in small churches, funeral homes, etc. There were several expenses related to the production of the master including the photos and design for insert, copyrights for use of hymns, and the master cd itself. They then ordered 1000 cds for sale. My only other client with inventory bought at wholesale and sold at retail so I am uncertain how to book the costs outside of the 1000 cds. They were one time costs and more cds can be ordered for only the production costs. In QB, how would these up front expenses be handled? I think that inventory would only be the 1000 cds. Would these other costs be capitalized as Class 57, Distributive trades and services? Amortized as Start up Costs (but they would all be incurred again should another cd be produced)? Nearly all of my clients are in services so my inventory knowledge is being stretched here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For the last several years I have bonded with a local computer guru who has built about 5 for me. He puts in the memory and the hard drive I want and copies all my data over. He has installed a backup system for an external drive which I put into a fireproof safe every night. For safety, he has an "Old" file which contains everything until I check out all the programs and data access. There are no extra bells and whistles (he did put on Google Earth the last time) and when anything goes wrong or isn't what I expect, he knows exactly what to do because he built it. He networked everything just the way I want it. I do have a Dell laptop, too, but it's the Vostro 1500 with XP and no bells and whistles. I am very pleased with my choices and have very few issues. It seemed with "off the shelf" products, I had too many problems although I am sure many folks are quite happy with their choices and will let you know of their experiences. Good luck!

Oo oo, where do I sign up? How much? What is the discount? Deadline (at least the first one)? Are there tutorials? CPE (for a fee, of course)? Unwanted manuals? I can hardly wait for the details!!!!!

Thanks JohnH! I've been wondering about the proper rates to charge. These guidelines will be invaluable especially for the coming season as I "reclass" some of my existing clients.

California Help Please - Taxpayer Payment Mistake
Margaret CPA in OH replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Thanks, Tom, for the phone number. That's the one I've been calling but "We are experiencing a high number of calls and are unable to talk with you now" or something is the message I keep getting. I was sort of hoping you had a secret number! I'll just keep trying. -
California Help Please - Taxpayer Payment Mistake
Margaret CPA in OH replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Please share the phone number you used to get through. I've tried several times and have sent 2 unanswered emails regarding my rental loss issue for a nonresident. Thanks in advance! -
That's the number I've had for quite some time for the Tax Practitioner Hotline. Hmmm....

CA preparers - rental loss cfw for nonresident
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Thank you, Lion, for your kind words. This has been harder on my husband that I expected. He is the firstborn, that may have something to do with it. MAMalody, the situation you describe is the same with my client. There is no other CA income or activity. The client used to live there years ago and kept the house when moving to Ohio. I will contact FTB I think. Jainen, I did find the 3801 and it does indicate to attach to the CA NR return so will look deeper into that, as well. For 2007, the potential tax is less than $100, but the point is to do it correctly and, if possible, to now offset py losses. It's been a tough week. I'll get to this on Monday. Thanks again to all and have a great weekend. -
CA preparers - rental loss cfw for nonresident
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
This is a great discussion and quite educational for me. I will be reviewing these responses in a few days but have to put this on hold for the time being. My father-in-law just passed away yesterday so my energies are redirected at the moment. Thanks, Jainen, for pointing me in the right direction. My client had no forms 3801 so I will have to figure out next steps. I don't really understand what you mean about CA taxation being based on his worldwide income, however, as the NR forms all have columns to specifically id CA income. I will have to get back to this. -
I have a client, Ohio resident, with CA rental property. In 2007 he actually has a small net income. I don't see where to carry over his py losses to offset this. He has never been able to take advantage of these losses for CA purposes. Any suggestions?

I, too, would like to read about comparisons between Eudora and Thunderbird. I have been a Eudora user for years and especially like the multiple personalities feature to handle my 3 email accounts. I wasn't aware of other such programs. What I saw online about Thunderbird looks very similar.

I tried to check out the status of an efiled 1099 from June 11 (I know, it's late). After going through the steps to check status, I got the message to go to "Get Acks, Mail & Updates" from TaxWise/InterviewPLUS to get this update. What is the story with this? I am an ATX customer, I requested this information through ATX, I have NO CLUE what to do with this message. I did call Customer Service (miraculously answered by an ATX person) and finally got a promise to email the acceptance to me. I am getting really weary of being treated as a second class customer. Am I going to regret renewing already?

Thanks so much, Catherine. I will pass along this information. I'm certain these folks will appreciate having even one contact to make about this issue. They can then take it from there. Thanks again!

Hey, I've been using that on my personal email for several months! Isn't it great? I've gotten so many comments about it, too. I notice that you are in Lexington MA. I lived in Boston for 13 years in another life. Now I have a retired couple who moved to Concord to be near family. They have several Ohio trusts. I believe only the revocable trusts need to be "converted" or updated to MA trust verbiage for probate absquatulation purposes. Neither they nor do their daughters know any attorneys who handle this work. My Ohio "go to" attorney doesn't have any MA connections either. Is there an attorney with whom you work and trust that competently handles trusts? Let me know if you do. I thank you!

I am astonished! When I try to open QB 2004, a box appears that says, " QuickBooks and Internet Explorer...Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is installed on this computer. Quickbooks 2004 is not compatible with Internet Explorer 7. To ensure uninterrupted QuickBooks use, Intuit recommends the use of Internet Explorer 6. " It then gives the options to "Use Internet Explorer 6," "Exit QuickBooks," or "Continue." Son of a Gun!!! I was so intimidated by Options 1 and 2, I never tried "Continue." Well, I just clicked on it and VOILA!, it opened! I feel like such an idiot now. I will slink back into obscurity... Tomorrow I go to certify about 6 scuba students. I think I need that break even though the water will be about 60 and thunderstorms are in the forecast. At least Microsoft, CCH, and Intuit are not involved!
