Bob, look into attending one of the seminars presented by John Sheeley, EA on this topic, his website Tax Practice Pro., Inc. Lynn

Depending on the states involved the W2 just may be correct. You may need to see pay stubs in order to discern when income to state #1 began/ended and the same for state #2.

Is eservices available to retreive W-2, 1099, 1098 etc?
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to cred65's topic in General Chat
No, you have to fax the POA to the CAF unit, wait 7 - 14 days for it to be entered in the system. -

Forewarn the client that if state filing is required, the IRS Wage & Income transcript does not capture the state withholding. The client will have to either contact the employer for a duplicate W2, contact the state for one (if your state provides that - mine does not) or a final paycheck stub with all the withholding details. Lynn -
On the IRS e-services you ask for a wage and income transcript for 2015. Does this adequately answer your query?
-
What are the dollar amounts for each code? Ask to see the client's final paycheck stub; it may yield better information that those codes (which I presume you suspect are in error).

Has anyone in this group downloaded the 15.8 update yet? I'm holding off until I see some feedback on it.

My unresearched response - I'd do the disposition, either 'converted to personal' or 'do not calculate gain or loss', whichever one takes it out of service as of the date of transfer to the ex- and does not show it on the 4797.

Have you asked for the final pay stub? Maybe there's a clue there .

My client with RR retirement, had also worked in a job in the social security system. His RR Retirement combined both the RRR and Social Security. The social security was reported in the blue section, box 5. RRR was reported in the green section box 7; gross and taxable amount of pension equates to boxes 1 and 2 of the 1099-RRB. Be sure to exclude the portion of the Tier II employee contributions; I use the simplified method to calculate the taxable amount. Does this help ?

Efile extension AND mail extension with payment
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to BHoffman's topic in General Chat
I have one client who insists on sending his own extension. But, one year he was on his way out of town (airport), handed his extension envelope to someone at the airport (! ) with the request to put it in the mailbox. Lo and behold that extension request never made its way to the IRS ! He complained bitterly that the IRS should have granted his extension since he gave the envelope to 'someone' to put in the mail. I decided then to efile his extension with some guesstimate as to what he will be paying and sending him the paper voucher for him to send with his check. Belts and suspenders for this guy. -
1099 R - Code G with Taxable Amount Populated
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to Yardley CPA's topic in General Chat
In ATX, form 1099-R see if there's a line just under line 2a that says 'rollover amount included in 2a'. After verifying with the client that the monies were indeed rolled over, inputting the rolled over amount on that line makes it nontaxable. -
Efie Acknowledgement-IRS says return not filed

The e-file help desk, as far as I know, is strictly for professionals to call. I think the taxpayer is limited to the 1-800-829-1040. -
how to treat Partners/Partnership
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to WITAXLADY's topic in General Chat
I include the health care premiums paid by the partnership for the partners benefit in with their guaranteed payments. -
Eric, I would have sent an email but didn't have your email addy - now I do and will make sure it's in my address book.

Mine is starting to give me problems too. A few years ago I had some problems, which were solved by buying a new paper tray. I'd really like to buy another printer just like the one I have (HP 2300L) but that series is no longer in production. A new one can be had for $650 and remanufactured ones for about $200.

Yep, I agree. I reamed NAEA for sending out their membership renewal email a few days ago. What I wish, though, with the ATX renewal email is if they would just tell us the renewal $, instead of making us call the fricking reps! And the renewal invoice is nowhere to be found in my online account. Color me grumpy

It is all good, Eric !! Thanks !!

IRa's, 401k's are distributed to their named beneficiaries. If there was no named beneficiary then they go to the estate.

What does your engagement letter state regarding 'retainers' or deposits? Mine says they are nonrefundable, and that's how I would treat this since you've put time into this. Lynn

I have made this very mistake - once. After that I vowed to always file the parents' return first, and then the dependent's return. Oh, and the year I made this mistake I did not charge the parents for the returns. I didn't wait to file the parents, just made it a paper/mailed return with an explanation cross referencing the dependent's amended return.

ATX said they'd charge us this year $1.50 per 1096 efiled. In early March they posted on their blog that they'd initiate the charges for those 1096 forms efiled through them; I have yet to see any charges on my credit card for that nor any other correspondence on it. IMO $1.50 per is a pittance in the grand scheme of things. Nelco charged me upward of $1.89 per W2 efiled with the State of Louisiana. Lynn

Perhaps what they provided was the 1099-SA and the annual account reconciliation. Lynn

Ohio return
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana's topic in General Chat
Thanks JJ Stephens. It appears that the Village of Delta, generic city tax form, remains a paper/mailed return. It did not show up under the Ohio list of e-filed forms. Lynn
