  1. Yeayyy!!! Thanks Eric!
  2. One of my favorite movies of all time!
  3. Please know that our heartfelt condolences and prayers are out to you.....We on this board may be an inadequate substitute for a hug...but know that we are hear for you
  4. I can't imagine how people put more than one through
  5. Just FYI....the cost for my daughter's Fall 2012/Spring 2013 school year tuiton and fees (University of Akron, Akron, OH) is $11,865.68. This, of course, does not include room & board (approx. $10,000.00). This is pretty average for a public University in Ohio...ridiculous!
  6. how do you use more than one monitor? I have two good monitors and I would love to use both, but only use one because I have no idea how to hook up two....do I need some type of adapter?
  7. Yes....but the training course was a good refresher for me in some weaker areas. It reminded me how much I rely on software to do the calculations and reminded me of the theory and detail behind the programming.
  8. It was pretty basic stuff
  9. I passed! Due to computer problems, myself and a few others had to sit in a lobby for 40 minutes to wait for our results....that sucked
  10. Good point. Fuller did use ONLY the word permanently....no mention of totally......splitting hairs, but I guess I hold off on my complaint
  11. I am taking a review course (by Fuller) and it is stating that a taxpayer's permanently disabled son, age 26, who lived with taxpayer all year is NOT a qualifying child for EIC because they do not meet the age test. But I thought (and I am reading in the instructions that if permanently and totally disabled, the child can be any age and be qualifying child for EIC....Help?
  12. Thanks Jack! Yes, I am going to BeaverCreek tomorrow (11:00am)...any tips or suggestions? The review course I just finished (Fuller) did a pretty thourough review of 1040, and circ. 230....I actually learned a few things! Most of the practice exam questions I missed were either due to overthinking like you mentioned or due to not reading thoroughly and missing an important word such as "not". What I am worried about are qustions for which I need to use the references (Pub 17, 1040) and how much time I will waste finding what I need. I plan on spending time tonight looking up items on the on-line pub 17 and 1040...as opposed to the paper versions I am used to.
  13. I am getting really nervous about the RTRP test tomorrow.....I have not taken a test since college 20 years ago....and even then I had terrible test anxiety and would do poorly on tests even when I knew the material. I have been studying every night for over a month and took a review course. Wether I pass or not, I still do not feel that a timed computer test is an adequate test of preparer competency...it is more of a test on how well we take tests and guess
  14. I was not going to pay RTRP prep course because (as you mentioned) I thought I could prepare myself and save money....but I need to pay for 15 hours of CE and if the RTRP review will count towards 10 of the required 15, I figured I should go ahead and pay for one. Several ads I have seen offer the review course along with an additional 5 hours CE.
  15. Does the RTRP review courses I see offered also count towards the mandatory 15 hours CPE? I was thinking about self study to save money, but if I can kill two birds....
  16. Registered to take the RTRP exam Sept 14....will this be sufficient time to study? I am being bombarded by ads for different CE and Test prep companies.....does it really matter as long as they are IRS authorized?
  17. I love all of you like a family
  18. Not a client, just a friend.....she is not in town, so cannot sigh the 8878 for an extension...she'll have to file it on her own....I'll likely end up walking her through it.
  19. Client previously filed her 1040 form electronically (Turbotax), but today just realized that it did not include her Ohio and local returns....and she is out of town on vacation. Ohio and her locality do not have seperate extension forms...they allow extension autimatically IF federal extension is filed. Even though she has already filed her Federal return, should she electronically file a 4868 so that her Ohio and local returns can be extended?
  20. Thanks....returns have been prepared....turns out there are 4 kids...all with the same gross proceeds....so 4 returns to file
  21. Received cost information from broker today. Gross proceeds were $1,079, but cost was $1,087....-$8. So does child need to file a return based on gross proceeds or not since income not above $950..excuse the dumb question, but I do not want child to get a letter for non-filing. and I am confused as to what they consider gross income. The tax side of me believes that since AGI is less than $950, No filing required, The bookkeeper side of me sees gross proceeds of $1,1079 as gross income
  22. I have been doing taxes for 12 years, but I am not a CPA or EA.....Just a guy who does import/export and some taxes for a company full-time. Individual tax prep, I have always done on my own out of my home in my spare time. Due to costs and mainly time contraints from my full-time job, I never bothered to study for and take any exams, such as EA or CPA. For the same reasons, I never followed any strict CPE requirements...I always just studied on my own to stay fresh on various tax topics. Now that is all different....I need to take time off work pay to take the RTP exam (after I pay for study materials from someone), then continue to miss work and pay for CPE credits throughout the year. I am a single father with a full-time shipping Manager job...barely able to pay for his kid's college tuition....how am I supposed to find the money for this? seriously looks like my days as a preparer will be over soon....anybody want 150 clients?
  23. Ahhhh....The old telephone rebate....I knew I remembered this issue from somewhere! Thanks!
  24. Elderly client with only Social Security....none of it taxable. She does not really need to file, but insists on doing so. since all zeros, the 1040 is not eligible to e-file....should I just enter $1 other income so I can e-file this return for her?
  25. I had a similar client a few years ago.....He had not filed taxes in 5 or 6 years and IRS had finally caught up to him. I prepared his oldest two years so he would not lose his refund. He paid me for those two years, but when I told him I would need paid in advance for the next three, he never returned. I still have all of his W-2's and 1099's for those years that he left with me.....I assume that when the IRS eventually catches up to him (he is an address-hopper), he will show up to have more years prepared (or at least to ask for his paperwork). Funny thing is he had refunds for the two years I prepared....and an initial review indicated that the other years would likely be refunds as well. You would think he would want that money....or at least want to file to have the refunds offset whatever child support debt he is running from.....Instead, he has lost one year and in a few days will lose another.
