Gotta go with Tom on this one. Exactlty, why amend? The only other question which I think is null, is did the daughter make enough to pay for more than one half of her support? If she did than that would cancel the exemption for the parents and then they would have to amend. But.... as I said by the figures you posted, this should be a moot point. Just food for thought.

Have a client whose son is attending college full time in Lima, Ohio. He is a full time non-resident. He has worked three different part-time jobs in 2015 and only one of them withheld Lima city tax. Should I report the other wages? I see on the form where is says "Resident" must report all income. Right now he only owes $1.00 to Lima. Jack, JB, Margaret or anyone else what say ye?

How many of you are getting these forms incorrectly filled out? I personally have been getting quite a few. Some fill out the whole form when all they needed was the column for the 12 months. Some have left off the covered individual and so on. I enter it correctly in the program as it will not allow me to save or proceed until the form is filled out correctly. What are others doing?

Is there any chance the estate return was NOT marked as final? That would simplify things if so. The only other thought is the possibility of having to amend the estate returns and the bene's as well.

Thanks KC for the link. I very well may just do as you say and paper file the return.

Thanks Tom and Gail, no I didn't post it there but will do so. The program just doesn't provide these type of items. I can only hope for the IRS to read the notes transmitted with the return. Maybe a phone call to the Practitioner Priority line might help.

Just bumping this up. Still need some help with this.

Client has an educational assistance grant and received form 1099G with 6K as taxable. I know if these funds are spent on tuition and other approved items and the list of conditions are met, the only taxable portion is the amount not spent on education. The spent over 12K on tuition to a University and received form 1098T. Also, I used the amount actually paid minus the 6K for the AOC. Ok so, OneDesk does not have a taxable grant/scholarship worksheet. There is a section where the preparer can write notes and send it electronically with the tax return. My first thought was send a spreadsheet/worksheet with form 8453. Well, the 8453 doesn't have a section for this. How would any of you report this? Is there another form I am missing? I have looked and looked and looked and can't find anything.

You got it Lynn!!!! And if the situation warrants in capital letters

Esquire wow!!! What else can we add to the end of our name? I had an administrator in a school that I taught at send memos with every designation possible at the end of her name and almost to the point of "Really" So, in my infinite wisdom I replied to a memo that I received from her that was somewhat derogatory and signed my name at the bottom with the designation of KMA after my name. Nope, she didn't get it.

I tried to get the NC State return to calculate a penalty on OneDesk for under payment of estimated taxes. Form D422 is the correct form. Each time I entered the tax from the previous year and select the short method, the program deletes the tax entered and opens the regular method. Just to see what happens, I re-entered the tax in the regular method window and the program removes the tax entered again and opens a blank input for form D422. The only thing I can do in this case is let the NC DOR calculate and assess the penalty as there is no means to override. This TP does owe a good amount and is subject to a penalty on the Fed side but NC won't calculate. What a piece of junk program. For all of these problems and I feel like seeking a refund from OneDesk. Oh wait a minute, they won't answer the phone. Sure is beginning to sound like a repeat TRX deal.

Going back a couple of years, the OneDesk program wasn't this bad. it had it's shortcomings and quirks that I added up to a learning curve on my part. The year however, has been the worst ever. I can handle a few errors or glitches once in a while but no support to help identify and correct these things is just in excusable. Support simply has been non-existent this year. This is all too familiar as I was part of the TRX snafu as well. These companies are 3rd party resellers that seem to start off well and then take a plunge for the worse. For me, I have learned my lesson and will not try to cut corners on software any longer.

There is an authorized rep and I am already doing this for nothing. I like rfassett's idea and will try to follow his.her lead.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I have done that several times and don't know what fixed it but I have not had the errors for the last three days. Still buying Drake. I now panic during the preparation of each and every return. I can only suggest that those who are using OneDesk, check every calculation and every entry. Review each return very carefully to be sure some gremlin in the program hasn't had lunch on your entered information.

Has anyone notice that e-filing for 1120S doesn't work like it did last year? If you put the return in the queue it doesn't show up when you hit transmit. Search for it and it is not there. I had to remove the return from the Queue and then select transmit. The return did get transmitted as far as I can tell. I have more than one of these. Today checking to see if the e-file was accepted, click on get e-file status and they same thing, nothing is there. Go into the return and there it shows the return was accepted. I mean what kinda crap is this???? Note: The issues with the disappearing 1095-C didn't occur until the program updated today.

I just experienced this issue today. I filled out the 1095C and the information was not there. I had to re enter it. The fact that a shared responsibility payment was calculated is what got my attention. The OneDesk program is leaving a lot to be desired this year. As far as the support from Dan, I have experienced the same thing. No return phone calls. I can tell you to contact OLT as they have told me they would support the product. I will be doing so tomorrow after the errors tonight and others I have experienced. Neither OneDesk nor OLT will get my business at the end of the season. Poorly functioning program, literally no support, and can't trust anything the program is doing.

In the past, I prepared the taxes for a couple who ended up only having social security income. They were not required to file and told them so and felt kinda guilty taking their money for no reason. The gentleman passed away a few years ago and just this year his wife has passed. There is no estate, the family did hire an attorney to go thru the normal processes. Again, no 1041 is needed. Is there any reason to file a final return for the both of them? If there is, could we file a final MFJ return or would they have to be separate returns due to the time between each of them passing. Thanks for any suggestions here.
-
I think you made a very wise choice. For this very reason, and I'm sure you probably did, I never recommend completing the final return for at least two years to allow for winding up of business. I have heard of some folks not filing a final return at all for this very reason. Good you got out of this one.

I assume the program will generate a cover page that I can adjust to fit the folders that I buy?? Sounds like this will be the best option for me. I still may take a brief look at ATX. Jack kinda scared me off a bit when he said the feel of the program was nothing like the old days prior to the CCH take over.
-
I agree with Rita. I think you hit it spot on. However, the rent with option to buy is a possibility as well. I would suggest you check the sales contract as well to be sure and if it is not an option of rent to buy, the proceed as you have stated.

I started using secure file pro. So far, none of my clients want to use it. I send explicit instructions and the process is really simple but......
-
I am looking to try Drake next year and have received the 2014 TY CD. I will get it loaded soon but... wondering if Drake does contain K-1 letters and any other letters like letters for the client stating what their refund or balance due is with instructions? I hope so. I have had to create them myself the last three years and will welcome a change. I'm not lazy just want to work more intelligently and not harder.
-
Ah heck, don't be too hard on yourself. It is that time of year.
-
Mine too allows entry of more than one 1095A B or C form. I would do as Jack stated but would create a detailed statement showing the breakdown of the entries.

2014 S Corp Tax Return Balance Sheet Doesn't Tie to Books
Terry D EA replied to David's topic in General Chat
Judy and CBSLee have given the best advice here. As you also pointed out, the statement explaining your changes would be a good way to handle this. Like others, I use the tax depreciation as well. I am working on an S-Corp right now that the owner should fire the bookkeeper. Several discrepancies in the expenses, owner compensation; etc. I pulled reports from paychex to validate the payroll expenses. The rest of it I'll never see. They have signed an engagement with the language that I am not conducting an independent review or audit of their information and that by signing the agreement, they state that all expenses can be substantiated and the tax return will be prepared from the information they have provided. Anything I find that is contrary to law I question and draft a statement as to the changes and reasons for them. CYA at all times!
