Or check the form availability on the ATX Support website, www.support.atxinc.com - you will have to log in first. -
Withholding tables (high income earners)
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to ILLMAS's topic in General Chat
Have you reviewed the withholding tables in Pub 15? Probably one reason the high earners owe is that their withholding is based solely on their W2 earnings. In my experience often the high earners also have high levels of interest, dividends and capital gains. -
Won't it also depend on the state's filing threshold ?

You are using AL Forn 40NR , and not the 40, right ?

Quickbooks W2's to ATX2016 Payroll
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to ILLMAS's topic in General Chat
This was posted today on the ATX blogspot: Importing W-2 Data from QuickBooks: Interim Solution Wolters Kluwer has learned of a change that Intuit recently made within its QuickBooks product, which limits customers’ options for printing W-2 forms. We currently are working on identifying a permanent solution to this inconvenience, but we have identified a third-party workaround that may help you to continue working uninterrupted ahead of the January 31 W-2 deadline: 1) Install Foxit PDF viewer https://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ (This is a free software.) a. Go to https://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ b. Click on "Free Download" on the right-hand side 2) Open PDF generated in QB in Foxit. a. Click on the Open folder and locate PDF generated in QB. b. Select QB PDF. c. QB PDF opens. 3) Convert to .xps file. a. Click the Print icon. b. From the Printer dropdown menu select MicroSoft XPS Printer. c. Save .xps file to computer. 4) Import converted .xps into Payroll. a. Open Payroll program. b. From the Return Manager, select Import/W2/1099. c. Select .xps file printed from Foxit. d. Click Import. 5) Successful import of data. Foxit PDF viewer is an unaffiliated, third-party software solution. NYS Now Requires TP Driver License info on NY Tax Returns To those of you who prepare NY tax returns - please be advised that there is a recently passed provision requiring taxpayer (and spouse) driver license ID information - which at present - is required for 2016 tax returns. While NYSSEA does not have anything specifically definitive in had to provide even its own members at present - we were advised by top NYS tax officials that it is law. Some software companies are aware of it - the major ones- some are not. I strongly advise you to consult your software vendor regarding this issue ASAP before you begin processing NYS returns. Since there's so much controversy over this issue on such short notice - a number of issues are unclear at this point. Should I get any further more concrete, definitive, better descriptive information - I'll write back here. NAEA is ALREADY aware of it and researching it.

90 day letter and Tax Court
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
On a NOD, the 90-days is exactly that - 90 calendar days - which start the date after the date on the letter. The NOD letter should state the due date for filing a Tax Court petition, but be cautioned to calculate it yourself as if the actual 90th day falls after the stated date on the notice then your actual 90th day rules. According to my calculations the 90th day will be 1/10/2017 - the due date for the taxpayer to mail a petition to Tax Court. But please, calculate the 90 days yourself - don't take my word for it !!! IMO, the taxpayer should go ahead and file the Tax Court petition ASAP, along with the $60 filing fee, and ask that the case be sent to the Appeals office at your nearest IRS office. If the $ is under $50,000 it could be filed as a 'small tax case' which has more relaxed rules than regular cases. Only an attorney or a Tax Court qualified non-attorney may prepare and file the petition on behalf of the taxpayer. There are many Tax Court qualified non-attorneys around the country who would be more than willing to assist with preparation and filing the petition for what I understand is a modest fee. Names that come to mind are Sherrill Trovato, EA in California, Kevin Huston, EA in North Carolina, Tom Gorczynski, EA in Maryland, David Fogel, EA, Frank Degen, EA in New York, Richard Reedman, EA in North Carolina. Hope this helps, Lynn -
Stupid things we forget until the power goes out
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
We , really my mother as it was her house at the time, contacted a local electrician re the cost of installing a whole house generator for our ~1800 swift house in the New Orleans area. Prices vary, depending on the preferred max output. I think the range they quoted was $8000-$12000; my mother opted not to pursue this. I would expect installation costs to be less on a new construction, or at least you are less aware of the cost ! -
Paychex and SCorp officer health ins
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to BHoffman's topic in General Chat
I have to track these items for my one S-corp client who uses Paychex and give to the Paychex rep, no later than 12/15, a list of the income to be included in only box 1 of the W2 wages, and a breakdown for box 14 (health insurance, medical plan - reimbursements), and I have to also calculate the personal use of the company vehicles to be imputed as W2 wages, boxes 1, 3, and 5, also due by 12/15. A separate spreadsheet is sent to the Paychex rep for that. The first year my client used Paychex I instructed them to tell the Paychex rep about these issues, but somehow that 'fell through the cracks'. This was not discovered until after the 2015 quarterly reports and W2's had been issued by Paychex. I had to calculate all this for 2015, submit it to Paychex who had to amend the 941's, 940's, SUTA reports and W2's, all for a princely fee. Bottom line is that I had to be the one to spoon feed the info to the Paychex rep. -
If you pre-set the appointments, via the clients' tax organizer, have you considered a courtesy reminder call 2 days beforehand (akin to what doctors/dentists do)?

Client List and Cleint Address label
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to Naveen Mohan from New York's topic in General Chat
select all returns for which you want to prepare a label (or include in your list) click on 'reports' and options will come up to print a list, print labels, etc. -
My CE is spread throughout the year, and begins with the IRS Tax Talk Today webinars which are offered on an almost monthly basis. My state society offers CE in late May/early June. I always attend a 16-hour year-end tax update in early December. Most years I get about double (or more) the requirements per IRS/NAEA.

My condolences. I am not sure, but think perhaps the executor for your stepfather needs to sign a form 56. Hopefully others more knowledgeable in this will chime in. Lynn

Enrollment Card
Lynn EA USTCP in Louisiana replied to Naveen Mohan from New York's topic in General Chat
Good luck with this. I renewed in a cycle 2 years ago and never received my updated card. Are you a member of NAEA? IF so, contact Justin at NAEA and he will contact IRS on your behalf. If you are not a member, join -'this is a great member benefit! Otherwise, call OPR, or is it RPO, and ask them when the card will be mailed to you., lynn -
