Roth Distribution shouldn't be taxable
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
TA DA!!! One last desparate effort = correct results! On Line 19 of 8606, the distribution amount from the 1099R flowed but I just input 0 that there were no "unqualified" distributions. It worked! Sometimes it really helps to read everything and not take all for granted. Such as my experience with Ohio and piggyback returns. Just because in 2001 Ohio was not allowed to be efiled unless piggybacked and in subsequent years the piggyback option was always the default, I assumed (and you all know how dangerous that can be) that the option to file alone was not available for Ohio. Good to know that over 60 isn't over the bridge - just reaalllly close. Thanks again to all. -

Roth Distribution shouldn't be taxable
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
Thanks to all. Frankly, I never noticed the 1st year box. What I did just now was input the year there and in Box 5 $2500. That didn't help, either. 8606 is still required to efile and it still figures taxable income on earnings. Grrrrr... I will see about the client getting a corrected 1099R, I guess. The owe a bit of money already so a little more delay won't hurt. It isn't as if they are expecting a refund. Thanks again! -
Roth Distribution shouldn't be taxable

Bumping this up. Anyone? I just don't see the problem and why the 8606 has to be included with the T in the 1099. I've even tried putting 0 in the taxable amount but the software insists on 8606 to efile. But I just don't believe it is taxable. What am I missing? Thanks! -
Tell your nephew that you were not the only one in the world without an account. I don't either and cannot imagine that I ever will. I have enough trouble keeping up with just my email! And I don't really care if I miss out on something - I'm too busy to notice and haven't enough time now to do what I need to do let alone what I want to do. Extra bonus - no virus.

Client, age 61, received Roth distribution of $5316. Total basis from 1998 and 1999 is $2500. 1099R has code T, exception applies. The whole amount should be nontaxable. ATX refuses to allow efiling with 8606 but when I input distribution and basis, it shows a taxable amount of the difference. What am I doing wrong? She has met all the criteria for no tax as far as I can tell so it must be me. Thanks for help.

If paper file federal, can't e-file state?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to David's topic in General Chat
It is so good to keep learning! Mechanically I have selected to efile federal and Ohio because in the first year of efiling (I just checked back for 2001), it was not possible to select Ohio only for submission. I feel so very dumb to not have realized in the interim that it changed. But then, I don't think there have been more than a handful of clients that would have chosen that. The first few years it was nearly arm twisting to get folks to even consider it. Hmmm, retirement still lookin' good! -
I will try to remember - along with the diving photos. There is a chance I have something around already as this work was primarily done for the brunch following our son's wedding last May. The guests were nearly all from out of town so I wanted to have a good sendoff. The house, in and out, never looked better before or since!

We live by an acre or so of woods and have lots of trees. Our front yard is ground cover and stones in a pretty design that looks like a stream flowing. We put out baskets of flowers with a few things that bloom in the shade. No mowing at all. The back is some scraggly grass and assorted wildflowers and wild strawberries, lots of bird feeders on a plot just for that and stone patio. Truly minimal maintenance.

I don't know your state but, if it is a 'piggy back' state like Ohio, you cannot efile as a stand alone. Ohio returns begin with the AGI so cannot be efiled independently. KY and some others can be efiled separately as they begin with original data. -

Absolutely amazing! Where do people find the time and creativity for such things? I can only imagine the bruises and worse on my body were I to undertake the treadmill 'dance!' Thanks, Catherine. It is awesome to see the genious of others.

Trust Income reported on personal return
Margaret CPA in OH replied to taxbrewster's topic in General Chat
The 5227 now incorporates the 1041-A and has for a year or two. -
We're talking 'timely' don't you know? Who could possibly have guessed that such information would be needed before then? Not our IRS! Everyone knows that every taxpayer is intimately familiar with all income of every type... well at least all the deductions, anyway.

Ray, I am IN Ohio. Maybe you could use me, too, after this season. My practice is sort of winding down...Pacun and I could be your 'back office.'
-
Ooooo, that's bad! And to think I'm probably not too far from that scenario. If age doesn't get me there it will be the tax code!

Ah, yes, ignorance is bliss. And we all know Rule #1: First, assign blame!

Hmmmm, can we just for a moment use our imaginations on that? Conjuring, conjuring...

Oooh, Bart, that's a great line! I am having that posted on my desk immediately!

You might suggest that in the future he have candies or such with his logo and info printed for promotional items. Sort of like the chocolate 'gold' pieces that some accountants pass out at tax time.

I just filled in my zip code.

I have had my computers custom built for about the last 5-6 years. Yes, the Microsoft programs are legit, I have the discs and all are registered. The best thing I have experienced is the great service when there is a problem. And in all this time, I can recall only once when it was an equipment problem. I can call these guys, tell them what's happening and they either talk me through it, access online or come over as they are about 5 minutes away. They know my exact setup so I don't have to spend time explaining much. The shop is 1/2 block from the Dunkin Donuts so I do treat them at least annually plus my holiday bottle of wine and cookies. They never charge me for phone calls or the online help, either. My laptop is a Dell Vostro but I use that for my dive business. I'm a happy camper!
